Iginla's hat trick lifts Flames over Kings 5-2

LOS ANGELES(AP) -- Jarome Iginla created effective scoring chances
even when he sat in the penalty box.

Iginla scored a goal in each period to lead the Calgary Flames
to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings on Saturday.

The Flames captain completed his first hat trick of the season,
and ninth of his NHL career, with a shot from the right circle
that got past Kings goalie Jonathan Quick with 4:07 left in the
game. It was Iginla's 11th goal in nine games.

He scored Calgary's first goal just 13 seconds after the opening
faceoff had tied it 2-2 during a 5-on-3 power play 6:51 into the
second.

But after being whistled for tripping early in the third, Iginla
was left to nervously watch from the penalty box as the Flames
tried to shut down the Kings' power play. Daymond Langkow scored
a short-handed goal to break the tie and send Calgary toward
victory.

"I was hoping and praying," said Iginla, who was pleased to see
the Flames' penalty killers shut down three L.A. power plays on
Saturday. The unit allowed four power-play goals to the
Blackhawks in a 7-1 loss on Thursday.

"They worked hard all night and were so determined," Iginla
said.

David Moss also scored for the Flames, and Miikka Kiprusoff made
23 saves.

"We were assertive, we played an intelligent game, and we were
smart," Calgary coach Brent Sutter said. "Iginla played a wail
of a game, just not the fact that he scored. He was just rock
solid in a lot of areas."

Drew Doughty and Alexander Frolov scored for the Kings, who were
in trouble from the first shift.

Iginla gathered a pass from Olli Jokinen at center and whisked a
wrist shot just inside the Los Angeles blue line that clipped
the skate of Kings defenseman Sean O'Donnell and continued past
Quick.

"You always hope for those, they don't happen very often first
shift," Iginla said. "I was just trying to use him as a screen,
I didn't even see it go in. Scoring that early we were all
pretty excited. Especially after a tough last game, to have an
early start like that, in an afternoon game, was a big boost."

Frolov, skating on the Kings' top line while versatile forward
Ryan Smyth is sidelined with an upper body injury, had gone 10
games without a goal before he swiped in a rebound in the second
period to give Los Angeles a 2-1 lead. That came 38 seconds
after Doughty tied the game.

"We had a 2-1 lead and they came back and tied it, we had 25
shots maybe, but not too many good scoring chances," Kings
captain Dustin Brown said. "That is the result of players not
playing hard, and not playing together."

Anze Kopitar, who leads the NHL in scoring, had an assist on
Frolov's goal. After averaging more than a point per game in his
first 20 games this season, Kopitar has just three assists and
no goals in his last five.

"We just needed a few plays to gain some momentum," Kopitar
said. "The game was right there for us."

NOTES: Kings D Rob Scuderi plans to skate on his own Sunday
morning for the first time since sustaining a lower body
injuring at Tampa Bay on Nov. 14. Scuderi hopes to return to the
lineup Wednesday at Edmonton. ... The Flames will conclude a
two-game road trip at Anaheim on Monday.

Calgary (12-6-2) at Los Angeles (13-8-2), 4:00 p.m. EDT

Brent Sutter wants more emotion from the Calgary Flames after an
embarrassing loss. He may also needs a new strategy with his
leading scorer Rene Bourque hurt and the Los Angeles Kings
missing Ryan Smyth.

The Flames may be without Bourque on Saturday as they try to
continue their domination of a Kings team that is trying to
recover from the loss of Smyth.

Consecutive losses have ended Calgary's momentum after it went
5-0-1 in the previous six games. A 7-1 defeat to Chicago on
Thursday night was particularly tough, and Sutter was angry
afterward.

"It's too casual. I don't like it. I am not used to it," the
coach said. "Get upset. Get upset with each other."

While it's up the players to take his message to heart, Sutter
has to worry about the potential loss of Bourque. The right
wing, who has seven goals and 14 assists, took a hard hit
against the Blackhawks and left with an undisclosed injury.

Bourque scored three goals in his last two games against Los
Angeles (13-8-2), helping Calgary (12-6-2) sweep last season's
four-game series. The Flames outscored the Kings 49-27 in
winning 10 of the last 11 meetings.

Los Angeles has been much better than it was last season, but
Smyth's upper-body injury could leave the team without one of
its major contributors for perhaps a month.

The 15-year veteran has recorded nine goals and 14 assists while
providing steady leadership. He has been paired with league
scoring leader Anze Kopitar on the Kings' top line.

"He's one of the key guys on our team, for sure, but that
doesn't matter right now," Kopitar said. "He's going to be gone
for a month, and somebody else is going to have to step up.
We're just going to have to play hard without him and try to win
games. We're all going to miss him, but his injury is not going
to be healed tomorrow."

Los Angeles hasn't disclosed the nature of Smyth's injury. He
was hurt in a 4-3 win at Florida on Monday night and the Kings
announced the severity of the injury prior to their 3-2 loss to
Philadelphia two days later.

This is the first real dose of adversity Los Angeles has faced
this season. The Kings, trying to end a six-year playoff
drought, are third in the Western Conference with 28 points.

Alexander Frolov took Smyth's spot at left wing versus the
Flyers, but he has been inconsistent after leading Los Angeles
with 32 goals last season.

Frolov, with four goals and 12 assists in 22 games, was held off
the scoresheet in three of his last four home contests.

Los Angeles has lost two straight at Staples Center after going
5-0-1 in its previous six games there.

Calgary plays eight of its next nine on the road, where it is
6-1-2. The Flames have gone 4-0-1 away from the Pengrowth
Saddledome since a 2-1 loss at Columbus on Oct. 13.

Blackhawks rout Flames in playoff rematch

CALGARY, Alberta(AP) -- The Chicago Blackhawks overpowered the
Calgary Flames in a rematch of their first-round playoff series.

Kris Versteeg scored two power-play goals in Chicago's five-goal
second period to help the Blackhawks rout the Flames 7-1 on
Thursday night.

"Great game across the board, I'm very happy with all aspects
and areas of our game," Chicago coach Joel Quenneville said.
"Everyone contributed."

The Blackhawks beat the Flames in six games last season in the
playoffs, ending the series with a 4-1 victory in Calgary. On
Oct. 12 in Chicago in their first meeting of the season, the
Blackhawks overcame a 5-0 deficit to beat the Flames 6-5 in
overtime.

Troy Brouwer and Patrick Kane added power-play goals for the
Blackhawks, 4 for 5 with the man advantage. Dustin Byfuglien,
Andrew Ladd and Ben Eager also scored to help Chicago open a
six-game trip with its fifth straight victory.

"The (power play has) been struggling a little bit this year,
but it's nice to get it back on track tonight," Kane said.
"Obviously, we have a lot of skill on both units, so it's good
to get that going and hopefully we can keep it going."

