Auxerre beats Monaco 2-0 to take French lead

By TRUNG LATIEULE
Associated Press Writer

PARIS(AP) -- Auxerre beat Monaco 2-0 to earn its seventh straight
win and take the top spot in the French league on Saturday.

Auxerre has 26 points from 13 matches, one clear of Bordeaux and
Lyon.

Defending champion Bordeaux lost its first home match this
season, going down 1-0 to Valenciennes, while Lyon was held to
1-1 at last-place Grenoble.

Also, it was: Lens 2, Nancy 1 and Rennes 2, Le Mans 1.

In Auxerre, defender Adama Coulibaly outjumped the Monaco
defense to head home a free kick from Benoit Pedretti on the
stroke of halftime.

Delvin Ndinga sealed the win in the 88th minute, playing a
one-two with Daniel Niculae before placing the ball out of
goalkeeper Stephane Ruffier's reach.

"We did not expect to lead the league tonight after a rough
start to the season when we lost our first three matches,"
Auxerre coach Jean Fernandez told Canal Plus television.
"There's a bit of luck, otherwise we can't win seven matches in
a row, but there's also talent, both individual and collective.
We have the potential to finish at least in the top 10."

Monaco, with 22 points, played without Brazilian midfielder
Nene, the league-leading striker with nine goals.

In Bordeaux, midfielder Fahid Ben Khalfallah pulled the ball
back for Mamadou Samassa, who beat goalkeeper Cedric Carrasso
with a diagonal shot in the eighth minute to raise his season
tally to five.

"We knew we had to be wary of counterattacks," Bordeaux coach
Laurent Blanc told Europe 1 radio. "We conceded a goal on the
first fast break of Valenciennes.

"Teams mostly defend when they come to Stade Chaban-Delmas.
Valenciennes opened the scoring and then defended very well."

The result is not a complete surprise as Valenciennes, which
trails Bordeaux by just two points, has both the most potent
offense in the league and the best record on the road.

Bordeaux missed playmaker Yoann Gourcuff, who injured his groin
on Wednesday in France's infamous World Cup qualifier against
Ireland. Forward Marouane Chamakh joined the list of injured
Bordeaux players as he had a bruised hip and was replaced by
David Bellion in the 17th.

In Grenoble, Bafetimbi Gomis set up forward Cesar Delgado, who
opened the scoring for Lyon in the 65th.

Grenoble was down to 10 men in the 70th after Laurent Courtois
was sent off but managed to equalize in the 72nd when substitute
Danijel Ljuboja outpaced the Lyon defense to collect a long pass
and beat France goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.

"We played too poorly to deserve more (than a draw)," Lyon
manager Claude Puel told Europe 1 radio. "We lost two points
that could be important in the title race."

In Lens, Paul Alo'o Efoulou notched his fourth goal this season
to give Nancy the lead. Alo'o Efoulou received a headed pass
from midfielder Youssouf Hadji before firing home from close
range in the 52nd.

Forward Issam Jemaa leveled for Lens in the 81st, converting a
rebound after goalkeeper Gennaro Bracigliano had stopped a shot
from Toifilou Maoulida.

Three minutes later, Bracigliano could only deflect a cross from
Sebastien Roudet into the path of Kevin Monnet-Paquet, who
tucked home the winner.

In Rennes, defender Kader Mangane put the host side ahead in the
eighth minute, slotting home after goalkeeper Didier Ovono
missed the ball from a corner by Sylvain Marveau.

But forward Roland Lamah equalized for Le Mans with a strike
from the edge of the box in the 53rd.

Asamoah Gyan beat the offside trap in the 80th to slip the ball
past Ovono and give Rennes the victory. The forward consolidated
his spot as the second most prolific striker in the league with
seven goals.

Le Mans lost its fourth straight match to remain in the
relegation zone with eight points.

On Sunday, Nice hosts Toulouse, Saint-Etienne faces Lorient and
Lille visits Montpellier.

Real Madrid leads in Spain as Barcelona slips up

MADRID(AP) -- Real Madrid led the Spanish league after beating
Racing Santander 1-0 and Barcelona could only draw 1-1 against
Athletic Bilbao on Saturday.

Madrid has 28 points and Barcelona 27. The teams meet on Nov. 29
in Barcelona.

Gonzalo Higuain's first-half goal, following up on a rebound of
a Kaka shot, was enough for Madrid to secure three points.

Daniel Alves broke the deadlock for Barcelona at San Mames
Stadium charging on to a Xavi Hernandez pass to score in the
53rd minute. Substitute Gaizka Toquero equalized 10 minutes
later.

Barcelona was without striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, due to a
hamstring injury. Defenders Rafael Marquez and Eric Abidal and
midfielder Yaya Toure were also sidelined, with swine flu.

The European champion controlled the game in the early stages,
keeping the ball in Bilbao's half and creating several good
chances.

Leo Messi, playing in attack alongside Andres Iniesta and Pedro
Rodriguez, was a constant threat.

Bilbao, which was knocked out of the Copa del Rey by
second-division Rayo Vallecano this month, allowed the Catalans
to dominate possession and tried to hit them on the break.

Bilbao's Fernando Llorente earned a free kick when Dmytro
Chygrynskiy brought the striker down outside the area in the
41st. Francisco Yeste blasted the kick over. Javi Martinez had
his team's best chance of the first half when he rose unmarked
to meet a Yeste corner, although his header went wide.

With the scores level and the clock ticking down Barcelona coach
Pep Guardiola replaced Messi and Xavi Hernandez with Bojan Krkic
and Thierry Henry, and despite some late pressure they could not
create a second goal.

Madrid coach Manuel Pellegrini played Higuain alongside Karim
Benzema in attack, with Raul Gonzalez starting on the bench and
Cristiano Ronaldo still out.

The first half hour saw a marked improvement on most of Madrid's
performances this season. The team looked comfortable on the
ball and carved out several clear chances before fading in the
second half.

