Sounders dash FC Dallas' playoff hopes, 2-1

SEATTLE (STATS) - Even before their regular season finale, the
Seattle Sounders had become the first MLS expansion team since
the 1998 Chicago Fire to make the playoffs. In their finale,
they dashed FC Dallas' postseason hopes.

Brad Evans, who had an earlier goal nullified by an offsides
call, scored the game-winner in the 84th minute, rallying the
Sounders past Dallas 2-1.

Dallas (11-13-6) had surged back into contention following a
1-7-3 start, but was finally eliminated with Saturday's loss.

"Unfortunately, we had a rough start, but (later), we were
playing about as well as anyone in the league," Dallas coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "This was one of those games where we
never got our rhythm into play. It was a game that was going to
change at any moment, whether it was officiating or a slippage
or a diagonal ball."

The victory was the 125th for Seattle coach Sigi Schmid, moving
him past current US national team coach Bob Bradley for the most
in MLS history. However, Schmid knows those regular season wins
don't mean much now.

"There have been a lot of great coaches in this league, and to
have won more games than any of them fills me with a lot of
humbleness and a lot of honor and pride," Schmid said. "But my
favorite record is most wins in the playoffs (19), and that's
one that I want to build on."

The Sounders (12-7-11), now second in the Western Conference,
will give Schmid that chance. Who they face in the two-leg
first-round depends on the outcome of Sunday's finale between
Houston and Chivas USA at Carson, Calif. Those two teams are
currently tied for third in the West at 45 points apiece.

Nate Jaqua also scored for Seattle, with his goal at the start
of the 62nd minute ending a 375-minute home scoreless streak for
the Sounders that stretched back to a 2-1 victory against
Houston on July 11.

"It was definitely good to get back on the board at home," said
Jaqua, who netted the game-winner in last Saturday's 3-2 victory
at Kansas City. "We were playing well and creating chances. We
just weren't tucking them in the back of the net."

Jaqua also started the play that led to Evans' winning goal with
a pass down the left wing to Freddie Ljungberg. Ljungberg lofted
a pass into the penalty area that dropped right onto the shoe
top of Evans, who flicked it across the goalmouth, out of the
reach of Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala and into the far right
corner.

Atiba Harris turned a quick run down the right wing into his
fifth goal of the season - and Dallas' only goal of the night.
Harris took a pass from Daniel Hernandez, went toward the upper
corner of the penalty area, and sent his shot past goalkeeper
Kasey Keller into the back left corner early in the 14th minute.

Although Dallas forward Jeff Cunningham went scoreless Saturday,
he effectively clinched the league's Golden Boot award as the
top goal scorer. Cunningham finished with 17 goals - one more
than Colorado's Conor Casey, who failed to score in the Rapids'
3-0 loss at Real Salt Lake. No other MLS player has more than 12
goals.

FC Dallas-Sounders Preview

By JEFF MEZYDLO
STATS Senior Writer

FC Dallas (11-12-6) at Seattle (11-7-11), 10:30 p.m. EDT

Seattle Sounders FC has already secured a playoff berth in its
inaugural season. FC Dallas' postseason hopes, however, have
come down to the final weekend.

Dallas looks to continue a late-season surge and keep its
playoff chances alive with a fifth consecutive victory Saturday
night on the road against the surprising Sounders.

After missing the playoffs for the first time in four seasons a
year ago, Dallas (11-12-6) has done all it could over the last
month to make sure that won't happen again. Defenders George
John and Ugo Ihemelu scored as the club won for the fifth time
in six matches, 2-1 over Colorado last Saturday.

Dallas is in a four-way tie with Toronto FC, New England and
D.C. for the eighth and final playoff spot - one point behind
seventh-place Colorado. Though two postseason berths remain,
Dallas faces a must-win situation and needs the right
combinations of other matches to go its way in order to keep
playing after Saturday.

"We don't even talk about it," coach Schellas Hyndman said.
"It's too complicated and we need to win a game before we can
dream about anything else."

Though Jeff Cunningham didn't find the back of the net last week
after scoring 16 of his league-leading 17 goals over a 13-game
stretch, Dave van den Bergh recorded his 11th assist for Dallas,
which has outscored its opponents 8-2 during a four-game winning
streak.

"Week after week, we've just been fighting and playing our style
of soccer," Ihemelu said. "This is the way we want to keep going
into the next game and hopefully into the playoffs."

That might not be easy against upstart Seattle (11-7-11), which
beat Kansas City 3-2 last Saturday to join the 1998 Chicago Fire
as the only clubs to clinch a playoff berth during their
expansion seasons.

The Fire's improbable run culminated by winning the MLS Cup,
something Seattle coach Sigi Schmid knows would be a tall order.
The Sounders should be motivated since next month's title match
will be played on their home pitch at Qwest Field.

"The scenario was different when Chicago did it because the
league was a lot younger," Schmid told MLS' official Web site as
he prepares to guide his third different team to the playoffs
after coaching Los Angeles (2002) and Columbus (2008) to MLS
championships.

"I'm proud of our team, and I'm proud of what we've
accomplished. I still think we can play better soccer, but
that's just me."

The Sounders can also earn the top spot in the Western
Conference. Though in fourth place, Seattle is one point behind
West leaders Los Angeles, Houston and CD Chivas USA.

"The sky's the limit with this team," said forward Nate Jaqua,
who scored his eighth goal of the season against Kansas City.
"You know we're going to go in there and fight every time we
play."

Tyrone Marshall had a goal with an assist, Freddie Ljungberg
added two assists and Roger Levesque scored for the second
consecutive match to help Seattle win its second straight last
week.

Jaqua assisted on Jhon Kennedy Hurtado's goal when Seattle and
Dallas played to a 1-all draw May 16 at Pizza Hut Park.

