Leak, Jones and Rogers earn weekly honorsJul 11, 2012 - 2:11 PM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Orlando Predators QB Chris Leak has been awarded the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week, while San Jose SaberCats DB Andre Jones has been named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week and Arizona Rattlers OL Sir Vincent Rodgers has been named J. Lewis Small Ironman of the Week for Week 18 of the 2012 AFL season. In addition to these awards, the AFL is also awarding the Cutters Catch of the Week, AFL Playmaker of the Week and Spalding Highlight of the Week. San Jose SaberCats WR Fred Williams was awarded the Cutters Catch of the Week, while Philadelphia Soul DB Kent Richardson earned the AFL Playmaker of the Week award. Philadelphia Soul WR Jeff Hughley and Chicago Rush WR Reggie Gray were awarded the Spalding Highlight of the Week.
RUSSELL ATHLETIC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Leak (6-0, 215, Florida) completed a career-high 85.7 percent of his passes in Week 18, finishing 30-for-35 with 316 yards and tying another career-high with eight touchdowns. It was Leak's second consecutive game with 30 completions and a triple-digit passer rating.
RIDDELL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Jones (5-11, 195, Akron) tallied 4.5 tackles and two interceptions, one of which was returned for a score, in San Jose's 55-31 victory over the New Orleans VooDoo in Week 18. Jones also had two pass breakups in the game.
J. LEWIS SMALL IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Rogers (6-4, 310, Houston) showed off his athleticism by hauling in a 45-yard touchdown reception in the Rattlers' 49-62 loss to the Utah Blaze in Week 18. The offensive lineman has tallied three catches for 86 yards this season. He will be awarded a timepiece crafted by J. Lewis Small for his efforts.
CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK
Williams (6-0, 195, St. Cloud State) displayed great concentration as he made a catch over the boards in the corner of the end zone for the final score in San Jose's Week 18 victory over New Orleans. The catch was one of six Williams came away with in Week 18, three of which were scores. Williams also collected 75 yards as a kick returner in the game.
AFL PLAYMAKER OF THE WEEK
Richardson (6-0, 200, West Virginia) set the single-season franchise record for interceptions after recording his 13th and 14th of the year in Week 18. Richardson finished the team's 62-48 win over the Spokane Shock with two interceptions, 4.5 tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery.
SPALDING HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Gray (5-10, 175, Western Illinois) and Hughley (5-8, 175, Averett) both began their Week 18 games by returning the opening kickoffs for touchdowns. Gray returned his kick 56 yards for a score, while Hughley brought the opening kick back 55 yards for his fifth kickoff return touchdown of the season.
Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Chicago's Jared Perry, Iowa's J.J. Raterink, Jacksonville's Bernard Morris, Philadelphia's Derrick Ross, San Jose's Fred Williams, Tampa Bay's Joe Hills and Utah's Tysson Poots.
Riddell Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Iowa's Jason Simpson, Jacksonville's LaRoche Jackson, Orlando's Erick Harris, Philadelphia's LaRico Stevenson, Pittsburgh's Christian Wise, San Antonio's Victor DeGrate and Utah's Will Mulder.
J. Lewis Small Ironman of the Week candidates included: Jacksonville's Terrance Smith, Kansas City's Jackie Chambers, Milwaukee's Marcus Everett, Philadelphia's Jeff Hughley and Pittsburgh's PJ Berry.
The Arena Football League is also awarding the National Guard MVP of the Week, where fans are given the opportunity to select the winner. Candidates include Orlando Predators WR Jarvis Williams, Philadelphia FB Derrick Ross and Tampa Bay WR Joe Hills. Fans will have 24 hours to vote beginning at 1 p.m. ET on Wednesday, July 11. The winner will be announced on Thursday, July 12.