"We have to take into account that some important players are
missing due to injury," Real Madrid director general Jorge
Valdano said. "We lacked brilliance and there were some boring
spells, although we emerged with credit."

Higuain struck the post and Kaka drew a fine save from Rodriguez
during an early spell of fluid passing. Alvaro Arbeloa also
struck the post, while midfield playmaker Xabi Alonso had one of
his best games for Madrid.

Despite Madrid's dominance of possession, Santander looked
dangerous on the break as halftime approached. In the 38th,
Mohamed Tchite managed to burst past Marcelo and Ezequiel Garay
before shooting wide.

Madrid celebrated soon after the break when Benzema tapped in a
cross from Esteban Granero with his instep - only for the
referee to rule the striker offside.

The intensity of Madrid's early play faded as the game wore on
and Raul replaced Benzema on the hour.

Higuain nearly scored his second when Royston Drenthe set him up
after a defensive mix-up, but Rodriguez saved the shot.

Santander's Sergio Canales was ruled offside after scoring in
the 78th although replays appeared to show the goal was legal.

Earlier, Sevilla beat Tenerife 2-1 to notch 25 points and keep
it in touch with the leaders, while Atletico Madrid lost 2-1 to
Deportivo La Coruna after an injury-time penalty to stay in the
relegation zone.

Sevilla's Diego Perotti tapped home in the 33rd minute from a
cross by winger Jesus Navas. Renato's long-range strike straight
after the break underlined the Andalusian team's attacking
superiority.

However, Juan Francisco "Nino" Martinez made it 2-1 in the 76th
with a first-time shot.

In Tenerife, Sergio Aguero put Atletico ahead in the fourth
minute after a lapse by defender Alberto Lopo gave the Argentina
striker space to shoot from an acute angle.

La Coruna defender Diego Colotto equalized in the 21st, heading
in at the far post from a corner.

Jose Guardado scored from the penalty spot deep into injury time
to leave Atletico with seven points and one win from its first
11 games of the season. La Coruna is fourth with 22 points.

On Sunday, it's: Xerez vs. Sporting Gijon; Villarreal vs.
Valladolid; Espanyol vs. Getafe; Mallorca vs. Almeria; Malaga
vs. Zaragoza and Osasuna vs. Valencia.

Inter wins 3-1 at Bologna to lead Serie A by 8pts

MILAN(AP) -- Inter Milan defeated Bologna 3-1 and extended its
lead in the Serie A to eight points on Saturday.

Parma improved to third following a 3-2 win against Fiorentina.

Inter has 32 points, eight more than Juventus. Parma followed
with 23, and AC Milan with 22.

Juventus plays Udinese on Sunday, while Milan meets Cagliari.

Diego Milito, Mario Balotelli and Esteban Cambiasso scored for
Inter, which finished with 10 players after fullback Maicon was
sent off for abusive language.

"We had a good game tonight and this win means we can put some
pressure on those who are chasing us," Inter goalkeeper Julio
Cesar said.

"It is difficult when you concede a goal immediately after
scoring, but we stayed calm and played our normal game to win.
It wasn't easy playing Bologna, but we played in such a way that
it seemed as though it was an easy win."

Milito gave Inter the lead in the 22nd. Lucio crossed the ball
back into the box after a corner had been cleared, and Milito
spun and struck a shot past goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano.

Marcelo Zalayeta immediately equalized for Bologna. His strike
partner Adailton found him with a long pass and the Zalayeta
fired past Cesar.

Balotelli should have put Inter back into the lead in the 29th
after beating the offside trap, but he hesitated and Viviano
raced off his line to smother the shot.

In the 36th, Dejan Stankovic nearly doubled the score. Stankovic
hit a low shot past Viviano, but it hit both posts and the
goalkeeper was able to reach the rebound first.

Balotelli gave Inter the lead three minutes before halftime.
Maicon swung over a corner and the young striker headed in from
close range.

After halftime, Milito went close to scoring his second but
hammered a shot against the bar in the 57th.

Milito did play a part in Inter's third. He led a counterattack
before finding Cambiasso, who sealed the win from close range.

Parma looked comfortable in the first half against Fiorentina
and they tied 1-1 by halftime, following goals from Fiorentina's
Alberto Gilardino and Parma's Nicola Amoruso.

Valeri Bojinov gave Parma the lead in the 52nd, but Gilardino
hit back with his second 10 minutes later.

In the 67th Davide Lanzafame fired in the winner with a
right-footed volley that gave Fiorentina goalkeeper Sebastien
Frey little chance.

AMSTERDAM(AP) -- Byran Ruiz scored a late goal Saturday for FC
Twente to beat Vitesse Arnhem 1-0 and lead by five points in the
Dutch league.

The Costan Rica winger converted Ronnie Stam's free kick in the
85th minute for his 10th goal of the season as Steve McClaren's
side secured its ninth win in a row.

FC Twente, which has yet to lose this season, has 38 points. PSV
Eindhoven, which hosts Heracles Almelo on Sunday and is the
league's only other unbeaten team, is next with 33, four points
ahead of Ajax. The Amsterdam side hosts SC Heerenveen on Sunday.

Also Saturday, forward Jeremain Lens scored in each half to
guide AZ Alkmaar to a 4-2 win at Roda JC. Rasmus Elm and
Jonathas also scored second-half goals for AZ, while Pa Modou

Man Utd cruise to 3-0 win over Everton

By DANIEL ROSE
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Alex Ferguson saw Manchester United get their
title challenge back on track with a resounding 3-0 win at home
to Everton on Saturday and warned table-topping Chelsea that the
Red Devils are in hot pursuit.

Darren Fletcher's stunning volley gave United the lead on 35
minutes before second-half efforts from Michael Carrick and
Antonio Valencia's deflected shot sealed a one-sided victory.