Cristobal Huet made 27 saves, allowing only Olli Jokinen's
power-play goal.

Chicago converted all three of its power-play chances in the
second period, each the result of an undisciplined penalty.

On the go-ahead goal, Nigel Dawes was in the penalty box for
roughing after he jumped Blackhawks defenseman Niklas
Hjalmarsson in response to the Swede's heavy open-ice hit on
Rene Bourque. Chicago's decisive two-man advantage came as a
result of a too-many-men-on-the-ice penalty followed by a
roughing penalty on Dion Phaneuf.

"We had a lapse in the second and they capitalized on that,"
Phaneuf said. "That's not acceptable. As a group, we have to be
better. We have to play a full 60-minute game."

The Pengrowth Saddledome crowd voiced its displeasure with the
home team, soundly booing the Flames off the ice at the end of
the second period.

"There wasn't a guy in here, every single one of us, that was
nearly good enough especially in an important time of the game
in the second period where we just had a meltdown," Flames
captain Jarome Iginla said. "We've been doing that against this
team for a while and we haven't been good enough lately. That
was embarrassing."

Chicago (12-5-2) at Calgary (12-5-2), 9:30 p.m. EDT

It's been more than a month since the Chicago Blackhawks won a
road game. They'll get plenty of chances to end that drought in
the next 10 days.

Though the Blackhawks are opening their annual circus trip
having lost three straight on the road, a perfect homestand and
their recent dominance of the Calgary Flames should have them
confident going into Thursday night's matchup.

Chicago went 3-2-1 on this trek last season after winning just
six of 35 games from 2001-02 to 2007-08 on its annual road trip
that coincides with the circus taking over the United Center for
two weeks.

The Blackhawks (12-5-2) would likely be happy with a similar
result on this journey considering they've lost all three of
their road games since winning at Nashville on Oct. 15. This
trip includes stops at Edmonton, Vancouver, San Jose and Anaheim
before ending Nov. 28 in Los Angeles.

They enter the opener with momentum after sweeping a four-game
homestand, having rallied for a 4-3 overtime victory over
Western Conference-leading San Jose on Sunday night.

Patrick Kane and John Madden scored in the second period to tie
the game, and Brent Seabrook registered the winning goal 41
seconds into overtime.

"We feel we can win any night, against any team," Seabrook said.
"We have a great group ... and we want to prove that."

This game should be another good test, with the Blackhawks
visiting Calgary for the first time since they eliminated the
Flames from the playoffs in Game 6 of the conference
quarterfinals.

Calgary's two wins in that series are the only ones it has in
the last 11 meetings overall. In regular-season matchups, the
Blackhawks have won five straight at the Pengrowth Saddledome
and five in a row overall over the Flames, including a stunning
6-5 overtime win Oct. 12.

Chicago goaltenders Cristobal Huet and Antti Niemi combined to
give up five goals in the first 11:43, but the Blackhawks
rallied to tie the game with 15:28 remaining and Seabrook scored
the game-winner 26 seconds into the extra period.

"It stings all the way through and we're embarrassed," Flames
star Jarome Iginla said after that loss.

Calgary blew another lead Tuesday night, allowing the game's
final two goals in the last two minutes of the second period in
a 3-2 defeat to visiting Colorado.

"That second goal was a terrible goal to give up," coach Brent
Sutter said. "You get up 2-1 and you've got to really clamp down
and do it the right way."

Calgary (12-5-2), which missed a chance to pass Colorado for the
Northwest Division lead, had been 5-0-1 to begin the month
before that loss - its third in four home games.

The Blackhawks have won all four games since Jonathan Toews'
return from a concussion Nov. 9. Kris Versteeg could return
Thursday after missing Sunday's win with an upper-body injury.

Chicago could receive another boost as Marian Hossa's first
appearance is expected to come sometime during the road trip.
Hossa, who scored 40 goals last season with Detroit, signed a
12-year deal worth $62.8 million July 1 but underwent shoulder
surgery later that month.

Wilson, Hejduk lead Avalanche past Flames

CALGARY, Alberta(AP) -- Ryan Wilson's first NHL points fittingly
came against the team that traded him away.

The Colorado rookie scored his first career goal and added an
assist, Milan Hejduk got the game-winner and the Avalanche beat
the Calgary Flames 3-2 on Tuesday night.

Originally signed as a free agent by Calgary on July 1, 2008,
Wilson was dealt to Colorado last March along with forward
Lawrence Nycholat and a draft pick for defenseman Jordan
Leopold.

"I didn't really play with them but it's always nice to score on
your old team or old organization," Wilson said. "I'm just happy
to get the win and to score my first goal in a winning game.
Certainly I'll remember this one but I have to keep playing this
way and hopefully this little streak I'm on continues."

Cody McLeod also scored and Paul Stastny had two assists to help
the Avalanche (13-5-3) move three points ahead of the Flames
(12-5-2) for the top spot in the Northwest Division.

Jarome Iginla had his 12th goal of the season - and eighth in
his past seven games - and Rene Bourque also scored for the
Flames, who had earned points in each of their previous six
games.

Avalanche goalie Craig Anderson made 34 saves and the defense
blocked 24 more shots to keep Calgary off balance.

"Their 'D' seemed to get in front of every shot," Bourque said.
"The last time we played them, same thing. They did a good job
of taking our space away and they got big in front of you."

Calgary goalie Miikka Kiprusoff made 21 saves as he lost in
regulation for the first time in November.

Aided by an early power play, the Flames had the first six shots
of the game but couldn't get one past Anderson.

The Avalanche then bounced back to send seven straight shots at
Kiprusoff, scoring on one. After Kiprusoff made two straight pad
saves on shots by Wojtek Wolski, Wilson crept in off the point
and picked up a loose puck in the slot before backhanding a shot
into the Calgary net 8 minutes into the game.

"The puck was in there for a while and I think everyone just got
tied up and the puck squirted loose," Wilson said. "The goalie
was down so I moved to the side and put it in there."

At 11:39 of the second period, Curtis Glencross spotted Iginla
wide open in the high slot and sent him a perfect pass that the
Calgary captain one-timed into the top corner past Anderson.

About 5 1/2 minutes later, with the Avalanche on the power play,
Bourque snapped a shot into the top corner over Anderson's
outstretched glove to put Calgary up 2-1.

Prior to the play, Avalanche defenseman Kyle Quincy broke his
stick when he took a slap shot from the point. Dustin Boyd
alertly picked up the puck and sent it to Jay Bouwmeester, who
feathered a great cross-ice pass to Bourque on the left wing in
the Colorado zone.

McLeod converted a feed from Stastny past Kiprusoff to tie the
game at 2-2 with 2 minutes left in the second period. Wilson had
an assist on the play to double his total to four points on the
season.