FC Dallas keeps playoff hopes alive

By JOHN TRANCHINA
STATS MLS Correspondent

FRISCO, Texas (STATS) - FC Dallas desperately needed a victory
to keep its slim playoff hopes alive and it took a goal from a
highly unlikely source to secure it.

Defender Ugo Ihemelu scored in the 66th minute and FC Dallas
beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 on Saturday night to keep its
playoff hopes alive.

With its fifth win in six games, Dallas (11-12-6) has 39 points
to tie Toronto, New England and DC United for the final playoff
spot in MLS .

"I thought it was a really pressure game," Dallas coach Schellas
Hyndman said. "It was a game that we went in and desperately
needed to win, so the focus was to play to our best.

Colorado (10-9-10) remained in playoff position, but is 0-2-4 in
its last six and 0-5-4 on the road since May 30.

"I thought Dallas played extremely well and the only saving
grace for us is that we didn't get embarrassed," Rapids coach
Gary Smith said. "They forced the issue, they made the game
quick. They really took control of the game and really played
the way they wanted to and deservedly won the game."

Ihemelu, who joined Dallas after a trade from Colorado on Aug.
31, scored his first goal of the season and just the second of
his MLS career - in his 123rd game - to put Dallas up 2-0.

"From how the whole team performed, you could tell we really
wanted to win this game, we're really fighting to make the
playoffs," Ihemelu said. "We created tons of chances and I
think we did a good job of eliminating theirs.

"Week after week, we've just been fighting and playing our style
of soccer. This is the way we want to keep going into the next
game and hopefully into the playoffs."

Coming off a free kick by Dax McCarty from about 35 yards, Atiba
Harris headed the ball toward Ihemelu as he charged the left
post. Ihemelu managed to get his right foot on the ball, which
then bounced off goalkeeper Preston Burpo, off the post and just
over the goal line.

"I was trying to cover back post and the ball bounced to me,"
Ihemelu said. "If you knew what went through my head, 'Don't
miss this, don't miss this, don't miss this.' I didn't want to
over hit it, I just tried to tap it on goal and it just went in.
I'll take it."

Pat Noonan notched his second goal of the year in the 71st
minute to pull the Rapids back within one. After making a deft
move to slip past Ihemelu, Noonan boomed a shot from just inside
the penalty area that beat Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala just
inside the left post.

Despite thoroughly dominating the action almost all night,
missing on several glorious opportunities, Dallas still had to
sweat out the final minutes.

"They made numerous opportunities to extend their lead and
really gave us a little bit of a lifeline by not doing that,"
Smith said.

FC Dallas controlled the early portion of the match, taking the
lead in just the fourth minute on rookie defender George John's
first MLS goal. This goal was also set up by a free kick, as
Dave van den Bergh lofted the ball from just outside the penalty
area into the middle and John leapt up and headed it past Burpo.

"When you look at the number of opportunities we had to put
balls into the goal, and we didn't - we kind of made it a little
bit hard on ourselves, but we can't complain too much about
winning," Hyndman said.

Van den Bergh's assist was his 11th, second in the MLS to
Colorado's Omar Cummings.

Rapids-FC Dallas Preview

By ANTHONY GIORNALISTA
STATS Senior Writer

Colorado (10-8-10) at FC Dallas (10-12-6), 8:30 p.m. EDT

A surprisingly strong performance by Conor Casey got the U.S.
national team into the World Cup. The Colorado Rapids,
meanwhile, have come to expect outstanding play from Casey as
they try to stay in playoff position.

Following what was perhaps the best match of his career, Casey
looks to help the Rapids continue their postseason push in a
matchup with Jeff Cunningham and FC Dallas on Saturday night.

Casey scored his first two international goals in his 15th game
with the national team last Saturday night, helping the U.S.
secure a trip to the 2010 World Cup with a 3-2 victory over
Honduras. It was a dramatic win for the United States, which was
running out of chances.

Plagued by injuries that have required surgery on both knees,
Casey has been in and out of national team duty. Coach Bob
Bradley made a somewhat unexpected move by starting him over
Jozy Altidore last weekend.

While Casey hasn't thrived consistently with the national team,
the Rapids (10-8-10) can credit his clutch play for keeping them
in playoff contention. Colorado has played to four consecutive
draws, with Casey scoring the game-tying goals off penalty kicks
in three of those matches.

"I never get tired of it - being in those situations," said
Casey, whose penalty kick in the 58th minute gave Colorado a 1-1
tie with New England in its last match Oct. 3. "It would be nice
for us to create some goals in regular play and not have to rely
on PKs for the rest of the season."

The Rapids head into this weekend two points ahead of the
Revolution, who are holding on to the last of four wild-card
spots. Dallas (10-12-6) trails New England by two points.

Dallas has won three straight and four of five, including a 2-1
victory at San Jose on Oct. 7.

Cunningham has scored 16 goals in his last 13 games and four in
his last five contests to help Dallas make a late-season run at
the playoffs. The former Rapid leads MLS with 17 goals, one more
than Casey. No other player has more than 12.

After Kenny Cooper departed for Germany on July 31, Cunningham
has teamed with David Ferreira (eight goals and seven assists)
to lead Dallas offensively.

"When he was given the opportunity to be ... the
difference-maker, he really stepped up," Dallas coach Schellas
Hyndman said. "But you also have to identify what a great job
David Ferreira has also done. The two of them have really been
on the same page."

Cunningham and Ferreira will face a Rapids team that might have
Matt Pickens back in goal. Pickens has missed five straight
games with a sprained knee, but he isn't listed on this week's
injury report.

Pickens has seven shutouts and a 1.16 goals-against average in
19 games. Preston Burpo, who has started in Pickens' absence,
hasn't won since a 3-2 victory at Los Angeles on April 4.