The champions remain five points behind Chelsea after their
defeat at Stamford Bridge two weeks ago but leapfrog Arsenal
into second place.

Ferguson said: "It was a controlled performance and we showed a
lot of patience in the first half but got the first goal at the
right time.

"I have always said we get stronger towards the second half of
the season.

"If we get to the New Year and we are within a point or two
points of Chelsea and around about the top of the league we have
a great chance."

United were boosted by the return of defender Nemanja Vidic
while Michael Owen was handed a rare Premier League start
alongside Wayne Rooney up front but failed to impress.

The champions dominated possession early on but lacked any real
cutting edge and it was Everton who forced the first meaningful
save out of either goalkeeper when Louis Saha's snapshot was
gathered by Edwin van der Sar.

It was no surprise when Fletcher gave United the lead ten
minutes before half time with a stunning solo strike.

Patrice Evra's left wing cross was headed back across goal by
Valencia and Fletcher unleashed a sweetly struck right foot
volley into the top right corner from 18 yards out.

Owen passed up a glorious chance to double the lead ten minutes
into the second half, latching onto Valencia's pass before
rounding goalkeeper Tim Howard only to take himself too wide and
firing into the side netting.

Marouane Fellaini gave the home fans a fright seconds later when
he had the ball in van der Sar's net but the effort was
correctly ruled out for offside.

Van der Sar was forced to come racing off his line to save at
the feet of Tim Cahill in the 59th minute as Everton began to
pose a greater threat.

Rooney was unlucky not to make it 2-0 when his long range
pile-driver shaved Tim Howard's crossbar.

Owen made a mess of another one-on-one with Howard in the 67th
minute when by hesitating as he went to shoot and allowing
Leighton Baines to get back and make a last ditch tackle.

The England striker's blushes were spared as Carrick drilled
home United's second from the resulting corner.

Ryan Giggs picked out Rooney and his wayward shot went straight
back to Giggs, who crossed for Carrick to shoot into the bottom
left corner from just inside the penalty area.

Valencia wrapped up the points 14 minutes from time with a low
angled drive which looped over a helpless Howard after being
deflected by Baines.

Everton manager David Moyes said: "This is always a tough place
to come but we did not compete well enough, especially in the
first half."

Bent dents Arsenal's title challenge

By CHRIS TUPLING
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Darren Bent scored the only goal as Arsenal,
second-placed before the kick off, lost surprisingly 1-0 at the
Stadium of Light to an in jury-hit Sunderland.

Without the absent Robin van Persie, Arsenal provided little
threat and Sunderland won more easily than the score suggests.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger also left out Russian star Andrey
Arshavin from the starting line up and as a result his team
failed to score in any competition for the first time this
season.

Sunderland were also weakened by injuries to goalkeeper Craig
Gordon, and, most importantly, to Bent's strike partner Kenwyne
Jones.

There was an element of luck about Bent's winning goal in the
71st minute when his header struck the knee of substitute
team-mate Frazier Campbell and came back into his path to score
from five yards.

But Sunderland manager Steve Bruce praised Bent who earned a
measure of notoriety for his recent winner against Liverpool
which struck an errant beach ball on its way into the net.

Bruce said: "I thought Bent was outstanding and not just for his
winning goal. He brought so much more to our play, linking up
with the midfield and working so hard up front on his own.

"Darren was terrific, absolutely stunning. I think it might have
been his best performance for us and he is getting better all
the time since he joined us."

Wenger decided to start with Croatia striker Eduardo up front
and he made no impact before being replaced by Theo Walcott with
15 minutes remaining.

Alex Song came close to converting Eduardo's pass in the 33rd
minute while Cesc Fabregas shot over the bar from a good
position.

Fit-again Thomas Rosicky might have done better with an opening
early in the second half before Arshavin entered the fray as a
60th minute substitute for the disappointing Aaron Ramsay.

Bruce sent on Anton Ferdinand and Bolo Zenden for Andy Reid and
John Mensah in the 76th minute but Arsenal failed to mount the
expected late pressure.

The nearest Arsenal came to equalising was in the 89th minute
when a strong shout for a penalty after substitute Carlos Vela
had been brought down was rejected.

Wenger admitted that van Persie's absence with an ankle injury
was a decisive factor in his team's failure to continue their
remarkable scoring record.

Wenger said: "I do not want to use van Persie's injury as an
excuse but he is a very important player for us and of course he
was missed.

"This was a big setback and a disappointment. We did not play at
our usual level. Maybe that was because of the international
break and some of my players seemed to struggle to get motivated
and ready."

Delighted Bruce said: "It is always nice to beat in a top four
team. I was delighted with the performance, the spirit, the
life. Arsenal are such a fluid side we had to stifle them \2013 and
we did."

Hull and West Ham in 3-3 dramatic draw

By GEOFF McALLISTER
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Portuguese defender Manuel Da Costa scored his
first Premier League goal to help West Ham snatch a 3-3 draw
against ten-man Hull in a thrilling relegation battle at the KC
Stadium.

The Hammers stormed into a 2-0 lead inside the opening 11
minutes thanks to goals from Guillermo Franco and Jack Collison.

Hull staged a stunning comeback and led 3-2 through Carlton
Cole's unlucky own goal, Kamil Zayatte's brilliant volley and a
controversial Jimmy Bullard penalty.

Da Costa equalised 19 minutes from time after Hull defender
Bernard Mendy had been sent off.

West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola said: "It was a strange game. I
could not see them coming back from two-nil down but credit to
them for doing that.

"The reaction from our team was very good. Obviously we need to
improve some things but I cannot fault our effort."

Hull boss Phil Brown had been granted a stay of execution after
Hull's 2-1 win at home to Stoke a fortnight ago but that
reprieve did not last long as West Ham got off to a flying
start.

Italian striker Franco was left unmarked inside the Hull penalty
are to head home Junior Stanislas's corner after just five
minutes.

