83-59 on the first day of the Basketball Travelers World Vision
Classic.

Anatoly Bose had 20 points and six rebounds for the Colonels
(0-3).

New Mexico (3-0) led from the 14-minute mark of the first half
when it started an 11-minute, 24-4 run to go up 33-15. The lead
never slipped into single digits.

McDonald got plenty of offensive help as Darington Hobson scored
14, Dairese Gary 13 and Roman Martinez 10. Martinez and A.J.

rebounds Tuesday night in Houston's season-opening trouncing of
Nicholls State 92-60.

Coleman was 12-for-25 from the floor, including a pair of
3-pointers. It was the fourth time in his career he scored 30
points or more.

Teammate Kelvin Lewis went six-for-10 from the floor, sinking
all four of his 3-point tries and scoring 18 points. The Cougars
forced 21 turnovers.

Fred Hunter shot a little less than 60 percent for the Colonels
(0-2) and scored a team-high 24 points. Philip Ward went

PITTSBURGH(AP) -- Melquan Bolding scored 25 points and Damian
Saunders grabbed 19 rebounds as Duquesne defeated Nicholls State
85-62 in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Nicholls State, which was led by 23 points from Anatoly Bose,
overcame a 10-point deficit to take a 36-33 halftime lead. But a
21-7 second-half run by the Dukes gave them a 62-48 lead with
7:27 left and spoiled the Colonels' hopes for an upset.

Nicholls State committed 10 fouls in the first 12 minutes. The
Dukes made 9 of 13 free throws in the first half while shooting
50 percent for the game.

Trailing 25-15 with 7:47 left in the first half, Nicholls State
went on a 21-8 run over the next 7 minutes. The Colonels
produced four steals and took advantage of 12 turnovers in the
first half to reclaim the lead for the first time since the

Hansbrough back to health as UNC tops Nicholls State

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- Tyler Hansbrough was
more than willing to show Nicholls State how healthy he was.

Hansbrough scored 27 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as
top-ranked North Carolina recorded an 88-78 victory over the
Colonels on Wednesday.

Playing for the first time since absorbing a concussion late in
the second half of a 93-71 victory at Rutgers on Sunday,
Hansbrough displayed no ill effects from the bump on his head.

"He was fine, I wasn't really that concerned about it," North
Carolina coach Roy Williams said. "Last night, he said he slept
great, eating great, feeling great so I was not worried about
him."

A finalist for both the Naismith and Wooden Awards last season,
Hansbrough appeared to be his normal high-energy self, scoring
11 points in the first half as the Tar Heels took a 48-37 lead.

Even when North Carolina (10-0) was holding a 17-point lead in
the early moments of the second half, Hansbrough continued to
complete the hustle play, diving on the floor near midcourt for
a steal before feeding a streaking Marcus Ginyard for a layup
and a 58-39 advantage with 17:30 remaining.

Overall, the junior forward finished 8-of-13 from the field and
converted 11-of-14 free throws for his third straight game with
at least 20 points.

Wayne Ellington had 20 points and Ty Lawson and Ginyard added 12
apiece for the Tar Heels, who shot 48 percent (28-of-58) in
playing at home for the first time in six games.

North Carolina did show some vulnerability on the defensive end,
allowing Nicholls State to shoot 14-of-28 on 3-pointers in
nearly scoring 80 points.

"We didn't defend and we allowed the ball to get into the paint,
causing everybody to help and allowed them to kick out for open
shots," Ginyard said. "We had bad closeouts, bad help, bad
on-the-ball defense. It was just an overall bad, bad effort
tonight."

Colonels coach J.P. Piper was thrilled that his team was able to
absorb any hits from the nation's top team and stick around.
Earlier in the year, they dropped an 81-58 contest against
Florida State back on November 9.

"I'm ecstatic about the toughness, the attitude toward
competing, the willingness to never give up in the game and
persevere through the times," Piper said. "They got a couple of
steals, they got that dunk in transition and I thought here it
goes, here it goes, the dam is about to burst open, but it never
rattled them and just kept playing. Big steps for us tonight."

Ryan Bathie scored 17 points and handed out eight assists for
Nicholls State (4-8), which saw a two-game winning streak end.

Hansbrough, North Carolina look to stay unbeaten

Nicholls St (4-7) at No. 1 North Carolina (9-0) 9:00 pm EST

CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina (Ticker) -- North Carolina hopes a
return to its home floor will be just as successful as its last
road trip.

The top-ranked Tar Heels look to make it 10 straight wins to
begin the season when they play their first home game in nearly
a month against Nicholls State on Wednesday.

North Carolina, which last played at home on November 20, capped
a six-game road trip with a 93-71 victory at Rutgers on Sunday.

