NEW ORLEANS(AP) -- Billy Humphrey scored with 23 points to lead
New Orleans to a 67-55 win over Texas State on Saturday.

Humphrey shot 6-for-13 from the field and 9-for-10 from the free
throw line for the Privateers (2-1). Carl Blair contributed with
10 rebounds and eight assists.

New Orleans used a 13-1 run in the first half to turn a
four-point deficit into an 8-point lead, as a 3-pointer from
Devin McDonald capped the run and made the score 21-13 with 7:59
remaining. The Privateers led 31-25 at halftime.

The Bobcats (1-3) were led by Tony Bishop, who finished with 16
points and six rebounds. Cameron Johnson added 12 points and
seven rebounds in the losing effort.

New Orleans shot 42.1 percent from the field (24-for-57),
including 53.3 percent from 3-point range (8-for-15).

Texas State shot only 29 percent in the game (18-for-62).

Tulsa (4-0) took command late in the first half, breaking a
23-23 tie with a 12-0 run. The Hurricane made 15 of 16 free
throws in the final 5:26 of the first half as the smaller
Jaguars (3-2) committed 16 first-half fouls.

Tulsa led 42-29 at the break. Twenty of its first-half points

Hurtt hit a trio of 3-pointers and was fouled on a third. He
made 2 of 3 free throws to help TU maintain a double-digit lead
throughout the second half.

Saturday's Mens College Basketball Capsules

LEXINGTON, Ky.(AP) -- Freshman John Wall had 21 points and 11
assists as No. 4 Kentucky dominated Rider 92-63 on Saturday in
the Cancun Challenge.

Patrick Patterson added 19 points and a career-high 18 rebounds
for the Wildcats (4-0). The team hardly looked like the one
coach John Calipari called the "worst" defensive team he's seen
in 20 years after wins over Miami (Ohio) and Sam Houston State
earlier in the week.

Kentucky held Rider (2-2) to 31 percent shooting, blocked 10
shots and forced the Broncs into 20 turnovers.

Ryan Thompson led Rider with 16 points, but the Broncs couldn't
find the shooting stroke that helped them win at Mississippi
State last week. Rider made just 4-of-17 3-pointers and was
never really in it after Wall took over midway through the first
half.

No. 9 Duke 104, Radford 67=

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) - Freshman Andre Dawkins scored a season-high
20 points and Duke matched a school record with 18 3-pointers in
a romp against Radford.

Nolan Smith added 20 points and Jon Scheyer had 18 for the Blue
Devils (4-0). They overwhelmed Radford during a first half in
which they shot 50 percent, matched the school record with 13 3s
in a half and put this one away with a huge run.

After that, the only question was whether they'd launch enough
3s to reach the school record set in 2000 and matched against
Monmouth in the first round of the 2001 NCAA tournament. They
finished 18 for 32 from long range and shot 48.6 percent
overall.

Artsiom Parakhouski had 23 points and 14 rebounds in his third
straight 20-point game for the Highlanders (2-1).

No. 19 Georgetown 63, Savannah State 44=

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - Jason Clark scored a career-high 14 points
and four Hoyas were in double figures as Georgetown rolled to a
victory against overmatched Savannah State.

Greg Monroe added 13 points for Georgetown (3-0), Austin Freeman
had 12 and Chris Wright 11 in a game that gave the Hoyas a
much-needed breather after they squeaked past Temple 46-45 on
Tuesday.

Darius Baugh scored 10 points to lead Savannah State (2-2),
which hit only 13 of 48 field goal attempts.

No. 20 Louisville 69, East Tennessee State 56=

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) - Edgar Sosa scored 13 of his 16 points in
the first half and Louisville beat East Tennessee State.

The Cardinals won despite shooting just 36.4 percent, including
just 6 of 30 from beyond the three-point line. Louisville used
an 18-0 run in the first half to turn a three-point deficit into
a 25-10 lead.

Sosa was one of the few Louisville players to shoot well in the
first half. He only missed one of his five shots, including
hitting four 3-pointers. The rest of the Cardinals were just
8-for-26 before the break.

Samardo Samuels added 14 points and 11 rebounds for Louisville
(2-0).

Wall, Patterson lead No. 4 Kentucky by Rider 92-63

By WILL GRAVES
AP Sports Writer

LEXINGTON, Ky.(AP) -- Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousins saw Rider's
Brandon Penn pull up from well behind the 3-point line and
stretched every last inch of his 6-foot-11 frame in an effort to
get a hand on the ball.