Collison took advantage of more sloppy defending from the hosts
to make it 2-0 six minutes later.

Wales international Collison outjumped a static Andy Dawson to
reach Scott Parker's cross before looping a header over Hull
goalkeeper Matt Duke from 12 yards for his first goal since
March.

Hull were handed a lifeline in the 27th minute when Cole was
credited with an own goal.

Bullard's long range effort deflected off Parker before flicking
off Cole's head and flying past a stranded Robert Green.

The match was turned on its head by two goals in the final two
minutes of the first half.

Hull were back on level terms in the 44th minute when centre
back Zayatte raced onto Stephen Hunt's free kick and beat Green
with a stunning near post volley.

The Tigers completed an astonishing comeback moments later, with
Bullard firing home from the penalty spot after referee Mark
Clattenburg harshly adjudged Julien Faubert to have fouled Craig
Fagan.

An amazing game took another twist eight minutes after half time
when Mendy was sent off for scything down Parker when he was
through on goal.

West Ham made their numerical advantage tell in the 69th minute.
The Hull defence failed to clear a Stanislas corner, allowing Da
Costa to rifle the loose ball past Duke from close range.

Duke produced a stunning save to keep out Collison's late header
and prevent the Hammers snatching victory.

Hull boss Brown said: "It was an incredible game to watch, a
great advert for the Premier League.

"Even at two-nil down I did not think there was much between the
two teams and was confident we could get something out of the
game.

"Jimmy Bullard was the difference. He dictated the pace of the
game and they could not handle him."

Leaders Chelsea trounce Wolves 4-0

By ALEX CROOK
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti hailed the
strength of his squad after the Premier League leaders cast
aside their injury woes to crush Wolverhampton 4-0 at Stamford
Bridge on Saturday.

Joe Cole scored his first goal in 13 months while Michael Essien
struck twice and Florent Malouda was also on target.

Chelsea cruised to a club record 12th successive home victory
despite being without Frank Lampard, Deco, Michael Ballack and
Didier Drogba.

Ancelotti, who was even able to hand a debut to youngster Gael
Kakuta as a second half substitute, said: "I was pleased
because after 20 minutes it was 3-0 and after that we kept
control of the game.

"We have a very good squad. I can use all the players, also
young players and for a coach this is important."

Wolves were hoping to cash in on Chelsea's lengthy injury list
to notch their first win at Stamford Bridge in 34 years but the
match was all but over after three Chelsea goals in the opening
22 minutes.

Malouda opened the scoring as early as the fifth minute by
planting an unstoppable 20-yard shot into the top corner of
Wayne Hennessey's net.

Malouda turned provider seven minutes later as the Frenchman's
corner was headed in at the near post by Essien.

Essien bagged his second and Chelsea's third with the aid of a
huge error from Wolves goalkeeper Hennessey.

Ghana international Essien picked up the ball on the edge of the
penalty area and Hennessey allowed the midfielder's harmless
looking shot to squirm under his body and into the net.

Cole made it 4-0 11 minutes into the second half. Nicolas Anelka
and Salomon Kalou combined down the right and Hennessey could
not keep out the England midfielder's low left shot.

Essien came agonisingly close to completing his hat-trick midway
through the half when his shot was tipped onto the crossbar by
Hennessey.

Ancelotti had an ominous warning for Chelsea's title rivals,
saying: "We have to think we can do better.

"We are where we are. We are happy because we played very well
and we win. We do not want to think it was an easy game.

"It was easy because we played very well. When Chelsea play at
their best it is difficult to play against Chelsea."

Wolves have now conceded eight goals in their last two games
after being thrashed 4-1 at home by Arsenal on their last
outing.

Manager Mick McCarthy warned his side they face a difficult
season ahead.

McCarthy said: "I agree with Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea were
fantastic.

"We started quite well, which sounds ridiculous when you have
been beaten 4-0 and it could have been a lot more.

"The reality is if you gift them two goals in the first 11
minutes it is going to be a difficult afternoon.

"We are in a relegation dogfight from now on and we have to
understand that and get on with it. We did not expect to get
anything from our last two games."

By WALTER SIMON
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Emile Heskey scored his first goal since April to
earn Aston Villa a late 1-1 draw with Burnley at Turf Moor.

England World Cup candidate Heskey last scored against West Ham
on April 18 but he did his cause no harm by snatching an 86th
minute leveller just when it looked like Burnley's superb home
record would continue.

Villa had Stylian Petrov back in the side in place of Nigel
Reo-Coker but it was all Burnley in the first half and they
might have led by more than the one goal at the interval.

That goal came in the ninth minute when Steven Caldwell beat
Villa defender Richard Dunne to Robbie Blake's free kick to head
in.

Burnley manager Owen Coyle tried to see the draw in perspective
although he was disappointed his team had been unable to hang on
at the end.

Coyle said: "This result is a measure of how far we have come in
a short time.

"If you had asked me a couple of years ago when we were in the
Championship if I would have been happy with a draw against
Aston Villa, I would have said yes.

"I thought we were worth the three points. We had some terrific
opportunities but their goalkeeper made some outstanding saves
and they defended well to keep us out.

"Overall we paid a heavy price for not defending the second ball
from a set piece but credit to Villa, they have some proud and
gifted players and we knew they had the quality to come back at
us.

"At this level every game is a test for us but it is one we are
relishing."

Andre Bikey should have added another in the 31st minute but
headed wide when unmarked at a corner ten yards out.

Brad Friedel made a series of important saves as Burnley went in
search of more goals and paid the price for wasting their
opportunities.

Friedel's long kick down field set up a rare scoring chance for
Gabby Agbonlahor who could only drag his shot wide with only
Brian Jensen to beat.

Jensen got away with one major misjudgement when he was stranded
after coming and missing one corner but was punished for a
similar crime with four minutes left.