Pickens started for Colorado in a 1-0 win over Dallas on July
11. The Rapids are 3-0-2 against Dallas after losing the
previous six meetings.

Cunningham's late goal boosts Dallas' playoff push

By GEOFF LEPPER
STATS MLS Correspondent

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (STATS) - FC Dallas forward Jeff Cunningham
knew what a tie Wednesday night would have meant to his team's
fragile playoff hopes.

"It would have been done," Cunningham said. "The season would
have been over."

Instead, thanks to Cunningham and his MLS-leading 17th goal,
Dallas' late-season surge continued.

Cunningham assisted on David Ferreira's 49th-minute score, then
put Dallas ahead for good in the 82nd minute of a 2-1 victory
against the San Jose Earthquakes.

With a fourth win in its last five matches, Dallas (10-12-6)
moved past idle Real Salt Lake and Toronto FC in the standings.
Dallas is now two points off the pace for final playoff berth
and has two remaining matches, both against higher-ranked teams
it hopes to pass - Colorado and Seattle.

"We still have a little bit of breath in us to dream about a
playoff opportunity," Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said. "I
wouldn't want to be the team that plays FC Dallas if we're in
the playoffs."

San Jose rookie Quincy Amarikwa scored his first MLS goal in the
73rd minute to force a tie, and the match featured end-to-end
action thereafter. Dallas threw waves of players forward in
search of the go-ahead score, and once they had it, the
Earthquakes (7-13-7) responded in kind.

San Jose put all 11 men in the box for an injury-time corner
kick from Shea Salinas. His high cross found the head of San
Jose goalkeeper Joe Cannon just as his opposite number, Dallas'
Dario Sala, tried in vain to punch the ball away. But Dallas
defender Jair Benitez cleared Cannon's attempt off the line to
preserve the win.

"(Benitez) is a good player you don't really take notice of,"
Cunningham said. "Tonight, you see his importance on the end
line for us."

Cunningham, who has scored five times in Dallas' last four
matches to pass Colorado's Conor Casey for the league lead,
enjoyed one of his easiest goals of this season Wednesday. He
slotted the ball into an empty net after Dax McCarty - set free
for a 2-on-1 break by a nice pass from Ferreira - slid the ball
past a charging Cannon.

The Cunningham-Ferreira connection had worked in the other
direction to put Dallas ahead early in the second half. Heath
Pearce's pass was redirected from Cunningham to the feet of
Ferreira, who dribbled past Cannon and scored with ease.

"The two of them have really been on the same page," Hyndman
said.

Cunningham was turned away twice in the first half. In the ninth
minute, he got behind the Earthquakes defense and rolled a shot
past Cannon, but San Jose defender Brandon McDonald swept the
ball off the line to save the goal. McDonald came up big again a
minute later, blocking a Cunningham drive from inside the
penalty box.

San Jose took control for the final 15 minutes of the first half
and forced Sala to make two reaction saves. Sala used a
right-footed kick save to turn aside a strong volley from
Salinas in the 39th minute, then two minutes later got his lower
body in the way of a flying header from Chris Wondolowski.

Sala made another critical stop in the second half, sprawling to
his left in the 53rd minute to deflect a low shot stung from the
top of the penalty box by a wide-open Antonio Ribeiro.

The last-place Earthquakes were officially eliminated from
playoff contention with the defeat.

Dallas, meanwhile, fights on.

"We're playing hard, playing for each other," Cunningham said.
"We still have the belief."

FC Dallas (9-12-6) at San Jose (7-12-7), 10:00 p.m. EDT

The San Jose Earthquakes and FC Dallas will likely miss the
playoffs, but they are playing better as the season winds down.

The worst teams in the Western Conference will both be looking
for a third straight win Wednesday night when they meet for the
second time this season.

San Jose (7-12-7) and FC Dallas (9-12-6) are on the verge of
being eliminated from postseason contention, but there appears
to be hope for the future.

The Earthquakes are unbeaten in their last four matches (2-0-2)
and won their second straight Wednesday, 1-0 over New York. Ryan
Johnson converted a first-half penalty kick and goalkeeper Joe
Cannon recorded his third shutout in San Jose's last nine
matches.

"At the beginning of this season, we were very, very easy to
play against," coach Frank Yallop said. "We have moved people on
and moved people out that I think weren't maybe up to the task
of playing the way I want to play it."

Johnson has scored in back-to-back games and has a team-high 10
goals to tie for seventh in the league. San Jose has scored 32 -
the lowest total in the West - and has the second-lowest point
total in the league with 28.

"The table doesn't lie; we haven't got enough points to make the
playoffs," Yallop said. "What I am pleased with is we've not
rolled over and died in the season. That's an important
character thing to have for next season. We're keeping this team
together as much as we can."

FC Dallas also is not rolling over after a 1-0 win at New
England last Wednesday. Jeff Cunningham scored for the fifth
straight match and is tied with Colorado's Conor Casey for the
league lead with 16 goals.

FC Dallas is 12th in the playoff standings with 33 points, and
the top eight qualify. Eighth-place New England has 38.

"We still have games we can win and we still have a chance to
get in," Dallas defender Ugo Ihemelu said. "We just have to keep
playing our game."

FC Dallas has allowed 43 goals - tied with San Jose for
second-most in the league - but now has a chance to record three
consecutive shutouts for the first time this season.

"For us to get a 1-0 win, that doesn't happen," Dallas coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "Our defense always lets us down at the
most inappropriate times, but this is a step in the right
direction."

Dallas forward Dave van den Bergh, who has a team-best 10
assists, left in the 26th minute because of a right ankle
injury. His status is unknown.

The teams played to a 2-2 draw June 7 as Kenny Cooper, who had
been with Dallas but has since moved on to play in Germany,
scored the tying goal in the 87th minute.