Guarding an opponent 22 feet from the basket isn't something
Cousins does often. And he plowed into Penn as the ball clanged
off the rim, but Cousins' effort perhaps the surest sign that
Kentucky coach John Calipari's message to his team that it
needed to get serious about defense had come through loud and
clear.

Playing with the kind of intensity sorely lacking in its first
three games, No. 4 Kentucky roared past the Broncs 92-63 on
Saturday, hardly looking like the club Calipari called the
"worst" defensive team he's seen in 20 years following narrow
escapes against Miami (Ohio) and Sam Houston State.

The Wildcats (4-0) held Rider to 31 percent shooting - including
just 4-of-17 3-pointers - and added 10 steals and 10 blocks in
easily their most complete game of the season.

"There has to be a sense of urgency defensively, we had that
today," Calipari said.

The urgency was necessary after Kentucky allowed the Bearkats
and the RedHawks to combine for 33 3-pointers while nearly
upsetting the Wildcats earlier in the week, games that proved to
be eye-openers for both Calipari and his players.

The coach said he was "embarrassed" by his team's apathy and let
them know about it during a film session on Friday. Calipari
spared no one - not even stars John Wall and Patrick Patterson -
from some pointed if good-natured criticism.

"Some of it was almost hysterical," Calipari said. "They were
laughing at each other."

Things were decidedly more serious on the court against the
Broncs (2-2).

With the Wildcats shutting down Rider's long-range shooting,
Wall found plenty of room to go to work on the break. The
freshman finished with 21 points, 11 assists and six rebounds as
Kentucky took control early then kept the pressure on.

"Everybody played big," Wall said. "I smiled more than I usually
do because we were having a great time and we were playing
defense. We have to do this every game."

Calipari was happy to settle for just one game, particularly
against the Broncs who had already knocked off Mississippi State
and came in making 48 percent of its 3-pointers.

"I was fearful of this game until I saw how we defended early in
the game and then I felt fine," Calipari said.

Wall and Patterson - who had 19 points and 18 rebounds - did
their best to put their coach at ease.

Ryan Thompson led Rider with 16 points, but the Broncs simply
didn't have the firepower to keep up.

"They made it hard on us," said Rider coach Tommy Dempsey.

Kentucky outscored Rider in the paint 56-20 and had 24
second-chance points, but it was the perimeter defense that
allowed the Wildcats to get on the break and let Wall go to
work.

During one dazzling stretch in the first half Wall put together
a series of spectacular moves in the open floor that showcased
why he's considered a can't-miss NBA prospect.

On one break he completed a flawless 360-degree spin in the lane
for a layup. Moments later he followed it with a steal, a basket
and the foul.

The prettiest move, however, was a coast-to-coast sprint in
which Wall dribbled the ball between his legs at full speed
while switching from his left hand to his right hand. He made
the layup while absorbing the contact then knocked down the
free-throw to put Kentucky 27-14 with 8:16 to go in the first
half.

"He's as good as I've ever seen in the open floor," Dempsey
said.

And unlike Kentucky's first three games, when the Wildcats
relaxed when things appeared to be in hand, this time there
would be no letdown.

Cousins and fellow freshman center Daniel Orton combined for 32
points and 12 rebounds and Kentucky received plenty of
production off the bench after the starters scored all 102
points in the win over Sam Houston State.

Kentucky led 51-26 at the break and never let Rider get within
20 points the rest of the way. At times putting Patterson,
Cousins and Orton on the floor together, the Wildcats had little
trouble getting whatever they wanted inside.

It's a combination they'll need in Cancun. Kentucky plays
Cleveland State on Tuesday and either Virginia or Stanford on
Wednesday.

"We are just so far from where we need to be," Calipari said.
"But we were focused. They were more concerned about their
teammates than themselves. We're making strides."

Tennessee-DePaul Preview

By JEFF MEZYDLO
STATS Senior Writer

Tennessee (3-0) at DePaul (2-0), 6:00 p.m. EDT

Tennessee's defense has made its offense look dominant through
the first week of the season.

The 10th-ranked Volunteers hope to continue that trend Sunday
when they face DePaul in the semifinals of the Paradise Jam at
the University of Virgin Islands Sports and Fitness Center.

