Nilmar double sees Villarreal beat Valladolid 3-1

MADRID(AP) -- Nilmar scored twice as Villarreal beat Valladolid
3-1 in the Spanish league on Sunday.

The Brazil striker headed both goals, in the seventh minute from
Damian Escudero's cross and in the 47th, when he latched on to a
long pass out of defense and lobbed onrushing goalkeeper Justo
Villar.

Italy striker Giuseppe Rossi made it 3-0 in the 58th before
Valladolid's Diego Costa cut the deficit three minutes later,
taking advantage of a defensive error to shoot home from a tight
angle.

The win gives Villarreal 12 points and lifts the team further
away from the relegation zone where it was mired for most of the
first part of the season.

Also on Sunday, late goals by Victor Castano and Gonzalo Castro
gave Mallorca a 3-1 win against Almeria, Getafe beat Espanyol
2-0 and Xerez drew 0-0 with Sporting Gijon.

On Saturday Real Madrid went top of the league by beating Racing
Santander 1-0 while Barcelona drew 1-1 with Athletic Bilbao.

Defoe hits five as Tottenham win 9-1

By JAMES PIERCY
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Harry Redknapp hailed Jermain Defoe after the
England striker became the first player in more than a decade to
score five goals in a Premier League as Tottenham thrashed
woeful Wigan 9-1 at White Hart Lane on Sunday.

Defoe is only the third player to notch the record-equalling
haul after Andy Cole and Alan Shearer and his sensational
display included a seven-minute hat-trick at the start of the
second half.

Peter Crouch, Aaron Lennon and Niko Kranjcar were also on the
scoresheet before Chris Kirkland's own goal completed Wigan's
humiliation.

Redknapp said: "For Jermain to go and get five goals was an
outstanding performance. They were all great finishes.

"He looked sharp in training during the week and I felt if he
could carry that into the game he would be a real handful.

"All of our strikers are on form. Robbie Keane got four goals
earlier in the season, Crouchy got a hat-trick and now Jermain
has topped them both.

"It is not often you score nine goals in the Premier League but
the whole team was outstanding today."

Crouch took just nine minutes to open the scoring and set the
tone for a miserable afternoon for Roberto Martinez's side.

Fit-again Aaron Lennon teased Wigan defender Erik Edman down the
right before crossing for Crouch to head home from close range.

Redknapp's side dominated the first half and Defoe thought he
had doubled their lead 12 minutes before half time, latching
onto Kranjcar's pass before firing against the crossbar from a
narrow angle.

Charles N'Zogbia almost equalised against the run of play in the
40th minute when his left foot pile-driver shaved Heurelho
Gomes's post.

Wigan were fortunate to go in only one-nil down at the interval
but Spurs ran riot after the break.

Defoe struck twice in four minutes with a pair of clinical
finishes before Paul Scharner reduced the arrears, with the help
of a handball that went unnoticed by the officials.

Wigan's hopes of staging an unlikely comeback were dashed as
Defoe completed his quick-fire treble by rounding off the
excellent Lennon's low cross.

Defoe was in unstoppable form and two more expertly-taken
strikes from through balls by Vedran Corluka and Kranjcar put
the game out of Wigan's reach.

Latics goalkeeper Kirkland's misery was compounded two minutes
from time when David Bentley's free kick hit the woodwork and
rebounded into the net off the former England international.

There was still time for Croatian Kranjcar to get in on the act,
smashing the ball into the top corner from midway inside the
penalty area in the dying seconds.

Embarrassed Wigan boss Martinez said: "It was an extremely bad
performance. The way we started in the first ten minutes and the
way we started the second half was not up to standard at all.

"We showed moments of naivety and Tottenham took full advantage.

The scoreline is very disappointing and there are certain things
we were not good enough and we really got punished. With the
goals we conceded we only have ourselves to blame."

Red Wings-Predators Preview

By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN
STATS Senior Writer

Detroit (11-6-4) at Nashville (12-8-1), 7:00 p.m. EDT

The Nashville Predators look to win their sixth straight game
Monday night and complete a perfect five-game homestand as they
meet the Detroit Red Wings for the first time in 2009-10.

