Players of the Week: Morris, Castille and Brown
Jul 25, 2012 - 12:55 PM Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Jacksonville Sharks QB Bernard Morris has been awarded the Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week, while Orlando Predators DB Simeon Castille has been named the Riddell Defensive Player of the Week and Philadelphia Soul FB/LB Melik Brown has been named J. Lewis Small Ironman of the Week for Week 20 of the 2012 AFL season. In addition to these awards, the AFL is also awarding the AFL Playmaker of the Week, Cutters Catch of the Week and Spalding Highlight of the Week. Tampa Bay Storm WR Joe Wills was awarded the AFL Playmaker of the Week, while Cleveland Gladiators WR Dominick Goodman earned the Cutters Catch of the Week and Spalding Highlight of the Week honors.RUSSELL ATHLETIC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Morris (6-4, 215, Marshall) passed for eight scores and rushed for another in his return to Pittsburgh in Week 20. The Sharks' signal-caller went 20-for-25 for 194 yards in Jacksonville's 64-39 victory over the Power. With the win, Jacksonville clinched the South Division title for the third consecutive year.
RIDDELL DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Castile (6-1, 190, Alabama) collected a game-high 10 tackles and two interceptions in Orlando's 49-39 victory over the Milwaukee Mustangs in Week 20. The NET10 Rookie of the Year candidate finished the season as the Predators' top tackler (108.5) and tied for the team-lead in interceptions (7).
J. LEWIS SMALL IRONMAN OF THE WEEK
Brown (6-2, 280, North Carolina) came up big in the fourth quarter of Philadelphia's 69-34 victory over Utah. On a bobbled kick return off the iron, Brown recovered the ball in the end zone for a touchdown. On the offensive end, he only ran the ball twice, but recorded an exciting pitch to Jeff Hughley for a touchdown. He also collected an assisted tackle on defense. He will be awarded a timepiece crafted by J. Lewis Small for his efforts.
AFL PLAYMAKER OF THE WEEK
Hills (6-4, 210, Tennessee State) tallied eight catches for 215 yards and three touchdowns in Tampa Bay's 53-63 loss to Spokane in Week 20. Hills finished the year with three consecutive performances with 100 or more receiving yards and three or more touchdowns.
CUTTERS CATCH OF THE WEEK and SPALDING HIGHLIGHT OF THE WEEK
Goodman (6-1, 210, Cincinnati) made a one-handed catch off the rebound net as time expired to give the Gladiators a 60-54 victory over the Chicago Rush in Week 20. The Hail Mary catch gave Goodman his single-season franchise record 170th reception and earned Cleveland its eighth win of the season.
Russell Athletic Offensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Kerry Reed, Cleveland's Carlese Franklin, Iowa's J.J. Raterink, Orlando's Jarvis Williams, Philadelphia's Derrick Ross, New Orleans' Kurt Rocco and Spokane's Adron Tennell.
Riddell Defensive Player of the Week candidates included: Arizona's Virgil Gray, Chicago's Semaj Moody, Georgia's Quenton Burrell, Jacksonville's Scooter Berry, San Antonio's Jamar Ransom and Spokane's James Ruffin.
J. Lewis Small Ironman of the Week candidates included: Chicago's Kelvin Morris, Jacksonville's Terrance Smith, New Orleans' Josh Bush and Orlando's T.T. Toliver.