By AMIT KALUSKAR

DALLAS (STATS)- Maybe it took a new setting for FC Dallas to
finally get a breakthrough defensive performance, but a
71st-minute goal from Jeff Cunningham and a defense that allowed
only two shots on goal led to a 1-0 win over the New England
Revolution on Wednesday night.

"For us to get a 1-0 win that doesn't happen," Dallas coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "Our defense always lets us down at the
most inappropriate times, but this is a step in the right
direction."

The game played at the Cotton Bowl was the first match of a
doubleheader, with the second game an international friendly
between Mexico and Columbia. FC Dallas played at the Cotton Bowl
from 1996-2002 and 2004-2005 before moving to Pizza Hut Park in
August 2005.

FC Dallas entered the game with 43 goals allowed, tied for
second-most in the MLS, but has posted consecutive shutouts for
the second time this season. Dallas also blanked Kansas City and
Houston on Aug. 1 and Aug. 6, respectively.

"We struggled tonight," New England's Sainey Nyassi said. "They
dominated us at midfield."

New England (10-9-7) remained on 37 points, good for third in
the Eastern Conference and eighth in the MLS. The top two teams
in each conference qualify for the playoffs and the next four
teams with the highest overall point totals receive wild-card
berths.

The Revolution are 1-3-1 in their last five matches and
struggled without playmaking midfielder Steve Ralston, who
sustained a season-ending knee injury Saturday against Seattle
FC.

"Tonight we didn't create any chances," Revolution forward Kheli
Dube said. " It's going to be hard to get goals (with Ralston
out)."

FC Dallas (9-12-6) - currently 12th overall - still has an
outside chance at the playoffs with 33 points and three matches
remaining.

"We still have games we can win and we still have a chance to
get in," Dallas defender Ugo Ihemelu said. "We just have to keep
playing our game."

Cunningham scored his MLS-leading 16th goal, which puts him one
ahead of Colorado's Conor Casey. Atiba Harris started the
scoring sequence with a cross to Jair Benitez, who directed the
ball to Cunningham. The striker then headed a shot into the left
corner of the net from the top of the 6-yard box.

"I'm not known to score too many with my head," Cunningham said
of the goal. "It was a good cross and I re-directed into the
net."

Dallas forward Dave van den Bergh, who has a team-best 10
assists, left in the 26th minute because of a right ankle
injury.

"I felt like this was a playoff type game," Cunningham said.
"Their defenders were organized and didn't give many chances.
There weren't many good looks for both teams."

saves while FC Dallas goalie Dario Sala made two.

New England (10-8-7) at FC Dallas (8-12-6), 7:00 p.m. EDT

Facing FC Dallas would appear to be a great chance for the New
England Revolution to improve their position in the tightly
packed playoff race. Overcoming the loss of Steve Ralston to a
season-ending knee injury might be a stiffer task.

The Revolution will try to continue their dominance of Dallas on
Wednesday night when they play the first of two road games in
four days.

New England (10-8-7) holds the eighth and final playoff
position, one point ahead of D.C. and two behind the sixth-place
tie between Chivas USA and Seattle, which trail fourth-place
Colorado by one point. The Revs visit the Rapids on Saturday and
hold two games in hand on them and the Sounders.

The Revolution have a good opportunity to move atop that crowd
after rallying for a 2-1 win over Seattle behind two second-half
goals by midfielder Shalrie Joseph on Saturday.

"We knew we needed to get three points because we're going to
have a tough game in Colorado and in Dallas, and we have to take
care of business," said Joseph, who leads the team with career
highs of eight goals and eight assists. "No matter where we play
right now, we know that the playoff picture is coming around and
we need points no matter where we go."

Those points may be harder to come by after New England learned
it will be without Ralston, the league's all-time leader in
games played (378) and assists (135).

The 35-year-old midfielder tore the ACL in his right knee in the
19th minute Saturday. Ralston, second on the team with seven
goals and seven assists, came down awkwardly while going for a
ball.

The Revs, though, have thoroughly dominated Dallas (8-12-6),
going 10-1-1 dating to a 2-1 loss Aug. 2, 2000. They've won the
last six meetings by an 11-4 margin, not including a 2007
victory in U.S. Open Cup play.

The Revolution haven't lost to FCD since a 4-0 defeat at Pizza
Hut Park on May 20, 2006, and are 22-9-1 in the all-time series
with an 11-4-1 road mark.

Ralston scored the eventual winner with 10 minutes to play in
the last meeting, a 2-1 home victory April 4.

Dallas still has faint playoff hopes after winning two of three,
but it's seven points back of New England with four games to
play.

"Let's see where we can take this thing. Crazier things have
happened in soccer," midfielder Dave van den Bergh told the
team's official Web site. "The best thing about those last four
games is we have nothing to lose. We can take it game-by-game.
We don't even have control over our own destiny any more. So all
we can do is play well, play hard and take it game-by-game."

Dallas' resurgence has been helped by improved play at home,
where it's 5-0-1 after a 1-3-3 stretch.

The club won at home again Saturday, beating Salt Lake 3-0 as
Jeff Cunningham scored twice and van den Bergh notched two
assists.

Cunningham has 12 goals in his past nine games, including six in
the last four. That surge has moved the Jamaican forward into a
tie with the Rapids' Conor Casey for the league lead at 15.

Cunningham's 119 career goals rank him second all-time in MLS.

FRISCO, Texas(AP) -- Jeff Cunninghamhad his fourth multigoal game
of the season to lead FC Dallas to a 3-0 win over Real Salt Lake
on Saturday night.

Real (9-11-7) has lost consecutive games and is three points
behind New England for the final wild-card spot with three
matches remaining.

In the fifth minute, Cunningham took a pass from Dave van den
Bergh inside the penalty area and fired a half-volley into the
right corner of the net from 12 yards.

