Mets sweep Arizona on road for first time since '06
Apr 17, 2014 - 12:13 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Dillon Gee tossed seven scoreless innings to earn his first win of the season and Anthony Recker homered, as the New York Mets downed Arizona, 5-2, to sweep the three-game set.Daniel Murphy, David Wright and Kirk Nieuwenhuis each drove in a run for the Mets, winners in five of their last seven and owners of their first road sweep of Arizona since a four-game triumph from June 8-11, 2006.
Gee (1-0) was yanked after only 72 pitches, having allowed only three hits while striking out three. He also added an RBI groundout and began the afternoon by retiring the first 14 batters he faced.
"Everything kind of clicked today," Gee said. "Terry (Mets manager Collins) did what he had to do and I respect it. I definitely wanted to keep going."
Paul Goldschmidt doubled and homered, while Aaron Hill added a solo shot for the Diamondbacks, who finished their homestand 0-6.
Brandon McCarthy (0-3) was tagged for seven hits and three runs over his 5 2/3-inning outing.
In the home seventh, Goldschmidt doubled with one away, but Andrew Brown made a leaping grab against the right-field wall to rob Miguel Montero of extra bases. Gee completed his outing on a Curtis Granderson grounder to second.
Kyle Farnsworth gave up a leadoff hit to Martin Prado and a one-out single from Tony Campana one frame later, but fanned pinch-hitter Eric Chavez looking and Scott Rice entered to retire Parra on a grounder to second.
The Mets tacked on two more runs in the ninth on RBI singles from Murphy and Wright, and needed them when Hill and Goldschmidt hit back-to-back homers off Jose Valverde to start the home portion. Valverde retired the next two batters, then Prado singled before Cliff Pennington's fly out ended the contest.
"Mack threw good enough to win that game," D-Backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "We played poorly. We made mistakes, we ran into an out, we made a couple of errors, we're not able to contain guys running the bases and we're not able to throw the ball to first base."
Recker's two-out solo blast in the second put the Mets on the board.
New York picked up another run in the fourth, as Ike Davis singled, moved to third on a Brown double and came home on a Nieuwenhuis fly to center.
The visitors went up 3-0 in the sixth. Brown singled, moved to third on a Recker double, and after Ruben Tejada was walked to load the bases, Gee's pinball groundout plated Brown.
Gee helped prevent a run in the home sixth, as Parra singled with two down, but the New York hurler tagged him out at second as the final player in a three-man relay.