One game after scoring 49 points off 29 turnovers in a 124-49
win over North Carolina-Asheville on Tuesday, Tennessee (3-0)
forced 35 in a 105-66 rout of East Carolina in the opening round
of the Paradise Jam on Friday.

The 35 turnovers forced by the Vols are the most in coach Bruce
Pearl's five years at Tennessee. Opponents are turning the ball
over an average of 27.6 times per contest versus the Vols, who
have employed an aggressive full-court press that's been a
staple of Pearl's teams.

"Obviously when the tempo got up it was in our favor," Pearl
said. "We played with passion and intensity."

Pearl has also benefited from a strong start by 6-foot-7 guard
Scotty Hopson, who's averaging 22.0 points and is 14 of 18 from
3-point range. The sophomore shot 10 of 15 from the field,
including 4 of 5 from beyond the arc, while posting his second
straight 25-point effort Friday.

"I believe every shot is going in, and that confidence helps
me," said Hopson, who averaged 9.2 points while starting 30 of
34 games last season. "I believe when I start hitting the shots
it really helps in getting the team going."

Bobby Maze added 15 points for the Vols, who shot 58.0 percent
after making 59.7 percent of their shots against UNC-Asheville.

While Tennessee is shooting 55.8 percent and averaging 104.0
points through three games, it could be in for its first true
test against DePaul (2-0).

After snapping an 18-game regular-season losing streak with a
59-53 victory over Columbia on Tuesday, the Blue Demons upset
Northern Iowa 60-52 on Friday.

Sophomore Jeremiah Kelly recorded career highs with 18 points
and eight rebounds, while Mac Koshwal added 12 with 19 rebounds
as DePaul outscored the Panthers 20-6 to erase a six-point
deficit in the final nine-plus minutes.

Northern Iowa, an NCAA tournament qualifier last season, is the
preseason favorite to win the Missouri Valley Conference.

Koshwal, who averaged 12.2 points as a sophomore last season,
had 19 and 12 boards versus Columbia, a victory he felt was
almost a must-win for a team that finished 9-24 in 2008-09.

"It was so important to win our first game after what we went
through last year," Koshwal told the school's official Web site.

This will be just the second time Tennessee and DePaul will
meet. The Vols won 96-61 at home on Dec. 14, 1973, in that
initial contest.

The Blue Demons will try to snap a 16-game losing streak against
ranked opponents dating to an 84-76 win over then-No. 17
Villanova on Jan. 3, 2008.

The winner of this contest will face either No. 7 Purdue or
Saint Joseph's in the tournament championship game Monday night.

Valparaiso-Michigan St. Preview

By ALAN FERGUSON
STATS Writer

Valparaiso (1-2) at Michigan State (3-0), 12:00 p.m. EDT

With one more victory, Tom Izzo will move into a tie atop
Michigan State's all-time list.

Izzo, however, is likely more concerned about getting a better
effort from the second-ranked Spartans as they host Valparaiso
in the Legends Classic on Sunday.

The Michigan State coach earned his 339th victory - one shy of
former mentor Jud Heathcote - with Friday night's 75-62 home win
over Toledo, but Izzo wasn't pleased with his team's
performance.

The Spartans (3-0) shot a respectable 45.5 percent but were 4 of
17 from 3-point range. They also barely outrebounded the winless
Rockets 44-40.

"I'm very disappointed in how we played," he said. "It was not a
very good performance and the blame should fall strictly on me.
It's my team, and I wasn't very happy with them."

Izzo's team still had five players score in double figures, led
by Draymond Green's 15 points. Fellow sophomore forward Delvon
Roe added 10 and matched a career high with 11 rebounds.

However, even their performances didn't escape Izzo's criticism
as he felt his post players were selfish.

"It looks to me a little bit fat and sassy," he said. "We've
just got a lot of work to do."

The Spartans will try to improve against a struggling Valparaiso
team that's lost each of its first two road games by double
digits against Division I opponents. The Crusaders (1-2) bounced
back with a 78-56 home victory Friday night over Indiana-South
Bend, an NAIA school.

Brandon McPherson, Valparaiso's lone senior, was 5 of 6 from
3-point range en route to a career-high 25 points. McPherson,
who has consecutive 20-point performances, is second on the team
in scoring (18.7 points per game) behind sophomore guard Brandon
Wood's 22.3 ppg.

Valparaiso, picked to finish eighth in the 10-team Horizon
League, has lost 27 straight to ranked opponents dating back to
a last-second win over Mississippi in the 1998 NCAA tournament.