Van den Bergh then sent a through ball from outside the penalty
box for David Ferreira, who raced past Real Salt Lake defender
Nat Borchers and ripped a shot from close range into the left
corner to make it 2-0 in the 10th minute.

Cunningham capped the scoring in the 87th minute with a
right-footed blast from the top of the penalty circle for his
15th goal, tying him with Colorado forward Conor Casey for the
MLS lead.

Van den Bergh's two assists gave him a career-high 10, while
Ferreira also tallied assists on both of Cunningham's goals.

FC Dallas (8-12-6) is now 7-0 all-time at home against Salt
Lake. FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala finished with a
season-high six saves, including a diving stop in the 41st
minute on a point-blank shot by Salt Lake defender Pablo Campos
from inside the 6-yard box. FC Dallas captain Pablo Ricchetti
was benched for this match and not listed among the 18 players

By MATT BEARDMORE

Real Salt Lake (9-10-7) at FC Dallas (7-12-6), 8:30 p.m. EDT

FC Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman is pleased his team leads the
league in goals scored, but he'd be far more satisfied if it
wasn't giving up the most.

Dallas looks to improve to 7-0-0 all-time at home against Real
Salt Lake on Saturday night when the Western Conference foes
square off.

After taking a 2-1 lead over Kansas City on Jeff Cunningham's
second-half goal last Saturday, Dallas (7-12-6) allowed two
scores in the final 13 minutes and lost 3-2.

FC Dallas, which leads MLS with 41 goals, is averaging 3.0 in
its last four matches. Hyndman's club, though, is 1-2-1 during
this stretch.

"The difficult part for us is to recognize that we've scored
more goals than anyone in the league, but we're tied for last
(with New York) by giving up 43," he told Dallas' official Web
site. "You can't say we're not a good team or a decent team. We
lead the league in goals but we also give up the goals."

FC Dallas has a league-worst 5-3-2 record when leading at the
half. One of those defeats came in Salt Lake on July 24, when
Dallas led 2-0 at halftime but lost 4-2.

RSL, however, has lost all six games it has played in Dallas,
including a 2-1 defeat in its last match at Pizza Hut Park on
May 24, 2008.

Salt Lake's comeback win in the only meeting this season
consisted of Yura Movsisyan getting two goals, Robbie Findley
scoring on a penalty kick and Dallas midfielder Daniel Torres
having an own goal.

RSL (9-10-7) nearly made another remarkable comeback in its last
match - Saturday's 3-2 loss at Houston.

Salt Lake trailed the West-leading Dynamo 2-0 after five minutes
and was a man down after the 32nd minute when defender Jamison
Olave was sent off with a red card. RSL made it 2-all in the
60th minute on Movsisyan's seventh goal of the season but
allowed a goal in the 81st minute, snapping its three-match
unbeaten streak.

"We came into a tough place to play against one of the best
teams in the league, and you always want to get a point, but I
think it shows a lot of character what we did tonight, and it
gives us some confidence heading into our next couple games,"
said Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando. "Obviously, we
wanted at least a point and three points would have been great,
but we have four games left. That leaves 12 points for us to
get."

RSL trails Chivas USA by three points for fifth in the West but
is 2-9-2 on the road this season.

Dallas is 5-0-1 in its last five home games.

Cunningham, who had an assist and missed a second-half penalty
kick against RSL on July 24, has 12 goals and four assists in
his last 10 games.

Playing for RSL from 2006-07, Cunningham had 18 goals. He led
MLS with 16 in 2006.

Conrad's late goal lifts Wizards past FC Dallas

By STEVE BRISENDINE
STATS MLS Correspondent

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (STATS) - The redemption of Jimmy Conrad was
not a pretty thing: An awkward sprawl - a crawl, really - on the
grass of Community America Ballpark.

Think he minded?

Not after his 80th-minute header atoned for two earlier
defensive mistakes and gave the Kansas City Wizards their first
home victory since mid-June.

"I was doing the army crawl before it went in, just to make sure
I didn't miss it," Conrad said after scoring the game-winner in
Saturday night's 3-2 win over FC Dallas. "I think if you look in
the dictionary for the sequence from goat to hero, that's pretty
much me right now."

Conrad's goal capped a late flurry for Kansas City (8-11-6),
which trailed 2-1 after 75 minutes. Josh Wolff tied it in the
77th and Conrad's goal three minutes later gave the Wizards
their first home victory since a 3-1 win over New England on
June 12. Dallas (7-12-6) has won just once in its last five
games.

"You lose focus," Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said of his
team's late collapse "You're holding on, you get tight, and a
team gets belief to get momentum."

Santiago Hirsig scored his first MLS goal in the ninth minute -
and Kansas City's first at home since a 1-all draw against Los
Angeles on July 25 - putting the Wizards up 1-0 with a header
off Claudio Lopez's corner kick. The lead didn't hold, as
Dallas' Dax McCarty and Jeff Cunningham each turned a mistake by
Conrad into a goal.

McCarty scored in the 44th minute picking off Conrad's errant
pass 25 yards from goal, making a short run and firing a low
shot past Kevin Hartman from 20 yards.

In the 54th minute, David Ferreira stripped Conrad of the ball
and drew Hartman to his right before slotting a pass to a
wide-open Cunningham making a run up the middle.

"We had to win this game for our season to continue," Conrad
said. "So I had the weight of the world on my shoulders there
for a little while. There were no defensive mistakes tonight.
There were just the two mistakes by me that led to two goals.

"It's easy to brush it off now, but we still have video to
watch," he added with a laugh. "That's Tuesday. I can't wait for
that."

Wolff, who has four goals in Kansas City's last four games and
10 this season - matching his career high from 1999, 2004 and
2005 - deflected second-half sub Zoltan Hercegfalvi's shot just
inside the post to make it 2-2. Not long after that, Conrad took
advantage of a mistake by Dallas' back line.