"That second goal was a terrible goal to give up," said Calgary
head coach Brent Sutter. "You get up 2-1 and you've got to
really clamp down and do it the right way."

Just 66 seconds later, Hejduk attempted to hit Darcy Tucker with
a cross-crease pass while the Avs were on a power play. The puck
deflected off Bouwmeester's skate instead and behind Kiprusoff
to give Hejduk his eighth goal of the season.

The Flames pushed hard to tie the game in the third, but
Anderson preserved the victory when he made a nice pad save on a
point-blank shot by Olli Jokinen with 3 minutes left.

"I'm there for my teammates," Anderson said. "There's going to
be breakdowns, you've got to make the save for that and keep the
score 3-2."

NOTES: Glencross returned to Calgary's lineup after missing
three games due to a suspension for a hit on Chris Drury of the
New York Rangers during a 3-1 win for the Flames at home on Nov.

Colorado (12-5-3) at Calgary (12-4-2), 9:30 p.m. EDT

Nearly three weeks ago, the Colorado Avalanche extended their
Northwest Division lead to seven points after beating the
Calgary Flames.

A rough seven-game stretch by the Avalanche combined with a
Calgary surge has caused that advantage to shrink to the
slimmest of margins.

Colorado tries to halt its longest losing streak of the season
Tuesday night when it visits red-hot Calgary.

The Avalanche (12-5-3) got off to a impressive 10-1-2 start.
They capped that stretch with a 3-2 win at second-place Calgary
on Oct. 28, extending their division lead to seven points.

Things haven't gone nearly as well for the Avs since. Colorado
has gone 2-4-1 while the Flames posted a 5-1-1 record to climb
within a point of the division lead.

The Avalanche lost their third game in a row Saturday, falling
behind by three goals in the opening 10:59 of an 8-2 defeat to
Vancouver.

"They outworked us in all aspects of the game," Colorado center
Paul Stastny said. "We have to be ready to play and we weren't
and it showed. From top to bottom, we have to be better.

"Sometimes, it's a mental game. You can make mental mistakes
when you don't know where you're going and boom, boom, boom,
it's one, two, three to nothing and that's tough to come back
from."

In the last meeting with Calgary, the Avalanche fell behind by
two goals in the first 70 seconds, but rallied to tie the game
midway through the first period before Stastny set up Wojtek
Wolski for the go-ahead score early in the third.

Stastny has five assists in seven games since, but they all came
in two contests. He had four goals and nine assists in the
previous 13 games, and his 14 assists and 18 points overall lead
Colorado.

The Flames have a chance to regain the division lead for the
first time since owning a share of it with the Avalanche on Oct.
13.

Despite losing the last matchup at Pengrowth Saddledome last
month, they're 11-3-2 at home against Colorado since the lockout
that canceled the 2004-05 season.

Jarome Iginla scored two goals Saturday as Calgary beat Toronto
5-2, but Miikka Kiprusoff had to make 38 saves and coach Brent
Sutter wasn't happy with his club's effort.

"Yeah, I'm (upset)," Sutter said. "I wasn't pleased at all
(Saturday). The positives here (against the Maple Leafs) is that
we got two points, our goaltender played very well, the captain
scored two goals and we got a goal on our power play.

"Other than that, it's wasn't a great game on our behalf. We
were fortunate to get a win."

Kiprusoff and Iginla have been key in helping the Flames close
the gap on Colorado.

The goaltender is 4-0-1 with a 0.97 goals-against average and a
shutout in the last five games. However, he had perhaps his
worst performance of the season against the Avalanche, allowing
three goals on 14 shots.

Despite that poor outing, Kiprusoff is 11-3-2 with a 2.44 GAA
and two shutouts in his last 16 home games against Colorado.

Iginla has also been hot of late, scoring seven goals in the
last six games to give him a team-leading 11 on the season.

The five-time All-Star right wing's 63 points in 72 games
against the Avalanche are his most against any opponent. He's
netted three goals in the last four meetings at home, including
one after just 55 seconds of play Oct. 28.

Iginla's 2 goals lift Flames past Leafs

TORONTO(AP) -- Calgary coach Brent Sutter was not happy even after
the Flames' 5-2 win over the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday
night.

"Yeah, I'm (upset)," Sutter said Saturday. "I wasn't pleased at
all tonight."

Jarome Iginla scored two goals and Miikka Kiprusoff made 38
saves to lift the Flames.

"The positives here tonight is that we got two points, our
goaltender played very well, the captain scored two goals and we
got a goal on our power play," Sutter said. "Other than that,
it's wasn't a great game on our behalf. We were fortunate to get
a win."

Eric Nystrom, Dustin Boyd and Jay Bouwmeester also had goals for
the Flames, who rebounded from a 2-1 shootout loss on Friday.

Francois Beauchemin and Matt Stajan scored for Toronto, which
has earned just four points in nine home games (1-6-2) this
season.

Maple Leafs coach Ron Wilson was left to explain his team's
latest loss.

"At the end of the day, you say it's too much Iginla and too
much Kiprusoff," he said.

Iginla and Nystrom scored 16 seconds apart in the first 1:37 - a
pair of goals that starting goalie Jonas Gustavsson probably
should have stopped.

That left Toronto trailing 2-0 for the ninth time in 18 games
this season.

Beauchemin soon started Toronto on the comeback trail. Niklas
Hagman was screening Kiprusoff when Beauchemin one-timed a point
shot into the net at 5:24 of the first.

However, Boyd followed up on his own blocked shot and backhanded
the puck past Gustavsson at 9:54. That prompted Leafs coach Ron
Wilson to replace his rookie goalie with Vesa Toskala, who had a
good effort during the team's 3-2 loss in Chicago a night
earlier.

Toskala seemed to help calm things down and Toronto carried much
of the play for the next 30 minutes, outshooting the Flames 20-4
in the second period.

"They really bounced back," Kiprusoff said. "The second period,
we weren't ready for that."

Only one of those shots, a backhanded rebound by Stajan, got
behind Kiprusoff.

Kiprusoff has allowed just five goals in his past five starts
and is a big reason Calgary ended its three-game road trip with
a victory. He sprawled his left arm out to take the tying goal
off Mikhail Grabovski's stick late in the second period and
turned away Hagman from in-close in the third.

"Thank goodness he was there," Flames defenseman Robyn Regehr
said of Kiprusoff. "I thought for most of the first period and
all the second period, they were the better team.

"He made great saves. I can't say enough good things about him,
he had a tremendous game."

By that point, Iginla had provided his goaltender with a bit
more cushion. The Flames' captain scored his 11th of the season
after roaring down the right wing and beating Toskala high at
2:30 of the third period, giving Calgary a 4-2 lead.

Calgary eventually turned it on during the third period and got
a goal from Bouwmeester.