The 9-0 start is also the best for North Carolina since
beginning the 1997-98 season by winning its first 17 games.

The road trip almost ended in disaster when leading scorer and
rebounder Tyler Hansbrough left the game late in the second half
with a concussion. However, the junior is listed as probable
for Wednesday's tilt.

Sophomore point guard Ty Lawson scored a career-high 26 points
in Sunday's win, while Hansbrough posted his fourth consecutive
double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds before leaving the
game.

After losing five straight games earlier in the season, the
Colonels have won two in a row.

Nicholls State has two players averaging in double figures with
Michael Czepil and Ryan Bathie scoring 11.6 and 11.5 points per
game, respectively.

Durant's double-double leads Texas to victory

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- Kevin Durant has not played like a
freshman this season.

Durant recorded his third double-double, scoring 21 points and
grabbing 12 rebounds to lead the 25th-ranked Longhorns to a
91-60 triumph over Nicholls State.

Texas (4-1) opened the second half with a 19-6 spurt, capped by
Justin Mason's jumper with 11:53 remaining to increase their
lead to 65-37.

The 6-9 Durant scored 13 of his 21 points in the half as the
Longhorns shot 51 percent (35-68) from the field.

"We came out a little flat in the first half, and coach (Rick)
Barnes kind of let us know at halftime what we needed to work on
in the second half," Texas guard A.J. Abrams said. "He wanted
us to force the tempo a little bit because they were sagging
back. Coming into the game, he told us they would be playing a
zone so he wanted us to drive the lane and push the tempo.

"He challenged us to do that in the second half. I think we
responded well and came out and played a full-court man and
pushed the tempo to where we like it, and we got the kind of
shots we wanted due to this."

The Longhorns held a slim 24-19 lead with 7:55 to play in the
first half but used a 22-12 run, sparked by Abrams' nine points,
to close the opening 20 minutes with a 46-31 advantage.

"I thought he (Abrams) was good tonight and that he really tried
to make an effort," Barnes said. "I thought he was trying to
go out there and bother people and get his hands on some balls.
If you look at his line, he had a great line. He came out and
really tried to make a difference."

With the win, Barnes moved into second place on Texas' all-time
victories list with 195.

Adonis Gray scored 26 points for Nicholls State (0-6), which
shot just 34 percent (21-of-62).

"No question that was an outstanding basketball team that we
just played," Nicholls State coach J.P. Piper said. "The guys
shot the ball really well tonight. The game plan was to
challenge them to take perimeter jump shots and try to take away
their interior game. They certainly responded and were able to
separate. I was proud of our kids. I thought we competed
hard."

Ryan Bathie added 14 points for the Colonels, which had lost
their first five games by an average of 27.4 points.

Nicholls St (0-5) at No. 25 Texas (3-1) 8:00 pm EST

AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) - Fresh off a third-place finish in the
Coaches vs. Cancer Classic, Kevin Durant and No. 25 Texas square
off against Nicholls State on Tuesday.

Texas absorbed a 63-61 defeat to Michigan State in the first
round of the tournament on Thursday before posting a 77-76
triumph against St. John's in Friday's consolation game.

In the win over the Red Storm, Durant scored 29 points on
9-of-17 shooting. The swingman added 10 rebounds, four assists
and a pair of blocks in 32 minutes.

Through the first four games of his freshman campaign, Durant is
averaging 22.8 points, 9.5 rebounds, 3.2 blocks, 2.0 assists
and 1.2 steals.

Nicholls State, meanwhile, has lost its first five games by an
average of 27.4 points.

The Colonels were pounded by No. 7 Louisiana State on Friday,
dropping an ugly 96-42 decision. Adonis Gray scored 10 points
on 3-of-13 shooting to lead Nicholls State, which shot just 20
percent (13-of-63) and made only 4-of-30 attempts from the arc.

LSU rolls past Nicholls State in lopsided season opener

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) -- If only Garrett Temple and
Louisiana State had shot this well in their last game.

Temple scored all of his career-high 16 points in the first half
as the seventh-ranked Tigers rolled to a 96-42 victory over
Nicholls State in their first game since an ugly loss to UCLA in
last season's Final Four.

Despite losing senior guard Darrel Mitchell to graduation and
high-flying forward Tyrus Thomas to the NBA, LSU (1-0) had no
trouble with the Colonels (0-5), who were overmatched right from
the start.

"I thought the first half, we played pretty well," LSU coach
John Brady said.

The Tigers shot 56 percent both in the first half (14-of-25) and
for the game (31-of-55). It was a far cry from their 59-45
defeat to the Bruins in the national semifinals on April 1, when
they shot a woeful 32 percent, did not make a 3-pointer,
connected on only 13-of-28 foul shots and committed 15
turnovers.

