Cornish headlines CFL's monthly awards

Oct 1, 2014 - 5:41 PM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Calgary Stampeders running back Jon Cornish has been named the CFL's Offensive Player of the Month as well as the league's top Canadian player for games played in September.

Cornish helped the Stampeders to a 3-0 month by rushing for a CFL-best 439 yards on 48 attempts, including a season-best 174-yard, two-touchdown effort on just 11 carries in Calgary's 40-33 comeback win over Toronto in Week 12.

The former Kansas back was chosen as the CFL's Canadian Player of the Week a total of three times in September.

Montreal Alouettes linebacker Bear Woods earned Defensive Player of the Month honors after accumulating 33 tackles, three sacks and a forced fumble in four games. The third-year pro stood out in Montreal's 38-31 victory over Hamilton in Week 11, recording a career-high 10 tackles and a pair of sacks.

Saskatchewan's Weston Dressler took home the Special Teams Player of the Month award after returning a pair of punts for touchdowns, a 75-yarder in a win at Winnipeg in the Labour Day Classic and a career-high 78-yard runback against Ottawa two weeks later. The North Dakota product averaged 14.7 yards on 17 punt returns in September.