This time the burly Danish goalkeeper punched away a corner when
he might have caught it, allowing James Milner to cross for
Heskey to steer home.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill said: "We came into the match with
plenty of confidence even allowing for Burnley's great home
record. We thought it would be open and that we could win.

"The wind and raid played a key part but Burnley adapted better
than we did in the first half. Their goal was a poor one from
our point of view but we fought back with great determination
and I was pleased with our response."

Birmingham hold on to beat Fulham 1-0

By MARK HENDRY
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Lee Bowyer scored the only goal as Birmingham
overcame heavy second-half pressure from Fulham to win 1-0 at St
Andrew's.

Bowyer's goal was his third in the Premier League this season
and it was enough to take Birmingham into 13th position, level
on points with Fulham who are two places higher on goal
difference.

Fulham have now gone ten away matches in league and cup
competitions since their last win and they failed to make the
most of their overall dominance.

Fulham manager Roy Hodgson found defeat difficult to take after
the way his team had swarmed all over Birmingham but had nothing
to show for it.

Hodgson said: "We paid the ultimate price for a single mistake.
We had so much possession that it seemed impossible for us not
to score at some stage, but it just did not happen for us.

"I find it hard to explain away a defeat in those circumstances.
We were dominant for so much of the match and I find it hard to
criticise a good and competent Fulham performance."

Hodgson's description of Birmingham's winner as a defensive
mistake was a little unfair on Bowyer and James McFadden who
fashioned it for the much-travelled former West Ham and Leeds
midfield player.

McFadden spotted Bowyer, capped once by England, free with an
exquisite pass and Bowyer's looping finish gave Fulham
goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer no chance of saving.

Schwarzer made an excellent save to deny McFadden a second
Birmingham goal but most of the action was at the other end
where the Blues were obliged to defend desperately at times.

As Birmingham moved a step closer to mid-table security, Hodgson
was unable to provide clues to Fulham's away failures.

Hodgson said: "I don't know why this should be the case because
our level of performance has been capable and we have produced
some football without being properly rewarded at times.

"I would be more worried if we were playing badly but we are
not. Even so, I don't want us to have to rely on our results at
Craven Cottage to see us through."

Birmingham manager Alex McLeish considered the result and
admitted his team had been a little fortunate to win.

"It was a welcome three points. We have striven hard over the
last few games and played well without always getting the
rewards.

"We did not play well against Fulham but we have won, so in some
ways it is justice levelling itself out.

"In the end it was down to grit and determination because it was
a horrible day in terms of the weather and those were the sort
of qualities likely to succeed.

"There was not much about the match to remember but the goal was
a bit of quality. It was a fantastic ball from McFadden and the
finish from Bowyer was world class."

Liverpool held 2-2 by Man City

By NEIL RICHARDS
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Liverpool's stuttering start to the season
continued as they were held to a 2-2 draw by Manchester City
after a thrilling second half at Anfield.

It is now just one win in ten in all competitions for Rafael
Benitez's side, who were indebted to a late Yossi Benayoun
strike for rescuing a point just 74 seconds after Stephen
Ireland had given the visitors the lead.

A dour match burst into life five minutes after the interval
when Martin Skrtel beat Emmanuel Adebayor to poke home a
left-wing free-kick from Steven Gerrard.

But Adebayor got his revenge on 69 minutes, making no mistake
with a firm header past Jose Reina after the Slovakian defender
had left him unmarked at a Craig Bellamy corner.

Billed as a match between a side ever-present among the top-four
contenders and a big-spending neighbour eager to join the party,
City will be happier with the outcome.

But Mark Hughes's side have now drawn six in a row and will be
well aware that they have to start turning some of those results
into wins to make an impression at the top of the table.

"That's the frustration for us at the moment," Hughes said.
"We're allowing those winning situations to get away from us and
it's obviously the old adage that after a team's just scored it
is a little bit vulnerable. We lived up to that."

Hughes added: "We're disappointed because I think we were the
better team today and showed great character to come back from a
goal down."

The Reds were looking for an early goal to boost their fragile
confidence and they almost got it inside five minutes. Gerrard
whipped in a free-kick from the right, Daniel Agger flicked it
on and Skrtel directed a header back across Shay Given.

The Republic of Ireland goalkeeper, who was victimised by
France's controversial winner in Paris in Wednesday's World Cup
qualifier, reacted magnificently to make a stunning save to his
left.

Agger suffered a clash of heads in that move which opened up a
nasty cut above his eyebrow. While he was off having treatment
it almost profited the visitors, as Kolo Toure picked out a pass
to where the Dane should have been and Gareth Barry's header
produced a diving save from Reina.

Agger was concussed and needed stitches in the wound, a worry
for Liverpool with a vital Champions League match with Debrecen
coming up on Wednesday. Sotirios Kyrgiakos, the Greece
international, came on to play in the heart of the home defence.

Less than five minutes later the Liverpool injury curse struck
again. Ryan Babel and Gerrard collided on the edge of the City
area and both limped off. The Reds captain was able to continue
but although the Dutch striker did come back on to the pitch he
was clearly troubled with a foot injury and left soon after,
being replaced by Benayoun.

Reds boss Benitez said: "I'm a little bit disappointed because
we had chances at the end but with the problems that we had
before - two substitutions in 18 minutes - and still to come
back showed good character.

"Up until the last minute we were pushing and pushing. The
players worked so hard that you can say nothing (to criticise
them)."

As always, Gerrard was the main source of inspiration and he saw
one shot well blocked by Toure just before the half hour and was
just off target with the follow-up.

The first half was forgettable, but the second did not take long
to catch fire as Sktrel's tap-in gave Liverpool the lead with
their first goal from a free-kick this season.

Unfortunately for Benitez, their Achilles heel was then exposed
again, Adebayor's leveller from the corner being the 12th they
had conceded from a set-piece this season.