Nashville (12-8-1) is one of the hottest teams in the NHL,
winning nine of 11 games. The last two wins for the Predators
have come in shootouts, including a 4-3 victory over Columbus on
Saturday.

Goaltender Pekka Rinne stopped all three Blue Jackets' shooters
to improve to 8-1-0 with a 2.18 goals-against average in his
last nine starts. He stopped two of three shooters for New
Jersey in Thursday's 3-2 victory.

"I have always kind of liked shootouts," Rinne said. "For a
goalie, you want to be a difference maker."

The Predators have scored at least one power-play goal in four
straight games, with Jason Arnott and Martin Erat each getting
one Saturday. David Legwand added a short-handed goal.

"The power play was good tonight," coach Barry Trotz said.
"Special teams were a big part of the game. We got two
power-play goals and a short-handed goal."

Rinne went 3-1 with a 2.46 GAA against Detroit (11-6-4) last
season as the Predators won four of six. The Red Wings' Chris
Osgood has lost four straight starts to Nashville, posting a
3.76 GAA.

This is Detroit's first game in Nashville since an 8-0 loss Feb.
28 in which the Predators scored a franchise-record five
first-period goals. Rinne made 30 saves and Arnott had a hat
trick after not scoring in his previous nine games against the
Red Wings.

Osgood returned for Friday's 2-1 overtime loss to Florida after
missing three games with the flu. Jimmy Howard was in net
Saturday to earn a 3-2 shootout win at Montreal.

Brad Stuart and Pavel Datsyuk each had power-play goals in the
first period Saturday as the Red Wings blew a two-goal lead
before avoiding a third straight loss.

"I think we played well," center Henrik Zetterberg said. "And we
came in here, we got a lot of power play from the beginning - up
two goals. I think it was a well-played game, both teams coming
from back-to-back games so it was good goaltending."

The Red Wings will be without defenseman Niklas Kronwall after
he suffered the brunt of a leg-on-leg, open-ice collision with
Montreal enforcer Georges Laraque on Saturday.

Kronwall didn't return after he fell to the ice in obvious pain
and is expected to be out for some time. The Red Wings felt the
play was dirty.

"You know it's something that shouldn't happen in hockey," coach
Mike Babcock said. "A guy shouldn't hang his leg out there and
hurt another guy. It's unacceptable and it's disappointing,
obviously. We just lost a good player for a period of time. Our
doctors will look at him, but he's out for a chunk for sure."

Defoe scores 5 in Tottenham's 9-1 win over Wigan

LONDON(AP) -- Jermain Defoe scored five goals, including a
seven-minute hat trick, to match a Premier League record in
powering Tottenham to a 9-1 rout of Wigan on Sunday.

Defoe equaled the mark set by Newcastle's Alan Shearer in 1999
and Manchester United's Andy Cole in 1995.

Tottenham matched Man United's league record for most goals in a
game. United defeated Ipswich 9-0 in 1995, the game in which
Cole had his five goals.

After Peter Crouch opened the scoring in the ninth minute for
the Spurs at home, Defoe took struck with three goals between
the 51st and 58th minutes. Aaron Lennon made it 5-0 and Defoe
netted again in the 69th and 87th. Wigan goalkeeper Chris
Kirkland scored an own-goal and Niko Kranjcar added another in
the final minute.

Paul Scharner replied for Wigan when Spurs were three goals up,
and the Austrian appeared to control the ball with his hands
before scoring.

Tottenham is tied with Arsenal for third place behind Chelsea
and Manchester United. Chelsea outplayed Wolves 4-0 to stay five
points ahead in first place. Man United beat Everton 3-0 to take
second place from Arsenal, which lost 1-0 at Sunderland.
Blackburn ended a run of five straight away defeats with a 2-0
victory at Bolton.

PARIS(AP) -- Striker Marama Vahirua and defender Franco Sebastian
Sosa scored in the first half to give Lorient a 2-0 win at
struggling Saint-Etienne on Sunday that moved it up to fourth in
the French standings.