Calgary (11-4-1) at Toronto (3-8-5), 7:00 p.m. EDT

So far on their swing through the Northeast, the Calgary Flames
stopped one skid while failing to end a longer one. They'll have
to bounce back quickly in order to end another stretch of poor
play in a city where success has been quite rare.

Calgary closes its trip Saturday night against the Toronto Maple
Leafs, who look to continue their nearly 15-year dominance at
home over the Flames.

After a 1-0 win on Tuesday over the Canadiens to snap a
four-game slide in Montreal, the Flames followed with a 2-1
shootout loss Friday to Sabres, dropping to 0-4-3 in their last
seven visits to Buffalo.

Daymond Langkow scored 64 seconds into the game and Miikka
Kiprusoff stopped 32 shots through overtime in his 400th NHL
game yet Calgary failed to win its season-high fifth in a row.

"It was physical, and it was a fun game to be a part of," Flames
captain Jarome Iginla said. "We were looking forward to this
challenge to keep our string going because the Sabres have a
good record. Unfortunately it didn't end the way we wanted it
to."

Toronto has been a much more difficult destination for Calgary
(11-4-2).

The Flames have lost 14 of 15 in southern Ontario after March
1994, including nine games played at old Maple Leaf Gardens. Ten
of those defeats have been by one goal, and they've been held to
three goals or less 12 times.

That wasn't the case on March 14 as Calgary rallied from an
early 3-0 deficit to even the score after one period before
falling 8-6. Olli Jokinen, acquired by the Flames 10 days
earlier from Phoenix, had three goals and two assists.

Jokinen, who was picked up to provide a secondary scoring option
to Iginla, had eight goals in 19 games following the trade but
has had a much tougher time finding the back of the net this
season. The Finnish native has only two goals in 17 games,
putting him on pace for nine which projects as his lowest total
in eight years.

Iginla had five goals in a four-game streak before facing the
Sabres. He comes into Air Canada Centre with a run of three
straight multipoint games against Toronto (3-9-5), totaling two
goals and five assists.

Kirpusoff, who started last season's high-scoring affair versus
the Maple Leafs, is 0-1-1 with a 5.56 goals-against average in
Toronto during his career.

Ron Wilson's team returns home following a 3-2 loss at Chicago
on Friday. Vesa Toskala - making his first start since Oct. 31 -
stopped 31 shots to fall to 0-3-2, but his GAA dropped from 5.13
to 4.77.

"Vesa had an outstanding night," Wilson said. "He made a dozen
outstanding saves."

Despite Toskala's solid effort, he's 0-1-1 with a 4.34 GAA at
home in 2008-09. Rookie Jonas Gustavsson, who's allowed nine
goals in four games this month, will probably get the start.

Phil Kessel scored both goals for Toronto against the Blackhawks
to continue his surge after missing the first 12 games following
offseason shoulder surgery. The former Boston star has scored
all four of his goals during the last three games to move into a
tie with Lee Stempniak for third on the club behind Alexei
Ponikarovsky (7) and Niklas Hagman (6).

However, Kessel has failed to record a point in two career games
against the Flames.

Pominville scores shootout winner for Sabres

BUFFALO, N.Y.(AP) -- In a matchup between two of the best goalies
in the NHL, Ryan Miller didn't blink.

Jason Pominville scored the winner in the fourth round of the
shootout, and Miller made 25 saves to help the Buffalo Sabres
beat Calgary 2-1 on Friday night, snapping the Flames' winning
streak at four games.

Miller, owner of the NHL's best goals-against average, wound up
besting Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff - who entered with a
minuscule 0.99 GAA in his last four games - after first denying
Calgary captain Jarome Iginla's third-round shootout attempt.

That stop opened the door for Pominville's winner, a wrist shot
that beat Kiprusoff between the legs. Miller then calmly turned
aside Rene Bourque's chance, securing the bonus point for
Buffalo.

"They're two elite goalies and two of the best in the league,"
Pominville said. "They both made big saves. That's what you
expect when you play guys like (Kiprusoff), and that's what we
expect in Ryan as well. He's been huge for us all season, and
it's only the start. I can't wait to see what it's like later
on."

After Derek Roy scored in the second round of the shootout,
Calgary's Olli Jokinen countered to help set up Pominville's
dramatics.

"He was taking the glove side away," Pominville said. "He put
his glove pretty high, so five-hole was the shot to go. It ended
up working."

Roy scored in regulation for the Sabres (11-4-1), who won for
the seventh time in 10 home games this season. Buffalo and New
Jersey have both allowed a league-low 35 goals.

"I think any goalie in the league, if he's playing good hockey,
it's probably because his team is playing with a strong sense of
awareness," Miller said. "It's not just that I feel good in the
net, it's because the guys are giving me the opportunity to make
smart reads."

Both goalies kept their teams in it during the first two
periods. Kiprusoff turned aside 17 Buffalo shots in the first
period, and Miller made 12 saves in the second period to keep
the game deadlocked at 1-1.

After peppering Kiprusoff with 18 first-period attempts, the
Sabres had only three in the second period, with their first
shot coming with 4 1/2 minutes remaining.

"It was a close game," said Kiprusoff, who made 32 saves in his
15th start of the season. "They came hard from the first period,
but in the second and third we played better. They were just
better in the shootout."

Daymond Langkow scored for Calgary (11-4-2), which lost for the
first time on the road in exactly a month, and have dropped
seven straight in Buffalo.

"It was physical, and it was a fun game to be a part of," Flames
captain Jarome Iginla said. "We were looking forward to this
challenge to keep our string going because the Sabres have a
good record. Unfortunately it didn't end the way we wanted it
to."

The Sabres had a chance to win it in overtime when they obtained
the man advantage after Jokinen tripped Tyler Myers with 2:31
left, but the Flames were able to kill off the penalty.

Calgary opened the scoring on Langkow's sixth goal of the season
just 1:04 into the game. From in tight Langkow converted a quick
pass from Nigel Dawes to make it 1-0.

Roy countered on the power play with 3:06 left in the first,
swatting a rolling puck with a backhand that went over a
sprawled Kiprusoff.

The Sabres were without gritty forward Mike Grier, who is
day-to-day with a groin injury.

Flames-Sabres Preview

By ANTHONY GIORNALISTA
STATS Senior Writer

Calgary (11-4-1) at Buffalo (10-4-1), 7:30 p.m. EDT

The Calgary Flames are surging even though they aren't getting
much scoring from anybody other than Jarome Iginla. They may
need more offensive balance at Buffalo if they want to continue
their run.

Winners of four straight thanks in part to Iginla's four-game
goal-scoring streak, the Flames look to end a six-game road skid
to the Sabres on Friday night.

Calgary (11-4-1) has matched its longest winning streak of the
season despite getting just nine goals during that span. Iginla
has five of them, the most recent coming in the Flames' 1-0
victory over Montreal on Tuesday night.