Having lacked ambition in the opening period, City suddenly
sensed they could snatch all three points and got their reward
on 78 minutes. Substitute Carlos Tevez played a reverse ball
into Shaun Wright-Phillips, who turned past Skrtel and produced
a low cross that was turned in by Ireland from a position that
was bordering on offside.

City had barely had chance to celebrate when Liverpool drew
level, David Ngog's cross being deflected by a defender right
into the path of the unmarked Benayoun who made no mistake from
close range.

The Merseysiders might even have won it in stoppage time, but
Lucas failed to even hit the target when left all alone at a
corner.

Chelsea beats Wolves 4-0 while Arsenal loses

By ROBERT MILLWARD
AP Football Writer

LONDON(AP) -- Michael Essien scored twice Saturday as Chelsea
romped to a 4-0 win over Wolves to lead the Premier League by
five points, while Arsenal tumbled 1-0 at Sunderland and
Manchester United rose to second with a 3-0 victory over
Everton.

Liverpool and Manchester City fell further out of contention
with a 2-2 draw.

Goals by Florent Malouda and Essien put injury-hit Chelsea 3-0
up inside the first 22 minutes before Joe Cole scored his first
goal in 13 months in the second half.

The result meant that Chelsea has won all seven home games and
hasn't conceded a goal at Stamford Bridge since the opening game
of the season against Hull. Chelsea has 33 points from 13 points
and also has a club record 12 home wins in a row in all
competitions.

"It was an easy game because we played very well," Chelsea
manager Carlo Ancelotti said. "After 20 minutes it was 3-0 and
afterwards we maintained control of the game."

Darren Bent scored Sunderland's 71st-minute winner in a surprise
victory over Arsenal, which had won six of its previous seven
league games but was left on 25 points from 12 games.

"It's a big setback because you do not prepare yourself to drop
points in a situation like that," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger
said. "It's not especially worrying but it's frustrating."

Darren Fletcher, Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia scored Man
United's goals in a routine triumph over Everton at Old Trafford
as the defending champions moved up to second with 28 points
from 13 games.

Fletcher scored in the 35th minute with a powerful first-time
shot into the corner of the net from the edge of the area.
Carrick steered home a low left-footed strike from Ryan Giggs'
pass and Valencia added the third in the 76th.

While Liverpool and Manchester shared a point each at Anfield,
the result did not help either team's chances of catching
Chelsea in the title race. Man City has 21 points and Liverpool
20.

Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel, who had a header acrobatically
saved by goalkeeper Shay Given in the first half, turned home a
free kick by Steven Gerrard in the 50th minute for his first
goal at the club.

Beaten to the ball by Skrtel for the Liverpool goal, Adebayor
was left unmarked by the Slovakia defender and was allowed a
free header to turn home the 69th-minute equalizer from a
corner.

Stephen Ireland was also left unmarked to prod home Shaun
Wright-Phillips' pass to put City ahead in the 76th. But Yossi
Benayoun made it 2-2 seconds later from close range after good
work by David Ngog.

Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez, who has come under fire for his
team's poor form, said his team was still good enough to finish
in the top four.

"You cannot be happy with a home draw, but to lose three
(injured) players from your game plan is very difficult,"
Benitez said. "City have quality. But if we can improve and play
at our top level, we will be in the top four."

Aston Villa came from a goal down to draw 1-1 at Burnley where
it has not won in 24 visits dating back to 1936.

Steven Caldwell gave Burnley a ninth-minute lead at Turf Moor
only for Emile Heskey to equalize in the 86th.

Lee Bowyer scored Birmingham's 16th-minute winner in a 1-0
victory over Fulham at St. Andrews, and there was a six-goal
thriller between Hull and West Ham.

Visitor West Ham went two goals up in the first 11 minutes
through Guillermo Franco and Jack Collison, only for Hull to hit
back three times to lead at halftime.

Jimmy Bullard's free kick was deflected in, Kamil Zayatte made
it 2-2 and Bullard scored his first goal for Hull from the
penalty spot after Julien Faubert had fouled Craig Fagan.

Hull's Brendan Mendy was sent off in the 54th minute for a
professional foul and Manuel Da Costa scored West Ham's
equalizer in the 69th.

West Bromwich Albion, which has five players going to the World
Cup for five different nations, regained top spot in the League
Championship with a 4-1 victory over Bristol City. The Baggies,
who are one point clear, replaced Newcastle which does not play
until Monday at Preston.

By NESHA STARCEVIC

FRANKFURT(AP) -- Werder Bremen won 6-0 in Freiburg with five
second-half goals to pull past idle Bayer Leverkusen to the top
of the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Hannover lost its first game after the suicide of captain and
goalkeeper Robert Enke, going down 2-0 at Schalke, which moved
into third place. A minute of silence was held at all stadiums
in memory of Enke, who threw himself before a train Nov. 10
after suffering from depression for six years.

"It was very difficult today," said Arnold Bruggink, Hannover's
new captain. "But after the minute of silence it simply got
under way. And once it starts, you keep going somehow. We tried
everything."

Coach Andreas Bergmann said it was good to return to a stadium
atmosphere.

"I told my players to try to play football again," he said. "Not
for Robert, but with Robert. He will stay in our hearts."

Defending champion Wolfsburg lost 3-2 at home to Nuremberg,
Stuttgart rallied to rescue a 1-1 draw against bottom-place
Hertha Berlin, Hoffenheim jumped to fourth place by winning 4-0
in Cologne and Borussia Moenchengladbach also won on the road,
beating Eintracht Frankfurt 2-1.

In the late match, Mainz earned a 0-0 draw at Borussia Dortmund.

Mesut Oezil scored one goal, set up three and earned a penalty
to lead Bremen past Freiburg and stretch his team's unbeaten run
to 20 games in all competitions. Bremen has 26 points and leads
on goal difference over Leverkusen, which can regain the top
spot if it wins or draws at Bayern Munich on Sunday.

