Braves complete sweep of Phillies, 5-2

By CHARLES ODUM
AP Sports Writer

ATLANTA(AP) -- A year after a 9-0 record in Atlanta helped give
Philadelphia momentum for its World Series championship run,
three straight losses at Turner Field left the Phillies feeling
flawed.

Matt Diaz drove in the go-ahead run with an eighth-inning double
and the Braves beat Philadelphia 5-2 on Thursday night to
complete their first home sweep of the Phillies in four years.

Diaz had his second straight three-hit game to lift the Braves
to their fourth consecutive win. The Phillies are less than a
percentage point ahead of Florida, .5131 to .5125, for first in
the NL East.

"We need to turn it around at some point," said first baseman
Ryan Howard of the reeling Phillies, who have lost 12 of 15 to
fall only two games over .500 and two games ahead of the
fourth-place Braves.

"We're just not playing good ball right now, plain and simple,"
Howard said.

The Braves, who failed to beat the Phillies at Turner Field last
season, completed their first home sweep of Philadelphia since
April, 2005.

The Phillies were outscored 21-7 in the sweep and are 2-7
against Atlanta this season.

"Our whole game has got to come together," Phillies manager
Charlie Manuel said. "We've been playing bad baseball."

The sweep brightened the Braves' outlook.

Manager Bobby Cox said the Braves still have "a long way to go,
but we're happy with our position."

The only promising signs for the Phillies were another strong
start for J.A. Happ, who gave up two runs in seven innings, and
two hits by Jimmy Rollins, who ended his career-worst 0-for-28
drought.

"Our game is not together," Manuel said. "I've been saying it
for two or three weeks. ... We're definitely losing games late."

Philaelphia's bullpen suffered losses in two of the three games
in Atlanta.

With the score tied at 2, Brian McCann led off the eighth with a
single off Ryan Madson (2-4). Pinch-runner Jair Jurrjens moved
to second on Yunel Escobar's sacrifice. Diaz followed with his
run-scoring double to the center-field wall.

Pinch-hitter Garret Anderson added his first career pinch-hit
homer, a two-run shot off Madson.

Rafael Soriano pitched the ninth for his eighth save.

Happ, coming off his first career shutout in a 10-0 win at
Toronto on Saturday, gave up a two-run homer to Casey Kotchman
in the fourth inning before retiring the next seven batters. He
gave up seven hits and two runs in seven innings.

The Phillies pulled even with two runs off Javier Vazquez in the
sixth.

The Phillies had a chance to take the lead in the eighth when
Jayson Werth walked, stole second and advanced to third on
McCann's throwing error. Werth tried to score on Mike Gonzalez's
wild pitch to the screen. McCann recovered quickly and threw
back to Gonzalez (3-0), who made the tag on Werth's headfirst
slide.

Replays were inconclusive, but Manuel said "He's out."

Cox said he thought Werth would be safe when he took off from
third.

"I thought he would make it because he's so good," Cox said. "I
like that kid a lot. He's a gamer. He's a manager's dream, I
think. But we made the play and got him out."

Vazquez shut out the Phillies for five innings before giving up
two runs in the sixth.

Vazquez gave up seven hits and two runs in 5 1-3 innings. He did
not walk a batter and struck out five.

Greg Dobbs' double over Gregor Blanco in center field drove in
Chase Utley, who led off with a single. Reliever Peter Moylan
gave up a tying groundout to Pedro Feliz to drive in Werth.

Diaz, making his second straight start in left field, led off
the fourth with a single and scored on Kotchman's two-run homer.
It was only Kotchman's third homer and his first since May 8
against the Phillies' Brad Lidge.

Rollins grounded out in his first at-bat before a single in the
third inning for his first hit since June 18. He added a
fifth-inning single.

NOTES: RHP Tim Hudson proclaimed he cleared his "last hurdle"
after throwing 90 pitches in the bullpen before the game.
Hudson, who had elbow ligament-replacement surgery on July 27,
2008, is scheduled for his first rehab assignment on July 19 at
Class A Myrtle Beach. ... Phillies OF Raul Ibanez (groin) had
his first rehab game at Double-A Redding pushed back to Thursday
or Friday.

Phillies-Braves Preview

By MIKE LIPKA
STATS Writer

Philadelphia (39-35) at Atlanta (36-40), 7:10 p.m. EDT

With their once-dynamic lineup scuffling and their ace in a
funk, the Philadelphia Phillies are clinging to the smallest
possible lead in the NL East.

They probably never figured to be turning to J.A. Happ for
stability.

Coming off his first major league shutout, Happ will get the
start Thursday night against the Atlanta Braves, hoping to help
the defending champions avoid their first three-game sweep at
Turner Field in more than four years.

The Phillies have dropped 13 of their last 17, and there were
few positive signs on Wednesday. NL championship series and
World Series MVP Cole Hamels failed to get through five innings
for his second straight start and Philadelphia didn't manage a
hit until the seventh inning of an 11-1 loss.

"They took it to us," Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said. "We
got beat bad."

Much of the slump coincides with slugger Raul Ibanez's stint on
the disabled list. Philadelphia's lineup has been inconsistent
without him, scoring two or fewer runs five times in the last 11
contests.

Ibanez has hit 22 of the Phillies' NL-leading 107 homers.

The Phillies (39-36) have won the NL East each of the last two
years, but their current lead has slipped to one-half game over
second-place Florida. A loss Thursday would mark Philadelphia's
first three-game sweep in Atlanta since April 22-24, 2005 and
drop it into a virtual tie with the idle Marlins.

The New York Mets are two games back and Atlanta (37-40) is
within three games of the top of the crowded division. The
Braves are 6-2 against the Phillies in 2009 after going 4-14
last year.

"Whenever the Phillies are playing against us, we want to let
them know that we are here and we're going to fight for that
division," infielder Martin Prado told the Braves' official Web
site. "It's not going to be easy for them."

Another Atlanta win will be difficult, however, if Happ (5-0,
3.00 ERA) pitches like he did Saturday in Toronto. The
left-hander allowed five hits and no walks, needing just 100
pitches to complete a 10-0 win.

"It all kind of came together," said Happ, 3-0 with a 3.25 ERA
in seven starts after beginning the season in the bullpen.

He made two starts against the Braves in September, allowing two
runs and eight hits in 12 2-3 innings, and earned a decision
with six shutout frames on Sept. 17 during a 6-1 victory in
Atlanta.

The Braves are looking for their fourth straight triumph and
will counter with Javier Vazquez (5-7, 3.04), who ranks among
the top 10 in the NL in ERA, but has had trouble with run
support at times.

He took a tough 1-0 loss against Boston on Saturday after
pitching 7 2-3 strong innings with eight strikeouts. In his last
seven starts, the right-hander is 1-4 with a 2.61 ERA, but has
gotten only nine runs to work with.

"You've got too keep battling," said Vazquez, who is 1-0 with a
3.29 ERA in two starts against the Phillies this year.