Scoring against the Sabres (10-4-1) would give the veteran right
wing a five-game goal streak for the first time since Dec.
11-18, 2007. He was named the NHL's first star of the week
Monday.

Iginla, however, has one goal in his last seven games versus the
Sabres - numbers that match his team's level of road success in
the series.

Calgary is 0-4-2 at Buffalo since a 5-5 tie Feb. 18, 1997. The
Flames have scored two goals or fewer in every game during the
skid.

They will face a Sabres club that is 4-0-0 against Western
Conference teams and 6-2-1 at home on the season, holding
opponents to 2.22 goals per game there.

Rene Bourque, who leads the Flames with 18 points (six goals, 12
assists), was held off the scoresheet in his only matchup with
the Sabres, a 5-2 Calgary win Jan. 28.

He did add to his assist total against the Canadiens.

"He's been playing like a horse," Iginla said.

Calgary mostly has Miikka Kiprusoff to thank for its fast start.
Kiprusoff made 25 saves Tuesday for his first shutout of the
season in the opener of a three-game trip, giving him a 0.99
goals-against average in the last four contests.

He is 10-3-1 with a 2.49 GAA in 2009-10, and 2-1-1 with a 1.97
in four career games versus Buffalo.

Kiprusoff's counterpart with the Sabres, Ryan Miller, has been
even better this season, going 1.82 GAA with a 10-2-0 mark. He
has not been as dominant in his career versus Calgary, though,
posting a 3.36 GAA in two games.

Miller will finally have Patrick Lalime as his backup again
Friday. Lalime, out since Nov. 2 due to a groin strain, is
expected to return.

Buffalo may be without one of its best penalty killers, as Mike
Grier is nursing a groin injury suffered in the second period of
a 3-1 win over Edmonton on Wednesday night. Grier missed
practice Thursday and is day to day.

"We don't anticipate it being too long but he could miss a
little bit of time," coach Lindy Ruff told the Sabres' official
Web site. "He could, but I mean there's still a chance he could
play (Friday) too."

Even without Grier, Buffalo killed off a late 5-minute penalty
against the Oilers. The Sabres stopped six of seven power-play
opportunities, helping them win after allowing nine goals in
losing their previous two contests.

Buffalo had been slumping following an 8-1-1 start.

Flames' Kiprusoff shuts out Canadiens

MONTREAL(AP) -- When Miikka Kiprusoff and Jarome Iginla both
produce, the Calgary Flames can get away with scoring only once.

Kiprusoff earned his first shutout of the season and Iginla
extended his goal-scoring streak to four games, leading Calgary
to a 1-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens on Tuesday night.

Kiprusoff made 25 saves and improved to 10-3-1 this season as
Calgary won its fourth straight to begin a three-game trip. It
was his 31st NHL shutout, his first since Feb. 12, when he
turned aside 36 shots in a 2-0 win over Los Angeles.

"It's always nice. It says a lot about how your team plays in
front of you, too," Kiprusoff said.

Named the NHL's first star of the week on Monday, Iginla scored
his team-leading ninth goal at 14:55.

Iginla, who has scored five times during the streak, took a
return pass from Olli Jokinen and put a shot through traffic
past Jaroslav Halak from the top of the right circle for the
game's lone goal.

"It's a good spot to shoot from, lots of things can happen,"
Iginla said. "It was a quick give-and-go and we just got them
turning a little bit."

Halak stopped 30 shots for Montreal, which has lost its last
three games at home.

"It's tough but sometimes it happens in hockey," Halak said.
"You just have to find a way to score a goal."

The Canadiens, who lost 4-3 in Calgary on Oct. 6, have dropped
five of seven overall.

"It's frustrating. We can't put a goal on the board," said left
winger Mike Cammalleri, who led the Flames with 39 goals last
season before signing a five-year deal with Montreal as an
unrestricted free agent.

Flames forward Curtis Glencross sat out the first game of his
three-game suspension. Glencross was suspended by the NHL on
Monday for his hit to the head of Chris Drury of the New York
Rangers in Calgary's 3-1 win Saturday.

Rene Bourque drew his 12th assist of the season to increase his
team-leading point total to 18.

"He's been playing like a horse," Iginla said. "He took two guys
on him and then I think it went to Olli, then myself. We were
trying to keep it off the wall for a quick give-and-go.

"There wasn't a lot of room on the pass that Olli gave me for
him to get it through but good passers make those."

The sellout crowd of 21,273 came to life during a wild stretch
of 4-on-4 play in the second that saw Montreal's Scott Gomez go
in on a breakaway and deke Kiprusoff, only to lose control of
the puck with an opportunity to shoot over the goalie's right
pad into an open left side.

"Oh yeah, he had me big time," Kiprusoff said. "I was lucky
there."

Kiprusoff protected his shutout with a fine stop on Cammalleri
just over 4 minutes into the third.

"He likes to shoot the puck a lot and you never know what he's
going to do," Kiprusoff said.

The Canadiens, who will celebrate their 100th anniversary on
Dec. 4, wore retro uniforms patterned after those worn by the
1910-11 team. Strikingly similar to the Minnesota Wild's look,
the red-white-and-green throwback jerseys feature a green maple
leaf crest on the front.

"We see the Minnesota Wild a lot and there were some
similarities for sure with the colors, but we knew we were in
Montreal," Iginla said. "It's a good atmosphere in here and the
crowd gets going. They're on every hit and into the play and
stuff. It's definitely another fun building to play in."

NOTES: Kiprusoff had four shutouts last season. ... Flames D
Adam Pardy fought Montreal's Travis Moen 10:38 in. Canadiens RW
Ryan White and Calgary's Eric Nystrom got fighting majors later
in the first. ... The Canadiens, founded on Dec. 4, 1909, wore
light brown gloves to evoke the look of old leather. Montreal
went 8-8 in 1910-11 during the team's second season in the
National Hockey Association, the NHL's predecessor. ...
Canadiens D Jay Leach played his first game since he was claimed
off waivers from New Jersey on Friday.

Flames-Canadiens Preview

By MATT BEARDMORE
STATS Writer

Calgary (10-4-1) at Montreal (8-9-0), 7:30 p.m. EDT

After a relatively quiet October, Jarome Iginla is making plenty
of noise in November.

So are the Calgary Flames.

Opening a three-game trip Tuesday night, Iginla and the Flames
look for their fourth consecutive victory as they take on a
Montreal Canadiens club that's dropped four of six.

Iginla, who led Calgary with 89 points in 2008-09, scored his
first goal of the new season in a 4-3 win over the visiting
Canadiens on Oct. 6, but he only found the back of the net three
more times in the opening month as Calgary finished October
7-4-1.