"We played a very, very good game," Bremen coach Thomas Schaaf
said. "We opened strongly and had many chances already in the
first half. They started well in the second half but then we
scored again and that took the wind out of them."

Schalke now has 25 points and Hoffenheim 23. Hamburger SV also
has 23 and can pull away if it beats Bochum in Sunday's second
match.

Despite playing without injured striker Claudio Pizarro, Werder
piled on the pressure from kickoff, playing a quick passing game
that left Freiburg no chance. Schaaf's team missed several
chances and hit the post twice before Hugo Almeida connected
with a header from a cross by Oezil in the 33rd.

Marko Marin scored with a free kick from an acute angle to
double Bremen's lead and launch the visitors' second-half
barrage.

Almeida had another goal, Oezil scored himself and then earned
the penalty converted by Naldo before Markus Rosenberg completed
the rout.

Jefferson Farfan scored in the 69th and Jan Moravek got the
insurance goal in injury time to help Schalke beat Hannover.

Hannover players had a small No. 1 printed on the front of their
shirts in memory of Enke. Goalkeeper Florian Fromlowitz, who had
been Enke's understudy, was given a big round of applause before
kickoff.

Fromlowitz had some good saves but was helpless when Farfan
connected with a powerful header following a corner from
Rafinha. Moravek scored his first Bundesliga goal from a
counterattack shortly after coming on as a late substitute.

The victory was the first for Felix Magath's team after three
straight draws.

Peer Kluge scored on a counterattack in the third minute of
injury time to secure Nuremberg's victory in Wolfsburg.

Nuremberg outplayed the defending champion, leading twice on
goals from Albert Bunjaku. Wolfsburg rallied both times on a
goal from Ashkan Dejagah and a penalty from Grafite, before
Kluge sealed the upset.

Hoffenheim went up two goals inside the first 11 minutes form
Carlos Eduardo and Chinedu Obasi, Demba Ba scored one minute
into the second half and Vedad Ibisevic earned and converted a
late penalty as Cologne slumped to its fifth home defeat.

Stuttgart, champion two seasons ago, slipped into the relegation
zone after drawing with Hertha, which was fourth last season but
now is desperately trying to lift itself from the bottom.

Hertha appeared headed for its second win of the season when
Adrian Ramos scored in the 49th. But Zdravko Kuzmanovic salvaged
the draw in the 82nd - only to be sent off three minutes later
with his second booking of the game after tangling with Gojko
Kacar, his Serbia teammate from Hertha.

Moenchengladbach scored its second straight away victory on an
own goal by Marco Russ and a header by Roel Brouwers. Eintracht
pulled one back on a penalty from Pirmin Schwegler but could not
avoid its second consecutive loss.

GEOFF McALLISTER
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Steve Finnan aims to set Portsmouth on the road to
Premier League survival at Stoke on Sunday after revealing the
pain of relegation outweighs the joy of winning trophies.

Finnan boasts an impressive medal collection including the
Champions League, FA Cup, European Super Cup and titles from
Divisions One, Two and Three.

The former Liverpool, Fulham and Ireland full back, 33, says he
is still haunted by the scars of being relegated with second
division Notts County 12 years ago.

Finnan said: "There are different pressures at different clubs,
such as trying to stay in the league, winning it or whatever.
But nothing beats the pain of relegation.

"The only time I have actually been relegated before was Notts
County and I can tell you it's a really bad feeling, not nice at
all, it was 12 years ago now and I still remember it.

"It doesn't go away, not even now. Obviously, it is not a nice
feeling for anyone involved.

"Whether it be the players, staff or the fans it is a terrible
feeling.

"Having experienced that already you can try to help and make
sure it doesn't happen again. As a player it is definitely a
feeling you don't want.

"Until you've had that you don't realise how bad it really is."

Portsmouth are already four points adrift of safety after losing
nine of their opening 12 games but Finnan is backing Paul Hart's
side to haul themselves out of danger.

He added: "Everyone at the club believes we can get out of it
and it is a case of having to pick up the points to make sure we
do.

"We all know the circumstances of what we need to do here and
stay in the Premier League and there is a good enough squad here
to stay there."

Manager Hart hopes top-scorer Aruna Dindane will be fit after
limping off at Ewood Park with a hamstring injury while David
James will play despite missing England's friendly defeat to
Brazil in Doha.

Stoke manager Tony Pulis insists there be no room for sentiment
against his former club.

Pulis spent nine months in charge at Fratton Park in 2000.

The Potters boss said: "They are a club I have affinity with.
There was a bad feeling with me and the former owner Milan
Mandaric but that is all cleared up now.

"It was an enjoyable place to work and I have fond memories of
my time there. I think they are a great football club with great
supporters.

"It was my first taste of seeing what your supporters can do for
a club. They were brilliant the year I was there.

"It is never nice to see any of your old clubs struggling and I
hope they can stay up but that won't stop me wanting to beat
them."

Marseille beats PSG 1-0; 15 fans arrested

PARIS(AP) -- Defender Gabriel Heinze scored against his former
teammates to give Marseille a 1-0 win over Paris Saint-Germain
on Friday in a French league match which was postponed from last
month.

An outbreak of swine flu in PSG had forced the match to be
postponed, which set off rioting between the fans in downtown
Marseille. Security was stepped up on Friday and police arrested
15 fans before the rivals clashed at Stade Velodrome; 11
Marseille fans for throwing objects at buses carrying PSG fans
and verbally assaulting police, two more for failing to comply
with police orders, and two PSG fans when they arrived in town.

They missed seeing Heinze, who played three seasons at PSG,
scored his first league goal of the season in the 25th minute,
heading home Fabrice Abriel's free kick past goalkeeper Gregory
Coupet.

Marseille moved up to fourth place in the standings, within
three points of leader Bordeaux.