Saint-Etienne lost its eighth game this season and stayed in
17th place just above the relegation zone. Lorient has 24 points
from 13 matches, two behind league leader Auxerre.

The home side got off to a terrible start, conceding twice in
the first 17 minutes. Vahirua scored his sixth goal of the
season after only four minutes, curling a free kick in the top
corner that left goalkeeper Jeremy Janot stranded.

Sosa added the second when he outjumped the Saint-Etienne
defence to beat Janot with a header at the far post.

Also Sunday, France striker Loic Remy scored from the spot in
the 50th minute to give Nice a 1-0 win over Toulouse and its
fourth consecutive victory. Nice was awarded the penalty after
left-back Cheikh M'Bengue handled the ball in the box.

Promoted Montpellier will be looking for its first win in four
matches when it plays Lille at home later Sunday.

On Saturday, Auxerre took advantage of defending champion
Bordeaux's 1-0 home loss against Valenciennes to take top spot
with a 2-0 win over Monaco.

Auxerre, which leads the standings for the first time in seven
years, has 26 points, one clear of both Bordeaux and Lyon, which
was held to a 1-1 draw at last-place Grenoble.

D'Antoni: Nate not benched for shot at wrong hoop

By BRIAN MAHONEY
AP Basketball Writer

NEW YORK(AP) -- Knicks coach Mike D'Antoni says Nate Robinson was
not benched for taking a shot at the wrong basket Saturday.

The Knicks inbounded to Robinson in the backcourt with 0.5
seconds left in the first quarter of their 98-91 victory at New
Jersey. Rather than just hold the ball, or heave one at the
basket the Knicks were attacking, Robinson turned and shot at
his own basket. The shot went in, but it was released after the
buzzer and didn't count.

D'Antoni yelled at Robinson on the court between quarters.

"When you're 2-9, which we were at the time, I think any
distractions are bad," D'Antoni said Sunday before the Knicks
played Boston. "If our whole focus is not on trying to win and
turn this thing around, then it's not right and it's not
something we want to do, and it's just one incident and we'll go
on and we'll see what happens today."

Robinson played only six minutes all game, leading to
speculation he was benched. But D'Antoni said he just felt other
players, such as starting guard Larry Hughes, were playing
better.

The shot was shown on highlight clips on TV and the Internet on
Saturday night. Celtics coach Doc Rivers was asked if he'd seen
it.

"Yeah," Rivers said. "Interesting. That's not my problem."

Robinson's occasional bouts of immaturity have annoyed the
Knicks. When he was pulled over this summer in a traffic stop,
he joked and complained about it on his Twitter feed while
waiting in his car. But D'Antoni said they were "cool" after
Saturday's play.

"That's something that Nate will work on and we talked about it
and keep talking about it, but that doesn't affect his playing
time," D'Antoni said.

Kings-Grizzlies Preview

By MATT BECKER
STATS Senior Writer

Sacramento (5-7) at Memphis (4-9), 8:00 p.m. EDT

Sacramento Kings coach Paul Westphal is proud of the way his
team his playing. Their effort just hasn't led to many wins
lately.

Westphal's Kings look to avoid a season-high fourth straight
loss Monday night when they visit the Memphis Grizzlies.

Wins were expected to be hard to come by for Sacramento (5-7)
after Kevin Martin fractured his left wrist in the first week of
November, but the team has remained competitive.

The Kings won their first four games following Martin's injury
but have lost three in a row since. The last two defeats have
been especially hard to swallow.

After falling to Southwest Division-leading Dallas 104-102 on
Friday, Sacramento lost to Houston 113-106 on Saturday. The
Kings had a chance against the Rockets, pulling within three on
a 3-pointer by Beno Udrih with 1:19 remaining, but could not get
any closer.

Sacramento had six players in double figures, led by Spencer
Hawes' season-high 24 points and Udrih's 18.

"I like the spirit and the effort on this team," Westphal said.
"Everyone should be pleased with the way we're playing. I like
the way we compete every night. I'm sorry we couldn't cash in on
the effort. This team has heart but we haven't learned how to
win."