The Flames' captain, though, will now take a three-game goal
scoring streak into the Bell Centre after being named the NHL's
first star of the week. Iginla notched an assist and a
league-high four goals as Calgary (10-4-1) won three straight to
begin November.

"We had some big road wins (at Dallas and St. Louis last week),
and we started to play a little more disciplined and tighter
defensively," said Iginla, who leads the Flames with eight goals
and is second on the club in points with 14, trailing Rene
Bourque (17). "Fortunately, some are going in this week."

Iginla, Bourque and Daymond Langkow scored in Saturday's 3-1
victory over the New York Rangers, with Nigel Dawes assisting on
all three goals - a career high in assists for the fourth-year
forward.

Calgary is 4-1-1 on the road, and seeking its third straight
victory away from the Pengrowth Saddledome. The Flames, though,
have dropped four straight in Montreal - most recently a 4-1
loss last Dec. 9 - since their last win there, a 3-1 victory
Dec. 13, 2000.

"We've got to carry over what we did on the road (last week),"
said Iginla, who had a goal in the win nine years ago. "On the
road, as a group, we battled harder."

Calgary will be without forward Curtis Glencross, who was
suspended by the league Monday for three games after a hit on
the Rangers' Chris Drury in Saturday's win.

"My intent was to impede that process and it unfortunately
resulted in an awkward collision with Drury," Glencross told the
Flames' official Web site.

Glencross' absence may not hurt the Flames' cause much against
the slumping Canadiens (8-9-0), who are 2-4-0 since winning four
straight Oct. 20-26.

Montreal has also dropped two in a row at the Bell Centre,
including Saturday's 3-1 loss to Tampa Bay.

"I thought our second period was good, the start of the first
was all right but we've given up goals late in periods, two of
them tonight," Brian Gionta said after tying teammate Michael
Cammalleri for the club lead with his seventh goal. "That hurts
the momentum and we've got to figure out a way to play better
for 60 (minutes)."

Cammalleri, who had an assist in the Oct. 6 loss at Calgary,
faces his former Flames teammates in Montreal for the first time
since signing a five-year deal with the Canadiens in the
offseason.

Cammalleri led Calgary with 39 goals last season, and his 82
points were second to Iginla.

Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff made 27 saves against the
Canadiens last month, but is 0-3-0 with a 4.05 GAA in three
career starts in Montreal.

With Carey Price 1-7-1 with a 3.66 GAA in his last nine
appearances, Jaroslav Halak could get the start in goal for the
Canadiens. He stopped 24 Calgary shots in the teams' meeting
last month.

Iginla nets winner in Flames' 3-1 win over Rangers

CALGARY, Alberta(AP) -- In his first meeting against the team that
drafted him, Nigel Dawes had a career night.

Dawes assisted on all three Calgary goals and Miikka Kiprusoff
had 32 saves as the Flames beat the New York Rangers 3-1
Saturday night for their third win in a row.

The highlight of Dawes' first career three-point night was his
setup of Jarome Iginla at 16:47 of the second period. Iginla's
eighth goal broke a 1-1 tie and stood up as the winner.

Dawes burst into the Rangers zone along the side boards and
threaded a pass to Iginla in the slot. The Flames captain
snapped a shot inside the goal post past goalie Steve
Valiquette.

"That pass he gave me coming right down into the slot was a
tough play to make, not everybody sees it," Iginla said. "He put
it right on my stick and gave me a lot of net to shoot at."

Iginla has four goals in three November games after scoring only
four times in October.

"I saw him at the last second there and I just wanted to try and
get him the puck because the percentages of him scoring from
there are pretty good," said Dawes, tied for third on the team
with 10 points (four goals, six assists).

Dawes played parts of three seasons with the Rangers before
being dealt to Phoenix last season. He was claimed off waivers
by the Flames during the summer.

"Any time you play a former team, you're going to get excited
for it," Dawes said. "It was one of those games where things
went my way."

Daymond Langkow and Rene Bourque also scored for Calgary
(10-4-1).

Dan Girardi had the only goal for the Rangers (10-7-1), who went
1-2 on a Western Canada road trip. New York lost captain Chris
Drury less than one minute into the game when Flames forward
Curtis Glencross caught the unsuspecting Drury with a shoulder
to the head.

Rangers coach John Tortorella said Drury sustained a concussion
and expressed his unhappiness with the lack of a penalty call.

"It was a missed call, it should have been a major, they missed
it," Tortorella said.

The Rangers also lost Brandon Dubinsky to an undisclosed injury
early in the second period.

New York hopes to have No. 1 goalie Henrik Lundqvist back on the
ice Thursday when the Rangers face Atlanta. Lundqvist was held
out for a second straight game because of an undisclosed minor
injury.

Valiquette was good against the Flames in making 19 stops, but
Kiprusoff was even better. Kiprusoff was especially sharp over
the final half of the game as New York pressed for the tying
goal.

He turned aside all 24 shots he faced over the last two periods
to improve to 9-3-1.

"That's a pretty good team right there," Kiprusoff said. "They
came hard in the first period and we had some troubles getting
the puck out of the zone but after the first, we played much
better and we were skating more. It was a good two points."

"Our goaltender was outstanding," Flames coach Brent Sutter
said.

In addition to a couple of close-in saves off Marian Gaborik and
dangerous chances by Enver Lisin and Vinny Prospal, Kiprusoff
also got some help.

Late in the third period when Flames defenseman Adam Pardy fell
to give the Rangers a 2-on-1 rush, David Moss hustled back to
tie up Ales Kotalik who failed to get a shot at an open net.

Calgary got some insurance at 16:35 of the third when Dawes and
Rene Bourque worked the puck back and forth. Bourque then fired
a shot past Valiquette to make it 3-1.

"We had some good chances, for sure," Rangers defenseman Wade
Redden said. "In the first period, he made some good saves, we
could have got the early jump on them.

New York tied it 1-1 at 17:16 of the first. Girardi flung a
wrist shot from the blue line that got past Kiprusoff, who was
screened.

"It was one of our better games of the year," Tortorella said.
"Our transition was good, our forechecking was good, the power
play was good, Kiprusoff was the difference."

Calgary opened the scoring at 3:56 of the first period when
Pardy's wrist shot from the blue line went through a maze of
bodies and past Valiquette.

Drury was lost for the night after being hit by Glencross. He
was struck away from the puck and immediately dropped to the
ice. He was down for a couple of minutes before being helped to
the dressing room.

NOTES: Calgary entered the night last in the NHL in power-play
chances (46). The Rangers were number one in times short-handed
(79). The Flames were 1 for 3. New York went 0-for-3. ...
Calgary has scored first in 12 of 15 games (8-3-1). ... Craig
Conroy has gone yet to score in 15 games, the lone Flames
forward without a goal. ... Kiprusoff has gone 38 games since

New York (10-6-1) at Calgary (9-4-1), 10:00 p.m. EDT

Back-to-back overtime wins have the Calgary Flames feeling good
about themselves, while the New York Rangers believe their
latest victory helped them avoid the wrath of their coach.

