Huff hits homer to lead Orioles past Angels 6-4

ANAHEIM, Calif.(AP) -- David Hernandez appears to be in the
Baltimore Orioles' rotation for the long haul because of
injuries. He shouldn't have to look over his shoulder for a
while.

Hernandez allowed three runs and six hits over 6 2-3 innings
after being staked to a six-run lead in a 6-4 victory over the
Los Angeles Angels on Friday night.

"David knows that it's not a start-by-start basis. It's not a
tryout. He's the guy. So he needs to just relax and prepare
himself to pitch whenever his turn comes up," manager Dave
Trembley said. "I think he did as well tonight as we've seen out
of any of our young guys this season."

Of the four starting pitchers the Orioles are using in this
series - Hernandez, Jeremy Guthrie, Jason Berken and Rich Hill -
only Guthrie had faced the two-time defending AL West champs
before.

"When you face that lineup, they'll make you work for it -
especially those guys at the top," Trembley said. "We've got
some guys who are learning at the major league level, and for
the most part we're real impressed with the progress we're
getting out of our guys. I think it says a lot about the
future."

Hernandez (2-2) struck out two and walked two in his fourth big
league start and second since Koji Uehara went on the disabled
list with elbow tendinitis. The rookie right-hander gave up a
fourth-inning RBI double by Maicer Izturis, and a two-run homer
by Kendry Morales in the sixth.

"Being able to throw my off-speed pitches for strikes was really
huge," Hernandez said. "I was able to locate my slider and
changeup and get early outs, and that's what helped me pitch
deep into the game. Sometimes that's the advantage you have when
you're a pitcher they haven't seen before and they don't really
know what to expect."

Aubrey Huff hit a three-run homer and Luke Scott doubled home
two runs for the Orioles, whose victory dropped the Angels into
a first-place tie with Texas for the division lead.

"The guy they had tonight, he has a nice arm and good velocity.
The scouting reports said he was kind of wild, but I didn't see
that tonight," Torii Hunter said of Hernandez. "I remember last
year we faced a lot of young guys and first-time guys, and we
didn't do so well."

George Sherrill got three outs for his 18th save in 21 chances.

Ervin Santana (1-4) threw 99 pitches over five innings, allowing
six runs, eight hits and three walks in his first start off the
disabled list, after missing two starts because of stiffness in
his right forearm and triceps.

Two of the runs were unearned as a result of shortstop Erick
Aybar's fielding error - only the third for Aybar in his last 45
games. In his four starts this season at Angel Stadium, Santana
is 0-2 with a 12.12 ERA.

"You can go on rehab assignments - but when you come back here,
you've got to find the rhythm. And that's what's going to happen
with Santana," Hunter said. "But you've got to give him at least
a couple of starts because he hasn't pitched in a while. He
still had good stuff, but right now he's not himself and he's
trying to find it."

The Orioles, who came in hitting a major league-best .298 with
runners in scoring position, took a 2-0 lead in the first when
Scott lined a double high off the 18-foot wall in right with the
bases loaded.

Scott has driven in at least one run in four consecutive games,
equaling the longest streak of his four-year career. The last
time he did it was May 27-30, when he homered in his first four
games off the disabled list and went 8 for 15 with 14 RBIs after
missing 14 games with a left shoulder strain.

Huff, who didn't have an RBI in 15 previous career at-bats
against Santana, made it 5-0 in the third with his 11th homer of
the season. He has 14 RBIs in his last 14 games and a team-high
55 for the season.

NOTES: After the game, the Angels recalled 2B Howie Kendrick
from Triple-A Salt Lake and optioned INF Sean Rodriguez to their
PCL club. ... Orioles LF Nolan Reimold was named AL rookie of
the month for June, after batting .320 with four homers and nine
RBIs. ... Twenty-four of Morales' 26 career homers have come
batting left-handed, including all 14 this season.

Orioles-Angels Preview

By JEFF MEZYDLO
STATS Senior Writer

Baltimore (35-44) at Los Angeles (43-34), 10:05 p.m. EDT

Not much has gone right in the one month Ervin Santana has
pitched for the Los Angeles Angels this season.

The 2008 All-Star hopes things will change Friday night when
he's expected to return from the disabled list to face the
Baltimore Orioles in the continuation of a four-game set at
Angel Stadium.

Sidelined with right triceps inflammation, Santana (1-3, 7.47
ERA) hasn't pitched for Los Angeles since allowing six runs and
eight hits in 4 2-3 innings of an 11-1 loss at Tampa Bay on June
11.

Now, after a solid effort against minor league competition
Sunday and a productive bullpen session Tuesday, manager Mike
Scioscia feels Santana is ready to go.

"We're going to see how he feels," he told the Angels' official
Web site. "When you look at your rotation, you definitely want
your best out there."

Santana, however, hasn't always been at his best this season.
After matching a career high with 16 victories a year ago, the
right-hander missed the first month of the season with an elbow
injury and also dealt with a strained forearm last month. Those
injuries could be a couple of reasons why he's allowed six or
more runs in three of his six starts.

Santana is 2-2 with a 4.60 ERA in seven starts versus Baltimore.

Bobby Abreu hit a pair of homers and drove in four runs, and
Chone Figgins added three hits with an RBI in Los Angeles' 5-2
win on Thursday to open a 10-game homestand. The AL West-leading
Angels (43-34) were coming off consecutive road losses to
second-place Texas.

Abreu, who has just six home runs in his first season with Los
Angeles after hitting 20 for the New York Yankees last year,
recorded his first multihomer game of the year and 14th of his
career.

"It's a big night for Bobby," Scioscia said of Abreu, who's
batting .345 (10 for 29) with three homers, 10 runs scored and
11 RBIs in his last eight games. "Hopefully he'll start doing it
a little more consistently."

Los Angeles, which has won three in a row at home, will try for
its fifth straight victory against last-place Baltimore (35-44),
which has dropped two in a row overall and four consecutive
games on the road. The Orioles are 11-24 away from Camden Yards.

After recording 16 runs and 22 hits in their previous two
contests, the Orioles were held to five hits against the Angels'
John Lackey and Brian Fuentes in the opener.

"You can't beat yourself up over (the offensive inconsistency),"
said Luke Scott, who homered for the second straight game.

Scott has a team-leading 16 home runs and is 5 for 14 (.357)
with three doubles and three RBIs in his last four contests.

Rookie David Hernandez (1-2, 4.19) looks to avoid a second
straight loss for the Orioles after giving up three runs and
eight hits in 5 2-3 innings of a 5-3 defeat to Washington on
Sunday.

The right-hander, who was recalled from the minors to replace
injured fellow rookie Koji Uehara (elbow tendinitis), will make
his fourth career start and first versus the Angels.