George John tried to head Lopez's corner kick away from the
goal, but instead sent it looping toward Dallas keeper Dario
Sala. Sala barely kept the ball from going in for an own goal,
but it fell right in front of Conrad.

"We didn't have any breaks on our side," Sala said. "We've been
suffering the whole year."

FC Dallas (7-11-6) at Kansas City (7-11-6), 8:30 p.m. EDT

FC Dallas had a record-setting performance in its last match
with Kansas City. That is exactly why it won't look past the
Wizards this time.

Dallas tries to improve its slim playoff hopes Saturday night at
CommunityAmerica Ballpark, where it faces a Wizards club coming
off a successful stretch on the road.

With then-leading scorer Kenny Cooper transferred to 1860 Munich
in Germany the previous day, Dallas' Jeff Cunningham scored a
career-high four goals and David Arturo Rico Ferreira found the
back of the net twice in a 6-0 victory over visiting Kansas City
on Aug. 1.

Dallas (7-11-6) tied the franchise record for goals in a game
and posted its largest-ever margin of victory.

"We embarrassed them ... and professional athletes don't forget
that," coach Schellas Hyndman told the team's official Web site.
"They will be at their best (on Saturday)."

Cunningham looks to continue his scoring surge against the
Wizards (7-11-6) after notching two goals and two assists in a
6-3 win at Los Angeles on Saturday. Cunningham is second in MLS
with 12 goals, trailing Colorado's Conor Casey by one.

"There was just not enough speed to cover Jeff Cunningham," said
Hyndman, whose club trails sixth-place Real Salt Lake by seven
points in the Western Conference.

Cunningham earned player of the week honors for the third time
and moved past Ante Razov for second place on the career goals
list with 116.

Cunningham has 19 multi-goal games, third-most all-time behind
Razov (22) and the Galaxy's Landon Donovan (21).

Kansas City's Kevin Hartman didn't have much success against
Cunningham in the clubs' last matchup, but he remains one of the
league's most consistent goalkeepers.

Hartman stopped five shots in a 1-0 victory over New York on
Saturday for his 83rd shutout, most in MLS history. He also tops
the league's career wins list with 145.

Josh Wolff scored in the 10th minute for the Wizards, who went
2-0-1 during their road stretch.

"We had so many opportunities we missed earlier in the year,"
Hartman said. "But I think this week (three road games in eight
days) was a step in the right direction. We got two wins and we
now go back home and have to keep playing well."

Kansas City, though, was shut out in three of its last four home
games.

The Wizards acquired Kei Kamara from Houston on Tuesday. The
forward scored his first goal of the season in the Dynamo's 1-0
victory over Dallas on May 9. He has five goals in 2009.

"We know the type of speed that he has," Hyndman said. "They'll
be a better team with him."

CARSON, Calif. (STATS) - Jeff Cunningham embodied the speed that
FC Dallas used to devastate the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Cunningham had two goals and two assists to lead FC Dallas to a
6-3 rout of the Galaxy on Saturday night.

FC Dallas (7-11-6) broke a three-game winless streak and denied
the Galaxy (9-5-11) a chance to move into first place in Major
League Soccer's Western Conference.

Cunningham increased his career total to 116 goals and his
seasonal output to 12, putting him one behind Colorado's Conor
Casey for the MLS lead.

"There was just not enough speed to cover Jeff Cunningham,"
Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman said. "I think the guy is 32-years
old, going on 33. But if you've ever seen him, he looks like
he's probably 25, 26. He's very, very healthy and strong."

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena, whose team set a club record for most
goals allowed in one game, agreed.

"If we get in track meets with teams, we're not going to win a
lot of the races," said Arena, whose team had a 306-minute
shutout streak entering the match. "We were awful from the
opening kickoff. We deserved everything we got."

Dallas also made a lineup change to take control in the second
half.

Defender Daniel Hernandez replaced forward Marvin Chavez in the
46th minute "to sit in front of the defense," said Hyndman, who
added he also asked midfielder Dax McCarty to mark the Galaxy's
David Beckham closely.

"That helped us a lot," Hyndman said. "The quality passes
weren't penetrating like they were in the first half."

Cunningham and McCarty combined to break a 2-all tie in the 71st
minute. Cunningham beat defender Gregg Berhalter along the left
side before passing to McCarty, who scored from four yards.

Dallas then scored three times in a four-minute span to put away
the game. Atiba Harris converted a 4-yard header in the 82nd,
and Cunningham passed to David Ferreira for an 8-yard shot one
minute later.

Cunningham then scored on a 19-yard shot inside the left post in
the 86th minute.

Dallas took a 2-0 lead in the first 25 minutes. Dave van den
Bergh converted a 21-yard free kick in the eighth minute, then
Cunningham scored off Harris' right-wing cross from 13 yards
inside the right post in the 25th minute.

The Galaxy narrowed the deficit to 2-1 in the 26th minute on an
own goal from Dallas defender Jair Benitez. A.J. De La Garza
tied the match at 2 in the 42nd minute with his first MLS goal.

"As I said at halftime," Hyndman said, "there are going to be
more goals."

The Galaxy's Edson Buddle ended the scoring in the 90th minute.

Los Angeles forward Landon Donovan clipped Ferreira seconds
before the final whistle to start a shoving match between
players from both teams.

FC Dallas (6-11-6) at Los Angeles (9-4-11), 10:30 p.m. EDT

While they have one of MLS' top scorers and one of the most
prominent players in the world, it's the Los Angeles Galaxy's
defense that has been most impressive recently.

Following a third consecutive shutout, the Galaxy look to extend
their unbeaten streak Saturday when they host FC Dallas.

Los Angeles (9-4-11) resumes play for the first time in two
weeks, looking to move past Houston for the Supporters' Shield
lead. The Galaxy, who began the season with one win in their
first 11 games, are 7-1-2 since late June, winning two of their
last three while not allowing a goal in those matches.

