Blue Bombers rally past Alouettes

Aug 23, 2014 - 5:41 AM Winnipeg, MB (SportsNetwork.com) - Nic Grigsby rushed for a 26-yard touchdown with just over two minutes remaining to give the Winnipeg Blue Bombers a 24-16 victory over the Montreal Alouettes.

With the hosts trailing by two, Drew Willy converted a pass to Cory Watson for 21 yards to the Montreal 53. After Grigsby hauled in a five-yard pass from Willy, Billy Parker was called for pass interference.

Grigsby followed with a 12-yard run that set up his game-winning touchdown scamper.

Maurice Leggett picked off a pass to set up a Lirim Hajrullahu field goal, then Leggett finished off his three-interception night with another pick in the closing minute to seal the win.

Winnipeg snapped its two-game losing streak, while Montreal has dropped six in a row.

Grigsby finished with 73 yards on 10 carries, while receiver Clarence Denmark caught three passes for 77 yards in the win.

Jonathan Crompton converted 18-of-29 passes for 266 yards and a trio of interceptions to Leggett.

A Winnipeg single opened the scoring and that would be all in the first quarter, with the hosts taking a 1-0 lead into the second.

Sean Whyte kicked a 37-yard field goal midway through the second to put Montreal on the board, then he added a 14-yard boot as time expired in the half to put the visitors up 6-1 at the break.

Derek Jones blocked an Alouettes punt early in the third. Don Unamba recovered the loose ball on the Montreal 1-yard line and plunged in for the score to give the Bombers an 8-6 advantage.

Crompton connected with Tyrell Sutton for a 71-yard pass with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter and Tanner Marsh capped the drive five plays later with a one-yard score.

Hajrullahu knocked down a 22-yard field goal early in the fourth to trim the deficit to 13-11. Minutes later following a 37-yard hookup from Willy to Denmark, Hajrullahu added a 24-yard field goal that gave Winnipeg a one-point lead.

Montreal and Whyte answered with a 21-yard field goal that pushed the Als in front.