Temple, who missed all six of his shots and committed three
turnovers in the loss to UCLA, was much better in the first game
of his junior season. He made 6-of-10 shots, including four of
the Tigers' 11 3-pointers.

"Garrett made some nice shots," Brady said. "And like I said
before, Garrett and Tasmin Mitchell, (who scored 14 points),
have to be able to make some shots from the perimeter for us to
be the kind of team we want to be. I was happy that they were
able to do that tonight."

Glen Davis scored 16 points and Darnell Lazare added 16 and 10
rebounds for the Tigers, who improved to 13-0 all-time against
the Colonels and won their 61st straight game against teams from
Louisiana.

LSU also held a 49-27 rebounding advantage and dished out 25
assists, compared to only six for the visitors.

"They're bigger, quicker, stronger than what we're used to,"
Nicholls State coach J.P. Piper said. "The margin of time to
get your shot off is so much smaller than what we're used to."

LSU made eight 3-pointers in the first half en route to a 44-18
advantage. Things escalated quickly thereafter as the Tigers
scored 24 of the first 28 points in the second half and led by
as many as 55 points.

"We tried to execute down the stretch even though we were ahead,
and I think we did that for the most part," Brady said.

Adonis Gray scored 10 points to lead Nicholls State, which shot
just 21 percent (13-of-62) and made only 4-of-28 shots from the
arc.

"We can't shoot 13 percent from behind the 3-point line and 20
percent from the field and expect to have a chance to win the
game," Piper said.

Nicholls St (0-4) at No. 7 LSU (0-0) 8:00 pm EST

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (Ticker) - Louisiana State opens its
2006-07 season against Nicholls State on Friday.

The seventh-ranked Tigers enter this campaign with high
expectations after reaching the Final Four last April. LSU fell
just shy of the national title game after suffering an ugly
59-45 setback to UCLA.

One of the Tigers' two biggest tournament stars is returning for
another title run. That is Glen Davis, who averaged 18.6
points and 9.7 rebounds last campaign.

But LSU will have to make adjustments since the high-flying
Tyrus Thomas is now in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls and
second-leading scorer Darrel Mitchell is gone.

The Tigers aim to improve to 13-0 all-time against the Colonels.

Nicholls State suffered its fourth straight loss to open the
season, a 98-83 setback to Pepperdine on Tuesday.

Adonis Gray scored 33 points and Justin Payne and Aaron Scott
both added 15 for the Colonels, who suffered from 21 3-pointers

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Washington buried Nicholls State with a
record-setting night.

Brandon Burmeister scored 17 points and Justin Dentmon added 16
as the 16th-ranked Huskies set a school mark with 17 3-pointers
in a 102-74 romp over the Colonels.

Six players hit in double figures for Washington (2-0), which
shot 55 percent (38-of-69) from the field and 17-of-34 from
3-point range.

Washington had 12 3-pointers in the first half alone in storming
to a 56-22 lead. The Huskies hit five shots from the arc
during a 23-2 run that gave them a 36-8 cushion with 6:39 left
in the half.

Ironically, the Colonels (0-3) had three fewer turnovers than
the Huskies and outscored them, 21-9, at the free throw line,
but could not withstand the barrage of 3-pointers.

Quincy Pondexter scored 14 points and Jon Brockman had his
second consecutive double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds
for Washington.

Adonis Gray scored 29 points and Aaron Scott added 24 for
Nicholls State, which shot 44 percent (25-of-57).

Nicholls St (0-2) at No. 16 Washington (1-0) 10:30 pm EST

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The future is looking mighty bright for
Washington.

The 16th-ranked Huskies try to build off an encouraging season
debut Monday when they hook up with Nicholls State in the
Basketball Travelers Classic.

Washington posted a 99-91 victory over Pepperdine on Sunday as
sophomore Jon Brockman scored a career-high 25 points and tied
his personal best with 12 rebounds. He made 11-of-16 shots and
added two assists and a steal in 23 minutes.

A pair of freshmen also had impressive debuts for the Huskies.
Quincy Pondexter scored 21 points on 9-of-14 shooting and added
seven rebounds and three assists. Spencer Hawes, one of the
most hyped freshmen in the nation, added 12 points, seven
assists, five rebounds and four blocks.

Justin Dentmon chipped in 13 points for Washington, which shot
53 percent (36-of-68) and held a 43-30 advantage on the glass.

Nicholls State was dominated by Mississippi State on Friday,
90-55, before dropping a 68-63 decision to Northern Iowa on
Saturday. Aaron Scott is averaging 13.5 points and 5.0 rebounds