David Beckham provided the only offense in a 1-0 win over Chivas
USA on Aug. 29, scoring his first goal since rejoining the
Galaxy on July 16. Donovan Ricketts didn't see much action,
meanwhile, facing three shots on goal. Ricketts has needed to
make six saves to preserve the three shutouts.

"It's always good to keep a clean sheet, it gives the team
confidence," he said, "and it gives us a foundation. So, it is
always good."

Ricketts has helped the Galaxy cope with a bit of an offensive
slump. Los Angeles has scored three goals in three games and is
one of the Western Conference's lowest-scoring teams despite
having received 10 goals from Landon Donovan.

Donovan has been moved from striker to midfield with the return
of Beckham, playing in his seventh game since returning from AC
Milan.

While the Galaxy are looking to Donovan and Beckham to help
provide a little more breathing room for Ricketts, coach Bruce
Arena has no complaints about the low-scoring affairs.

"To make a real team, you have to win games 1-0," he said. "I
was a part of a 5-4 game when I was with the New York Red Bulls
and it was maybe one of the worst games I've ever been a part
of. ... We have to learn to play in games like this and we
have."

Dallas (6-11-6), in second-to-last place in the West, is winless
in its last three. After losing to Columbus and New York, the
club played to a disappointing 2-all draw against D.C. last
Saturday.

United rallied from two deficits and scored on a penalty kick in
the 58th minute after defender Daniel Torres was issued a red
card for supposedly taking down a D.C. player in the penalty
area. Replays showed he never touched the player.

The loss soured what was a big game for Jeff Cunningham, who
moved into a tie with Ante Razov for second place on the
league's all-time goal list with 114.

"I still haven't thought much about that," he told Dallas'
official Web site. "There is still much disappointment. The game
is still fresh in my mind."

Looking to improve on one of the conference's worst scoring
defenses, Dallas signed U.S. national team defender Heath Pearce
on Friday after he spent two seasons with Hansa Rostock in
Germany.

The 25-year-old from Modesto, Calif., has made 28 appearances
for the national team, seven in World Cup qualifiers.

These teams played to a 1-all tie in Dallas on May 23. The
Galaxy are 17-4-3 in the series at home, going 9-1-1 at The Home

United tie FC Dallas on Moreno's penalty kick

FRISCO, Texas (STATS) - The two most accomplished goal-scorers
in MLS history each found the back of the net Saturday night,
but a controversial penalty kick determined the outcome.

Jaime Moreno scored his league-record 129th career goal on a
penalty kick in the 58th minute to lift DC United into a 2-2 tie
with FC Dallas at Pizza Hut Park on Saturday night.

The play came after a questionable red card was issued to Dallas
defender Daniel Torres for supposedly taking down DC's Santino
Quaranta in the penalty area. Replays clearly showed Torres
never touched Quaranta.

"If I say anything, I get a fine," Dallas coach Schellas Hyndman
said of the call. "I can't say anything. What I will say is,
look at the video and make your own conclusion."

Not surprisingly, Quaranta maintained that he did not go down on
his own, despite the visual evidence.

"He hit me," said Quaranta, who had two shots on goal. "I
should have scored. It was a penalty. He was behind me, not in
front of me - he touches me, I'm going down."

"The ref is a human being and like anyone, he learns from his
mistakes," FC Dallas goalkeeper Dario Sala said. "(Quaranta)
didn't have any angle, he didn't have any shot. The ref buys
what he sells."

The draw moved DC (7-5-12) into a five-way tie for the final
three MLS playoff spots, while Dallas (6-11-6), which squandered
a pair of one-goal leads, saw its flickering post-season hopes
fade even further.

"It's definitely frustrating going up twice in a game and
letting them back in it," Dallas midfielder Dax McCarty said.
"Give credit to DC, but it's tough coming out of here with only
one point."

Dallas, which played the final 36 minutes a man short, had gone
ahead 2-1 on David Ferreira's fifth goal of the year in the 50th
minute.

"It's disappointing for everyone because I thought we did enough
things to win," Hyndman said. "David, I thought he was very good
tonight, he really played with a lot of passion."

Jeff Cunningham moved into a tie with Ante Razov for second
place on the league's all-time goal list with 114, connecting
for his 10th of the year just 18 minutes in to put Dallas ahead
1-0.

Moments later, Cunningham almost gave Dallas a two-goal lead
when he rang another shot off the goalpost.

Dave van den Bergh assisted on both Dallas goals, giving him a
team-high eight and moving him into a tie for second in the
league.

DC tied the match just before halftime as Marc Burch scored his
first goal of the season off a free kick - his third dangerous
free kick of the match. Sala made nice saves on the first two,
but the third nicked off the inside of Dallas defender Pablo
Ricchetti's foot, changing direction just enough for the ball to
elude Sala.

"It was an unlucky play and it cost us," Sala said.

STATS Senior Writer

D.C. (7-5-11) at FC Dallas (6-11-5), 8:00 p.m. EDT

It's been an interesting few days for D.C. United goalkeeper
Josh Wicks.

Wicks is expected to be in the lineup Saturday night after a
tumultuous week when United look to boost their playoff hopes in
a road game against FC Dallas.

D.C. (7-5-11) snapped a four-game MLS winless streak last
Saturday with a 1-0 victory at Chicago. Wicks recorded his
fourth shutout, but got into a fight with teammate Marc Burch on
the field in the closing minutes. The two had to be separated.

That only set the stage for an even stranger incident involving
Wicks in the U.S. Open Cup final against Seattle on Wednesday.
After the Sounders scored the game's first goal in the 67th
minute, Wicks appeared to step on Seattle star Fredy Montero and
was ejected.