"We had to win to reduce the gap," Marseille coach Didier
Deschamps said. "We sticked to the basics tonight."

Paris Saint-Germain, which was handed its third loss in four
games, stood in 13th, six points behind Marseille.

Defending champion Bordeaux will host Valenciennes on Saturday
hoping to bounce back after a surprising 2-0 loss at Lille in
the previous round, while second-place Lyon travels to
last-place Grenoble.

Bordeaux coach Laurent Blanc will be without playmaker Yoann
Gourcuff, who picked up a groin injury during France's 1-1 draw
against Ireland on Wednesday that qualified the team for next
year's World Cup.

Midfielder Gregory Sertic and defenders Henrique and Franck
Jurietti will also miss the match.

On Saturday, it's also: Lens vs. Nancy; Rennes vs. Le Mans and
Auxerre vs. Monaco.

Following a strong start to the season, promoted Montpellier
failed to build on the momentum and will try to secure its first
win in four matches when it hosts Lille. Toulouse travels at
Nice and struggling Saint-Etienne hosts Lorient in Sunday's
other games.

Wigan Athletic FC-Tottenham Hotspur Preview

JAMES PIERCY
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - Wilson Palacios has revealed international
team-mates Hendry Thomas and Maynor Figueroa have been taunting
him ahead of Wigan's trip to Tottenham on Sunday.

Spurs midfielder Palacios, 25, faces his former team for the
first time since his 12 million pounds switch to White Hart Lane
in January.

Palacios, Thomas and Figueroa are all firm friends having
starred together for Honduras in qualifying for the World Cup in
South Africa next year.

Palacios said: "This should be a good game. Wigan always play
good football and they will make it difficult for us,
nonetheless we hope to win.

"I still have many friends at the club and I have had three
weeks of them talking to me about the game \2013 sending me loads of
texts.

"Henry is a good player but I would not say he is similar to me.

"We do not share the same style and I believe we like to play a
different sort of game but he is hard to play against.

"Maynor Figueroa probably will not play on Sunday but he is a
good friend of mine from the Honduras squad."

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp will be without captain Ledley
King as the defender misses the visit of Wigan with a hamstring
problem.

England winger Aaron Lennon may return from the ankle injury
which robbed him a place in the England squad for their friendly
defeat to Brazil.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez has confessed his admiration for
Tottenham's aggressive, attacking brand of football.

Martinez has tried to install a flamboyant style within his
Wigan side and has witnessed Tottenham's recent rise under Harry
Redknapp with a degree of envy.

Martinez said: "Over the last 16 months Spurs have been
improving steadily and in every transfer they have looked to
strengthen which has given them a fantastic squad.

"It is a club that has a special feel about it, a team that
plays a certain style and they are exciting to watch.

"With that in mind I think it will be a really open game and a
great advert for Premier League football.

"Harry's curriculum speaks for itself. I have the utmost respect
for him and I am a big admirer of all the work he has done
throughout his career.

"His management skills have made him successful in every
environment he has been in, and now he is putting together a
team who are competing with the very best in the Premier League.

"I think the central midfield is going to see a lot of action.

"The way Spurs play and the talent they have in that area is key
to their game. In the same respect we have great strength in our
midfield to stand up to that threat, so it is certainly going to
be a tough battle to get hold of the ball.

"I am expecting an open encounter, played at a high tempo with
plenty of chances. I think the result is going to depend on who
shows that coolness in front of goal."

Martinez has a relatively slim injury list with only full-back
Figueroa definitely out so the Spaniard may persist with the
same side that drew with Fulham a fortnight ago.

WALTER SIMON
STATS European Football Writer=

LONDON (SE) - David Dunn has rocked Blackburn on the eve of
Sunday's Lancashire derby at Bolton by revealing he could quit
Ewood Park at the end of the season.

Former England midfielder Dunn says he is yet to open talks
about a new deal despite being Blackburn's most consistent
performer this season.

Dunn believes there will be no shortage of takers for his
services when his contract expires in the summer if Blackburn
fail to offer him an extension.

Dunn, who can talk to rivals clubs from January, said: "My
contract is up at the end of the season so we will have to wait
and see what happens there.

"As long as I keep doing my stuff on the pitch, one way or
another, whether it is at Blackburn or elsewhere, there will be
options there for me at the end of the season.

"There have been no talks as yet. I just sit there and keep
doing what I do best on the pitch and everything off the pitch
will take care of itself.

"My agent and the club, if they want to do something that will
be sorted out. If not, we will certainly have options come
January or the end of the season."

Blackburn-born Dunn has made 198 appearances during two spells
with his hometown club and has scored five goals in 10 games
this season, including the winner in Rovers' derby victory over
Burnley.

He added: "Blackburn the club I support and I want to play with.
But likewise everything has got to be right and add up.

"If I'm playing at the club and doing well then I am more than
happy."

Blackburn are considering resting midfielder Keith Andrews after
he played the full 120 minutes of the Republic of Ireland's
controversial World Cup play-off defeat to France.

Bolton manager Gary Megson has warned record signing Johan
Elmander he needs to find his scoring touch or get used to life
on the substitutes' bench.

Sweden international Elmander has scored five goals in 30
Premier League games since a bumper 11 million pounds move from
French club Toulouse in the summer of 2008.

Elmander scored his first goal of the season by coming on to bag
a late consolation in Bolton's 5-1 thrashing at Aston Villa two
weeks ago.

Megson said: "He has found himself out of the team and whether
that has had a positive effect, I don't know.

"It is a big season for him and it was nice he scored against
Aston Villa. He is a good player, but he's got to deliver on a
regular basis the same as everybody else.

"Johan is a fantastic lad but strikers are judged on the number
of goals they score so he knows he has to start hitting the back
of the net."

Bolton will be without influential midfielder Tamir Cohen
because of a groin problem but former Villa defender Jlloyd
Samuel is available after suspension.