The Flames return home in search of a third straight win
Saturday night when they face the Rangers, who hope to have
starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist available.

Calgary (9-4-1) lost the final two games of a five-game
homestand Oct. 16-31 and had three days off to prepare for
back-to-back road games. The Flames got back on track with a 3-2
victory Wednesday at Dallas and a 2-1 win Thursday at St. Louis.

"To be able to get two of them in a row, in overtime like this,
it's a great feeling," star winger Jarome Iginla said. "It's
good for momentum."

Three of the Flames' nine wins have come in overtime. They beat
Edmonton 4-3 in a shootout on Oct. 8.

"A good road trip for us," goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff said. "To
come out with four points, that's huge. To win these close
games, it's nice."

New York (10-6-1) is hoping to finish with a winning road trip
after defeating Edmonton 5-3 on Thursday. The Rangers opened the
trip with a 4-1 loss at Vancouver on Tuesday, and had scored
five goals in losing three of four before Thursday.

"We needed a win of any kind period, not just a road win,"
Rangers backup goaltender Steve Valiquette said. "Just like
Edmonton, we have been reeling a little bit and we knew this
game was an opportunity to perhaps turn things around.

"We would have been in deep trouble with (coach John Tortorella)
if we had recorded another loss here."

The Rangers got power-play goals from Marian Gaborik, Ryan
Callahan and Ales Kotalik and their penalty kill unit - which is
among the best in the NHL - stopped all four power-play chances
for the Oilers.

"I think the last two or three games that the effort has been
there, we just found a way to score some goals tonight,"
Tortorella said. "Getting three on the power play really
helped."

New York is hopeful that Lundqvist will be back after Valiquette
started Thursday and made 26 saves. Lundqvist, 8-5-1 with a 2.52
goals-against average, sat out with a stiff right thigh.

The Rangers also ended a four-game road slide. They have won two
of their last three games at Calgary, but lost 4-3 on Jan. 2,
2008, in their first visit in more than five years.

Iginla had a strong road trip for Calgary with three goals and
one assist. He has eight goals and three assists in his last
seven games against the Rangers.

Calgary defenseman Robyn Regehr had a six-game assist streak
snapped in Thursday's win. Regehr has eight points to match his
total from 75 games last season.

Phaneuf's OT goal gives Flames win over Blues

ST. LOUIS(AP) -- The Calgary Flames don't mind playing a little
longer to get a win.

Dion Phaneuf scored 2:50 into overtime to give the Flames a 2-1
victory over the St. Louis Blues on Thursday night.

Calgary has two overtime wins in two nights. The Flames beat
Dallas 3-2 on Wednesday.

Phaneuf whistled a shot off the shin guard of St. Louis winger
T.J. Oshie and past goalie Chris Mason for his sixth goal.

Jarome Iginla scored his team-high seventh early in the first
period to get the Flames going. Miikka Kiprusoff stopped 30
shots for his eighth win of the season.

"To be able to get two of them in a row, in overtime like this,
it's a great feeling," Ignila said. "It's good for momentum."

Three of the Flames' nine wins have come in overtime. They beat
Edmonton 4-3 in a shootout on Oct. 8.

"A good road trip for us," Kiprusoff said. "To come out with
four points, that's huge. To win these close games, it's nice."

Phaneuf fired a shot toward the net from the high slot. It
changed direction and confused Mason.

"It got tipped up high," Mason said. "He was shooting at the
other side of the net and it went in the short side."

Phaneuf said the goal was, "a classic example of traffic.
Luckily, it went in."

St. Louis used a third-period, power-play goal by rookie Lars
Eller to tie the game and a break a scoreless home-ice drought
of more than eight periods. Eller, the 13th overall pick in the
2007 draft, was making his NHL debut. He deflected a shot from
the point by defenseman Erik Johnson to tie it with 12:45 left
in the third period.

He is the 12th St. Louis player to score in his debut. The goal
snapped the Blues' scoreless string at 171 minutes, 5 seconds.
St. Louis has lost six of seven games at home, scoring only
eight goals there this season - including one empty-netter.

St. Louis had failed on 26 power-play chances before Eller's
goal.

Despite the loss, St. Louis coach Andy Murray was happy to see
his team finally score after back-to-back shutout losses to
Phoenix on Oct. 29 and Florida two days later.

"I liked our work ethic and our level of determination," he
said. "You know it's a tough league. You have to scrap and claw
for every point you can get."

Calgary has won eight of nine against St. Louis.

"It was probably our best road game of the year," Calgary coach
Brent Sutter. "We were certainly more patient in the way we
played."

NOTES: Calgary is 3-1 in overtime. ... St. Louis and the New
York Rangers are the only NHL teams that have not had a shootout
this season. ... The Blues have recorded at least 30 shots in
three straight games. ... Calgary D Jay Bouwmeester played in
his 356th consecutive game, the longest streak among active
players. ... Oshie played for the first time since undergoing an
appendectomy on Oct. 24. He missed four games. ... Seventeen of
the 21 skaters that dressed for the Flames have scored at least
one goal this season. ... Calgary D Robyn Regehr had a six-game
assist streak snapped.

Flames-Blues Preview

By JEFF MEZYDLO
STATS Senior Writer

Calgary (7-4-1) at St. Louis (5-6-1), 8:30 p.m. EDT

A serious lack of offense has plagued the St. Louis Blues during
their recent struggles at home. Hosting the Calgary Flames might
not make things much better.

After being held scoreless in their last two games, the Blues
look to avoid a third straight loss and fourth in a row at home
Thursday night against the Flames.

St. Louis (5-6-1) has gone 123 minutes, 50 seconds without a
goal after falling 4-0 at home to Florida on Saturday. That was
two nights after a 2-0 loss to Phoenix at the Scottrade Center.
Though the Blues won 5-2 at Carolina on Oct. 28, they've been
outscored 10-1 while losing three in a row at home where they're
1-5-0 this season.

The Blues were last shut out in back-to-back home games from
Nov. 20-22, 1997. They hadn't been blanked in consecutive games
anywhere since Feb. 28-29, 2004 and have never gone three
consecutive contests without a goal.

St. Louis is 3-6-1 since opening with consecutive victories over
reigning Western Conference champion Detroit in Sweden.

"We've just got to find our game here," said forward Keith
Tkachuk, who has three of the Blues' 29 goals. "We're definitely
off track. We just to find a way to work hard this week and try
to get back."

Facing Calgary (8-4-1) might make that task even harder. Coming
off a 3-2 victory in overtime at Dallas on Wednesday, the Flames
have won three in a row and six of seven in St. Louis.