Down to 10 men, D.C. went on to lose 2-1.

"I made a mistake and it cost us a player and it cost us the
game eventually," Wicks said. "It is what it is."

Because his ejection came in the U.S. Open Cup, Wicks is
eligible to play Saturday. D.C. issued a statement saying that
Wicks would be subject to "internal discipline," but he has not
been suspended.

D.C. is in fourth place in the Eastern Conference, six points
behind the second-place Fire in the race for the conference's
second guaranteed playoff spot. With the quick turnaround for
this game after the failure to defend their U.S. Open crown,
United knows that nobody is going to have much sympathy for
them.

"We can cry in our beers, as they say, tonight and tomorrow
morning get refocused and get moving again and go to Dallas
because we don't have a choice, we have to move on and maybe we
can use this disappointment to try to get to another final in
the league," midfielder Ben Olsen said.

D.C. is looking to complete a sweep of Dallas (6-11-5) after a
2-1 victory May 2 behind two goals from Jaime Moreno. United
went 4-1-3 in the last eight meetings with Dallas, although they
lost 3-0 in their last visit to Pizza Hut Park on Sept. 28.

Dallas has 23 points, fourth fewest in the league, after losing
two straight matches. The club is 10 points out of a playoff
spot.

"I think the future is we have to believe that we're
mathematically still in position to get to 40 points," coach
Schellas Hyndman said. "Once we are no longer mathematically in
that position, then we can start talking about next year. I
don't think I would do any justice to my position to have any
other thought.

"I'm disappointed that we've let points slip through our hands
but every team that's fighting for a playoff spot can probably
say the same thing."

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.(AP) -- Juan Pablo Angel scored his second
goal with two minutes left in regulation, helping the New York
Red Bulls beat FC Dallas 3-2 on Sunday and snap a 13-match MLS
winless streak that had reached 16 games in all competitions.

It was the Red Bulls' first victory since May 8 against San
Jose, and gave interim coach Richie Williams a winning debut.
Williams took over after Juan Carlos Osorio resigned Friday.

FC Dallas (6-11-5) dropped to 0-4-1 in its last five road
matches.

Angel missed the previous two matches due to a concussion
sustained in CONCACAF Champions League play. Angel scored the
go-ahead goal when he knocked in the rebound of Macoumba
Kandji's shot in the 88th minute.

His goal came after former teammate Dave van den Bergh picked up
a loose ball from 20 yards out and knocked it past Red Bulls
goalkeeper Danny Cepero in the 73rd minute to tie the game.

Angel gave New York a 1-0 lead in the fourth minute, when he
took a pass from Alberto Celades and eluded defender Pablo
Richetti to put a high chip over the head of FC Dallas
goalkeeper Dario Sala and into the net.

FC Dallas tied the game in the 19th minute, when Dax McCarty
knocked home a shot on a pass from Jeff Cunningham. The ball was
deflected by Red Bulls defender Kevin Goldthwaite, who drew a
red card for reckless play in the second half.

McCarty also assisted on the goal by van den Bergh.

New York took a 2-1 lead in the 27th minute when Dane Richards
scored his second goal of the season off a crossing pass from
John Wolyniec.

FC Dallas-Red Bulls Preview

By MATT BEARDMORE
STATS Writer

FC Dallas (6-10-5) at New York (2-16-4), 3:00 p.m. EDT

FC Dallas still believes it can secure a playoff berth. It will
have to improve its play on the road if that's going to happen.

Dallas goes for its first road victory in nearly three months on
Sunday when it faces a slumping New York Red Bulls club that
will be playing its first game under interim coach Richie
Williams.

FC Dallas (6-10-5) had its two-match winning streak snapped and
fell to 1-7-2 on the road with a 2-0 loss at Columbus on Aug.
15. Dallas trails Real Salt Lake by four points for sixth place
in the Western Conference standings.

"We are convinced we can do better than this," defender Daniel
Torres told Dallas' official Web site. "There's still a chance
to make the playoffs. That's our main goal."

FC Dallas, though, is 0-3-1 on the road since a 3-0 victory at
Chicago on May 31. Dallas plays three of its next four matches
away from home.

Dallas forward Jeff Cunningham looks to add to his team-high
nine goals after his three-match streak of finding the back of
the net ended versus the Crew.

Cunningham, who needs one goal to tie Chivas USA's Ante Razov
for second all-time with 114, scored twice in a 2-1 win over the
visiting Red Bulls on July 4 when he started in place of Kenny
Cooper.

Juan Pablo Angel had New York's goal in that matchup, but he
could miss his second straight match Sunday due to a concussion
suffered in a CONCACAF Champions League game.

Juan Carlos Osorio, meanwhile, will not be on the Red Bulls'
sideline at Giants Stadium. A season after leading New York to
the MLS championship game, Osorio resigned as coach Friday with
the team mired in a club-record 13-match winless streak.

"It has been a difficult season for Juan Carlos and he felt that
it was in the best interest of the team to step aside," Red
Bulls managing director Erik Stover said.

Williams will be the interim head coach for the remainder of the
season. He served in the same capacity from June 27-Aug. 12,
2006, when he replaced the fired Mo Johnston.

The Red Bulls (2-16-4), who have lost six straight matches, are
looking to bounce back from a 2-0 defeat to visiting Chivas on
Aug. 15 when they clinched their worst record since going 7-25
as the MetroStars in 1999.

"To be honest and not joking, I haven't lost this many games in
my whole career," said rookie defender Jeremy Hall.

New York is 0-11-2 since a 4-1 victory at San Jose on May 8.

Red Bulls defender Mike Petke will serve a one-game suspension
Sunday for yellow-card accumulation. New York could also be
without midfielder Albert Celades (right thigh contusion) and
defender Carlos Johnson (lower back contusion), who both left
during the Red Bulls' last match.