Making things even tougher for Sacramento, rookie Tyreke Evans
sat out Saturday after spraining a finger on his right hand
diving for a ball against the Mavericks.

Evans had been carrying the Kings' offense lately, averaging
24.0 points in the six games since Martin's injury, and his
status for this game is uncertain. He had a season-low three
points in a 127-116 overtime victory over Memphis on Nov. 2
while Martin finished with 48 on 7 of 10 shooting from 3-point
range.

Like Sacramento, the Grizzlies (4-9) are also coming off a tough
loss.

Memphis led Milwaukee by 12 points in the first half Friday and
was tied at 90 with 3:21 to play but ended up losing 103-98,
snapping a three-game winning streak.

"We should have won this game," said Zach Randolph, who scored
18 points. "We have to get ready for Monday against Sacramento.
We need to prepare and come out and play."

Despite Friday's defeat, the Grizzlies again received strong
performances from Rudy Gay and Marc Gasol.

Gay finished with 24 points and 10 rebounds and is averaging
26.0 points and 8.0 boards in his last three games, while Gasol
had 14 points on 6 of 8 shooting and is averaging 16.5 points on
84.4 percent shooting over the last four.

Both players also had solid performances against the Kings
earlier this month.

Gay finished with 21 points and a career high-tying 13 rebounds,
and Gasol added 16 and 16, respectively. Randolph led the way
for Memphis in that game with 30 points and a season-best 16
rebounds.

The loss to Sacramento earlier this month was part of a
seven-game skid for the Grizzlies.

inactive for the Saints with knee injuries. Cornerbacks Tracy
Porter and Chris McAlister also are sitting out as New Orleans
tries to remain unbeaten.

Bush did not practice during the week because of swelling in his
left knee. Ellis sprained his right knee against Miami last
month.

The rest of New Orleans' inactives are placekicker Garrett
Hartley, receiver Lance Moore, cornerback Jabari Greer and
linebacker Jonathan Casillas.

Tampa Bay's inactives were third quarterback Byron Leftwich,
receivers Yamon Figurs and Brian Clark, cornerbacks Mike Mickens
and Elbert Mack, guard Shawn Murphy, tackle James Lee and
defensive tackle Dre Moore.

Redskins without Haynesworth, Portis

ARLINGTON, Texas(AP) -- Washington Redskins defensive tackle
Albert Haynesworth was out of the lineup Sunday, eliminating a
likely in-game meeting with Andre Gurode three years after
cleating the Cowboys center in the face.

Haynesworth was inactive for Sunday's game because of a sprained
left ankle sustained last week that kept him out of practice,
and was replaced in the starting lineup by Kedric Golston.
Haynesworth was on the field before the game in a Redskins
T-shirt, but didn't take part in any kind of pregame warmups.

It would have been the first time for Haynesworth and Gurode to
go against each other in a regular-season game since a dirty
play in October 2006. Gurode needed 30 stitches and was bothered
by headaches and blurred vision after the 6-foot-6, 350-pound
Haynesworth, then with Tennessee, kicked him and stomped on his
helmetless face. But Gurode didn't miss a game and Haynesworth
was suspended for five games - three games longer than anyone
ever had been punished for on-field behavior in NFL history.

Gurode and Haynesworth, who could play against each other Dec.
27 when the Cowboys play at Washington, insisted during the week
the incident was in the past. They both were at the last two Pro
Bowls.

Haynesworth missed his first game for Washington since signing a
$100 million, seven-year free-agent deal last spring.

The Redskins were also without running back Clinton Portis for
the second straight week because of a concussion.

Offensive tackle Marc Colombo (broken left leg) and safety Ken
Hamlin (high right ankle sprain) were inactive for Dallas. They
were replaced in the lineup by first-time starters Doug Free at
tackle and Alan Ball in the secondary.

Murray beats Del Potro in 1st match at ATP finals

By MATTIAS KAREN
AP Sports Writer

LONDON(AP) -- Andy Murray beat Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3, 3-6, 6-2
Sunday in the opening group match of the season-ending ATP World
Tour Finals.