Jarome Iginla, whose second goal of the night was the winner
against the Stars, has 20 career goals against St. Louis and
five with five assists in his last three road games against the
Blues.

"Certainly Jarome's game was good, and not just because he
scored two goals," said Flames coach Brent Sutter, whose team
avoided a third straight loss. "He's a big, strong guy that gets
in there in areas where he's hard to retain."

Though Curtis McElhinney made 38 saves and denied a
second-period penalty shot in his second start of the season and
21st NHL game, Miikka Kiprusoff could back in Calgary's net
after missing the game due to illness.

Based on Wednesday's effort, Sutter should feel confident
playing McElhinney if Kiprusoff is not ready.

"He hasn't played in a while, and he stood tall and he was
rewarded for it," Sutter said of McElhinney, who's 1-1-0 with a
2.98 goals-against average this season. "He had a great effort."

Kiprusoff is 7-3-1 with a 3.00 GAA this season and 13-3-1 with a
2.33 GAA all-time against the Blues.

St. Louis' Chris Mason made 23 saves against the Panthers and
fell to 3-4-1 with a 2.74 GAA this season. Mason is 3-4-2 with a
3.44 GAA against Calgary.

Mason has been alternating starts lately with Ty Conklin, who's
2-2-0 with a 2.34 GAA this season and 3-2-1 with a 3.17 career
GAA versus the Flames.

It's uncertain if the Blues will have center Andy McDonald
available after he went headfirst into the corner boards early
in the third period and didn't return Saturday. McDonald's four
goals are tied with Paul Kariya for the team lead.

Iginla's OT goal lifts Flames past Stars

DALLAS(AP) -- Calgary coach Brent Sutter recently asked for more
from captain Jarome Iginla, and that's what Sutter got.

Iginla scored a power-play goal at 1:25 of overtime - his second
goal of the game - to give the Flames a 3-2 comeback victory
over the Dallas Stars on Wednesday night.

"Certainly Jarome's game was good, and not just because he
scored two goals," Sutter said. "He's a big, strong guy that
gets in there in areas where he's hard to retain."

Iginla scored four times Calgary's first dozen games, not bad,
but Sutter expects big numbers from a player who had 85 goals in
the previous two seasons.

"We've been talking a lot as a group about bringing our compete
level up, and we really battled tonight," Iginla said. "It was a
step in the right direction."

Daymond Langkow tied it for the Flames with 49 seconds left in
regulation and goalie Curtis McElhinney on the bench for an
extra attacker. Iginla passed in front to Langkow, who
backhanded the puck past Marty Turco.

Dallas drew a delay of game penalty at 1:09 of overtime when
defenseman Nicklas Grossman was whistled for shooting the puck
out of the rink - a call disputed by Stars coach Marc Crawford.

The Flames needed only 16 seconds to capitalize when Iginla
fired a shot from the left point that got past Turco, who was
screened by Calgary's Olli Jokinen.

"The overtime didn't really last very long, and it's somewhat
frustrating because it didn't look like it was a penalty,"
Crawford said.

Iginla didn't even know he'd scored through a crowd until he was
mobbed by teammates.

"In overtime and 4-on-3, you're just trying to set up the
umbrella," Iginla said. "I could see Olli in front. I was
thinking if I just got it by him, it could have a chance to go
in. I didn't even see how it went."

McElhinney, the backup to Miikka Kiprusoff, made 38 saves and
stopped a second-period penalty shot in his second start of the
season and 21st NHL game. Kiprusoff sat out because of illness.

"He hasn't played in a while, and he stood tall tonight and he
was rewarded for it," Sutter said. "He had a great effort."

Turco, back after missing two games due to flu-like symptoms,
stopped 19 shots.

Loui Eriksson gave Dallas a 2-1 lead at 8:52 of the third
period, skating to the net and tapping in Brad Richards'
centering pass.

Dallas' Brenden Morrow was awarded a penalty shot at 12:26 of
the second period after he was hooked to the ice on the way to
the net by Calgary defenseman Mark Giordano, but Morrow's wrist
shot was easily steered aside by McElhinney to keep the game
scoreless.

Iginla put the Flames in front at 15:53 of the second period
with a wrist shot from the right circle.

McElhinney had a strong second period, stopping all 16 shots he
faced.

Dallas' James Neal tied it 1 at 4:49 of the third period.

The Stars had far more scoring chances than the Flames, but that
was little consolation for a team that has gone to overtime
seven times, winning once.

"We did what we wanted to do against Calgary; we got the puck
behind the defense, we really exposed the defense," Crawford
said. "I thought they were on their heels the better part of the
night. We generated a number of power play opportunities. I
thought we were the better club in terms of chances generated by
a long shot."

Forwards Mike Modano and Jere Lehtinen were back in the Dallas
lineup after each missed extensive time with injuries. Modano,
the career scoring leader among U.S.-born players, sat out 13
games because of a rib injury, and Lehtinen was out for nine
games with abdominal soreness.

NOTES: Each of McElhinney's starts this season have come against
Dallas. The Stars were 5-2 winners at Calgary on Oct. 9 in the
first meeting between the teams. ... Stars D Karlis Skrastins
had two assists. ... Both teams had been off since Saturday
night. ... Calgary D Jay Bouwmeester played in his 355th
consecutive game, the league's longest active streak.
Bouwmeester assisted on Iginla's winner.

Official fired after Flames flu shot controversy

EDMONTON, Alberta(AP) -- A senior staff member for Alberta Health
Services has been fired for giving the Calgary Flames swine flu
shots while thousands of people waited in line for the vaccine
last week.

The board, which reports directly to the Alberta government,
won't name who was dismissed Wednesday and said more people
might be punished for their roles.

"I am deeply offended that this circumstance has occurred," Ken
Hughes, chairman of Alberta Health Services, said in a news
release. "The decision to allow preferential access to the
Flames and their families was a serious error in judgment."

Hughes said the "most senior staff member involved" was
dismissed.

Flames president Ken King said Tuesday the players and their
families received their shots on Friday at a private location.
He said they believed they had gone through proper channels at
Alberta Health Services, the agency that administers health
services for the province.

King said they felt the shots were a priority for the players
because of their extensive cross-border travel and the
close-contact physical nature of their sport. He also said they
didn't want to cause a commotion by having the players stand in
line at a public clinic.

However, he didn't say why that rationale would apply to Flames
management and players' families.

The revelation angered many people who have criticized Alberta's
swine flu vaccine rollout, which was plagued by long lineups
before it was shut down Saturday.

Other sports teams in Canada, including the Edmonton Oilers, the
NBA's Toronto Raptors and the CFL's Edmonton Eskimos, have said
they did not seek or get preferential H1N1 vaccines for their
players.
