AP Baseball Writer

NEW YORK(AP) -- This is what the Yankees envisioned when they
spent $243.5 million on CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett.

One day after Sabathia and the bullpen combined on a
three-hitter, Burnett and two relievers authored a suffocating
one-hitter against the punchless Mets, a 5-0 victory Saturday
night in a runaway Subway Series.

"You can say I was inspired, definitely," Burnett said. "I
thought about his game all last night. And I've told him a
handful of times over the season, 'I can't wait to throw behind
you, Big Man, I can't wait."'

Alex Cora got the Mets' only hit, lining a clean single to
center on a 0-1 curveball leading off the sixth.

"I wanted it down a little more. That was one of those pitches
where as soon as I let it go, I saw him hitting it," Burnett
said. "Before he even hit it, I knew it was going to be a base
hit."

Cora had been 0 for 21 against Burnett (6-4).

"Every time I play against him, he's got great stuff," Cora
said. "I was due, man."

Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada made Citi Field seem small with
opposite-field homers off Tim Redding (1-3). The Yankees,
starting Burnett behind Sabathia for the first time, have won
four of five against the Mets this season, outscoring them
40-15.

"It is what you imagine," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "We
do expect them to pitch at a very high level."

The Mets, who didn't reach base after Cora, have been outscored
14-1 and outhit 22-4 in the first two games of the weekend
series. They made out 1-2-3 in 14 of 18 innings.

"They had great stuff," Ryan Church said. "That's why they get
paid the money they do."

The Mets are playing with center fielder Carlos Beltran,
shortstop Jose Reyes and first baseman Carlos Delgado on the
disabled list.

"We'll need a break here or there or error, something like that
to, you know, amass any type of threat," manager Jerry Manuel
said.

The Yankees have won four of five against their crosstown
rivals, clinching the season series for the first time since
sweeping all six meetings in 2003. In their final meeting this
regular season, Chien-Ming Wang (0-6) starts for the Yankees in
search of his first win since June 15 last year, with the Mets
pitching Livan Hernandez (5-2).

Burnett beat the Mets and Santana 15-0 on June 14 at new Yankee
Stadium, allowing four singles in seven innings. Coming off a
five-game suspension for throwing high and tight to Texas'
Nelson Cruz on June 2, he struck out a season-high 10 in seven
innings and walked three. Brian Bruney and David Robertson each
followed with a perfect inning before 41,302, the second
straight record crowd at Citi Field and just the fourth sellout
there this season.

Cora's single came on the 80th of Burnett's 108 pitches. Girardi
said he probably would have limited Burnett to 115.

"You probably weren't going to make your pitch count anyway, so
don't let that one hit bother you," the manager remembered
telling him. "That's a tough call on a manager when you get in
that situation."

Burnett pitched a no-hitter for Florida against San Diego in
2001 - despite nine walks. He wanted another.

"I was pretty much shooting for it, you know, from probably the
fourth on," he said.

Melky Cabrera preserved this bid with a running, one-handed grab
on the left-field warning track against Daniel Murphy starting
the fifth.

"That's when you start thinking it might happen," Burnett said.
"To have guys out there running around and diving everywhere
makes you go harder."

Just two opposite-field homers were hit in the first 37 games at
Citi Field, by Washington's Nick Johnson (April 24) and Adam
Dunn (May 26). The Yankees had three in two games, starting with
Alex Rodriguez's drive in the eighth inning Friday, the first by
a right-handed batter.

Swisher homered to left-center in the third, and the Yankees
broke it open in the sixth with hits on four consecutive
pitches. Mark Teixeira doubled off the bottom of the wall in
right-center and scored when Rodriguez singled. Robinson Cano
doubled against the base of the fence in the left-field corner,
and Posada finished Redding with a homer to left-center.

After Friday's win, Girardi watched a replay of Sabathia's
effort.

"His stuff looked better to me on TV than it actually did in
person," he said. "I might tune in on A.J. when I get home, as
well, because I guess I can't get enough of good pitching."

NOTES: Eleven of Swisher's 14 homers have come on the road. ...
The Yankees' previous one-hitter also was against the Mets, by
Mike Mussina, Ron Villone, Scott Proctor, Kyle Farnsworth and
Mariano Rivera on June 30, 2006.

Yankees-Mets Preview

By SANTOSH VENKATARAMAN
STATS Senior Writer

New York (40-32) at New York (37-34), 7:10 p.m. EDT

The New York Yankees have already taken advantage of shoddy New
York Mets' defense for two wins over their Subway Series rivals
this year.

The Yankees look to capture the season series from the
error-prone Mets as they hope to have captain Derek Jeter in the
lineup Saturday night when their three-game set at Citi Field
continues.

The Mets (37-35) have paid the price for defensive miscues
against the Yankees twice this year. The more notable instance
was their 9-8 loss at the new Yankee Stadium on June 12 when
second baseman Luis Castillo dropped a popup with two outs in
the bottom of the ninth inning that allowed the Yankees to score
two runs to win the game.

In Friday's 9-1 loss, the Mets committed three errors in the
second inning that helped contribute to four runs for the
Yankees. Third baseman David Wright and shortstop Alex Cora each
had throwing errors while first baseman Nick Evans flubbed a
grounder in the Mets' first three-error inning since May 20,
2004.

"We played a bad game. It was just one of those nights," Mets
manager Jerry Manuel said. "I think probably some of it is due
because of the amount of players that we have missing."

Jeter, who turned 35 on Friday, was scratched after batting
practice because of a bad cough. He had four hits and scored
four runs in his last game Thursday - an 11-7 win at Atlanta.

"With a respiratory problem, you worry about them, you know,
getting winded and that sort of thing," Yankees manager Joe
Girardi said before he pulled Jeter from the lineup.

Alex Rodriguez moved into 11th place on the all-time homers list
with his 564th on Friday, and Brett Gardner added a career-high
five hits as the Yankees won their third straight and improved
to 3-1 against the Mets.

The injury-plagued Mets welcomed Gary Sheffield back to the
lineup Friday after he missed a four-game series against St.
Louis this week due to his right knee problems. The nine-time
All-Star homered in the fifth inning.

Yankees starter A.J. Burnett (5-4, 4.24 ERA) will try to defeat
the Mets for the second time this season. He yielded four
singles over seven innings June 14 in a 15-0 victory to improve
to 3-6 with a 3.58 ERA in 17 career starts against the Mets.

The right-hander fell to 1-2 with a 2.79 ERA in three
interleague starts after losing 2-1 last Saturday in Florida.
Burnett gave up two runs over 6 1-3 innings.

The Mets may not want to start Cora since he is 0 for 19 with
seven strikeouts in his career versus Burnett while Wright is 3
for 15 with seven strikeouts.

Tim Redding (1-2, 6.08) gets the ball for the Mets after earning
his first win his last time out. He gave up four runs over seven
innings Monday against St. Louis in a 6-4 victory.

The veteran right-hander is winless in his last seven
interleague starts, going 0-2 with a 5.89 ERA. He is 0-1 with a
9.00 ERA in two outings versus the AL this year, and will face
the Yankees for the first time.

Yankees slugger Mark Teixeira has four doubles and three walks
in nine career at-bats against Redding.