Del Potro was troubled by unforced errors and a bloody nose that
required medical treatment after the third game of the first
set. The reason for the nosebleed was not immediately clear.

The win improves Murray's chances of advancing from the
round-robin phase to the semifinals of the lucrative
eight-player tournament. Two group matches remain for both
players.

Roger Federer played Fernando Verdasco in the late match in
Group A at O2 Arena. On Monday, Rafael Nadal takes on Robin
Soderling of Sweden and Novak Djokovic of Serbia faces Nikolay
Davydenko of Russia in Group B.

Del Potro double-faulted to set up two match points for Murray,
and the Scot converted the second with a backhand winner.

Murray took a 5-0 lead in the first set, but Del Potro
eventually found his forehand rhythm and saved six set points
spread over four games before Murray finally served out for a
one-set lead.

Del Potro then dictated play with his forehand in the second
set, taking a 3-0 lead as Murray began having problems with his
backhand. The Scot broke back for 3-2 but immediately lost his
serve again, causing him to send a ball high into the rafters in
frustration. Del Potro clinched the set with a scorching
crosscourt forehand.

But Murray dominated the deciding set, breaking Del Potro in the
second game en route to a 4-1 lead.

Murray finished with 30 winners and 26 unforced errors. Del
Potro mixed 38 errors with his 31 winners.

Blackburn win 2-0 at Bolton

By WALTER SIMON
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Blackburn gave stricken manager Sam Allardyce the
perfect get well present by ending their eight-month wait for an
away win with a 2-0 victory over Lancashire rivals Bolton on
Sunday.

Allardyce missed the match in preparation for undergoing heart
surgery as David Dunn set the visitors on course for their first
victory on the road since March with a superb 32nd minute
strike.

Bolton defender Sam Ricketts's comical own goal 17 minutes from
time sealed a surprisingly comfortable win.

Man-of-the-match Dunn said: "It was a major shock when we heard
about the manager. He is a big man so he must need a big ticker
to keep him going.

"We all wish him the best in his operation and that win is for
him.

"It has been a tough few weeks for us but we have ten games
ahead now where we believe we can pick up points and start
climbing the table."

Blackburn, led by Allardyce's assistant Neil McDonald, were
bidding to avoid an 11th successive away Premier League defeat
and Bolton should have taken the lead with only 13 minutes gone.

Gavin McCann picked out Matt Taylor with a high ball over the
top of Blackburn's defence but the former England under-21
midfielder could not make clean contact inside the six-yard box.

Joey O'Brien came to the home side's rescue in the 23rd minute,
getting back to hook Dunn's header off the line after he had
outmuscled Gary Cahill.

The key moment of the first half came 13 minutes before the
interval as Bolton came within inches of taking the lead only to
concede seconds later.

Blackburn had a lucky escape when Taylor's 25-yard free kick was
deflected onto the crossbar by captain Ryan Nelsen.

The visitors launched a swift counter attack, which culminated
in Jason Roberts rolling the ball into Dunn's path and
Blackburn's leading scorer expertly side-footing into Jussi
Jaaskelainen's top left corner from 12 yards.

Rovers goalkeeper Paul Robinson tried a cheeky attempt to make
it 2-0 from inside his own half after spotting opposite number
Jaaskelainen off his line but the Finn managed to scramble the
ball away.

Robinson did well to turn Taylor's inswinging free kick over the
crossbar on the stroke of half time.

Taylor passed up another glorious chance from the resulting
corner, putting a free header high over the bar from McCann's
centre.

Blackburn were denied by a second goalline clearance three
minutes after time when McCann bravely headed El Hadji Diouf's
powerful volley over behind for a corner.

McCann stopped Bolton falling further behind moments later,
blocking Roberts' flicked header on the line after Nelsen had
nodded on Dunn's corner.

Blackburn were gifted their points-clinching second when a
breakdown in communication between Ricketts and Jaaskelainen
ended with the Welsh full back heading an attempting back pass
over his goalkeeper and into his own net.

Bolton manager Gary Megson, whose side were booed off at the
final whistle, said: "We had as many chances as them in the
first half and paid the price for not taking them."