That includes an 88-77 loss at No. 6 North Carolina on Nov. 15.
The Crusaders hit 12 3-pointers in that game, including six from
Wood during a 30-point performance.

The Spartans, meanwhile, are seeking their 43rd straight home
win over a nonconference opponent, a run that started after a
loss to Duke on Dec. 3, 2003.

Izzo will also try to improve to 38-0 all-time in November home
games, but he might not have Raymar Morgan available again. The
senior forward dressed against Toledo but did not play because
of injuries to both ankles.

Morgan scored 16 points off the bench in Tuesday's 75-71 win
over visiting Gonzaga despite hurting his right ankle in the
first half.

"We're not that good without him," Izzo said. "We need to get
him back."

The previous meeting between the schools came during Michigan
State's run to the 2000 national title. The Spartans opened the
NCAA tournament with 65-38 victory over the Crusaders.

After facing Valparaiso, Michigan State will head to Atlantic
City, N.J., for the Legends Classic championship round, which
begins Nov. 27 against Florida. The Spartans would face Rutgers
or Massachusetts the next evening.

Wednesday. Jarrett Mann had 11 points, Emmanuel Igbinosa and
Jack Trotter each had 10.

Yannick Crowder scored 14 points to lead the Rattlers (0-4), who
have yet to play at home.

Dale Hughes hit a 3-pointer to give the Rattlers a four-point
edge midway through the first half.

Shiller sparked a 16-0 run with a steal and layup and ensuing
3-pointer that put Stanford up for good.

No. 9 Duke hits 18 3s in 104-67 rout of Radford

By JOEDY McCREARY
AP Sports Writer

DURHAM, N.C.(AP) -- Duke doesn't have many guards. The
ninth-ranked Blue Devils sure haven't lost their long-range
touch.

They matched a school record with 18 3-pointers in a 104-67 romp
against Radford on Saturday behind a season-high 20 points from
freshman Andre Dawkins.

"We're just trying to take the shots the defense gives us,"
Dawkins said, "and today, those were 3s."

Nolan Smith added 20 points and Jon Scheyer had 18 for the Blue
Devils (4-0), who overwhelmed Radford during a first half in
which they shot 50 percent, matched the school record with 13 3s
in a half and put this one away with a huge run.

After that, the only question was whether they'd make enough 3s
to reach the school record set in 2000 and matched against
Monmouth in the first round of the 2001 NCAA tournament. They
finished 18 for 32 from behind the arc, shot 48.6 percent
overall and had assists on 25 of 35 baskets.

"We were connecting passes which led to shots. ... There was a
really good rhythm," coach Mike Krzyzewski said. "Andre coming
off (the bench) and shooting the way he did, he got them all in
rhythm. ... That says a lot for our veteran guys. They got him
the ball."

Artsiom Parakhouski had 23 points and 14 rebounds in his third
straight 20-point game for the Highlanders (2-1).

The schedule will get tougher in a hurry for Duke, which heads
to Madison Square Garden to face Arizona State - and Herb
Sendek, who spent a decade coaching at rival North Carolina
State - in the semifinals of the NIT Season Tip-Off.

In having its nine-game road winning streak snapped in emphatic
fashion, Radford was held to one field goal during a 6
1/2-minute stretch of the first half. At the other end of the
floor, it couldn't stop Duke from shooting over its zone
defense.

"With any team, when that ball starts going in, that basket gets
bigger and bigger for them," Radford coach Brad Greenberg said.
"I think they saw a huge basket."

The Blue Devils, who won their first three games by an average
of nearly 34 points, cruised to their NCAA-record 72nd straight
nonconference win at Cameron Indoor Stadium and earned their
32nd straight home win against an unranked team.

But this game probably wasn't supposed to be quite this easy.
Radford returned four starters from last season's NCAA
tournament team - including the 6-foot-11 Parakhouski, the Big
South's preseason player of the year, and 6-8 Joey Lynch-Flohr.

"We wanted to try and protect those two big guys by playing
zone, but obviously, it wasn't very effective," Greenberg said.

Both players scored at least 20 points in both of the
Highlanders' previous games, and they were expected to test
Duke's bulked-up interior that Coach K had called his biggest
team in three decades at the school. His lineup returns only two
guards - Scheyer and Smith - who played significant minutes last
season.

Instead, with the Highlanders throwing a zone defense at the
Blue Devils, they simply went back to their long-range ways.

"Once I hit that first shot, I was just kind of ready to go from
there," said Dawkins, who finished 6 for 8 from beyond the arc.

Duke hit seven 3s during its game-breaking run midway through
the first half, with Smith and Scheyer hitting three apiece.
Scheyer capped the burst and pushed the lead into the 20s with a
3 from the left wing that made it 43-22 with about 6 1/2 minutes
left.

By the time Dawkins made his fourth 3 of the half, stretching
the lead to 24 with 1:20 before the break, the Cameron Crazies
bowed toward him and chanted his name. He responded by raising
his arms in appreciation.

"We watched guys that have that experience on TV, and you just
wish you could be that one day," Dawkins said. "I just got
caught up in the moment."

Kyle Singler scored 13 points and Miles Plumlee added 12 points
and 11 rebounds for Duke, which made 16 of 17 free throws.

Phillip Martin scored 12 points and freshman Blake Smith added
11, but Lynch-Flohr had just eight on 3-of-13 shooting for
Radford, which fell to 0-17 against ACC teams.

Anthony Nelson added 11 points for the Purple Eagles (3-1), who
were never threatened after going on a 14-4 run to end the first
half.

Pierce shot 7-for-18 from the field for the Bulls (2-1). Calvin

out 12 assists.

Towson (1-1) trailed by seven points with less than 3 minutes

Savannah St no match for No. 19 Georgetown, 63-44

SAVANNAH, Ga.(AP) -- Sophomore guard Jason Clark scored a
career-high 14 points in Georgetown's easy win over Savannah
State on Saturday. Hoyas coach John Thompson III called it
"irrelevant."

That's because Thompson figures this is really just the
beginning for Clark. If he's right, this could be a very
successful season for the No. 19 Hoyas, who rolled to a 63-44
win.

"The number of points Jason scores is irrelevant," Thompson
said. "He plays great defense and he's a very unselfish player.
He's at the core of what we're doing this year. He's going to
have a lot more than 14 as we go along."

Greg Monroe added 13 points for Georgetown (3-0). Austin Freeman
had 12 and Chris Wright added 11 in a game that gave the Hoyas a
much-needed breather after they squeaked past Temple 46-45 on
Tuesday.

Darius Baugh scored 10 points to lead Savannah State (2-2),
which hit only 13 of 48 field goal attempts.

The highlight for Savannah State came when the Tigers shocked
the crowd and the Hoyas by jumping out to a 7-0 lead. That
prompted Georgetown to call a timeout, and it was all Hoyas the
rest of the way.

The first of Clark's four 3-pointers started a burst that
quickly tied the game. A few minutes later, Wright scored seven
consecutive points to help open a 10-point lead and the Hoyas
led 34-20 at the half.

"That was a good timeout for us," Thompson said. "Chris had a
very good stretch. We settled down after that."

The second half was more of the same. Monroe, a 6-foot-11
sophomore who was rookie of the year in the Big East last
season, scored all seven points in a run that produced the
game's biggest lead, 50-29, with 9:47 left to play.

Still, it was better than last season, when Georgetown hosted
the Tigers at the Verizon Center and cruised to a 100-38
victory.

This is the time of year when major programs beef up on
opponents that are willing but overmatched. Savannah State is
happy to face the Hoyas because coach Horace Broadnax played for
the 1984 Georgetown team that won the NCAA championship. That
team was coached by John Thompson, father of the Hoyas' current
coach.

"For us to come down here was for Horace as much as anything
else," Thompson said. "He's Georgetown to us as much as Savannah
State."

Savannah State was the joke of the college basketball world a
few years ago, losing all 28 games in 2004-05. Broadnax came on
board the following season.

The Tigers, with one of the smallest athletic budgets in the
country, have shown steady improvement under Broadnax, compiling
a 15-14 record last season.

"This program is going to grow," Broadnax said. "If we're going
to compete with the Georgetowns of the world, then we've got to
step it up."

Savannah State became a Division I program in 2002, playing as
an independent with no conference affiliation.

Broadnax took over one of the country's worst programs, a school
that went 9-102 from 2001-05 and once shot 1-for-23 in a half
against Kansas.

This was a rare opportunity for Savannah State to host a Top 25
team at 6,000-seat Tiger Arena, which appeared about half full
on an afternoon when many college football rivalry games were on
TV. The announced attendance was 3,176.
