Tulowitzki, Rockies top D-backs
Apr 29, 2014 - 6:29 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Troy Tulowitzki smacked a solo homer, a pair of doubles and drove in three as the Colorado Rockies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks, 8-5, in the opener of a three-game set.Justin Morneau belted a two-run shot for the Rockies, who have won five of their last seven games. Nolan Arenado tallied two hits and a pair of runs in the triumph.
Franklin Morales (3-1) allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over five innings to notch the win. LaTroy Hawkins fired a scoreless ninth for his eighth save of the year.
"Franky struggled a little bit to get through five, high pitch count, didn't have his best command but put us in position to win that game," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Morales.
Wade Miley (2-3) was roughed up for seven runs on 10 hits and a walk over six frames for Arizona, which has dropped three straight on the heels of a three- game winning streak.
"I didn't get the job done," Miley admitted. "That one's on me."
The game was tied 4-4 before Morneau and Tulowitzki helped put the Rockies in front in the sixth.
Tulowitzki led off by drilling a 2-2 fastball over the heart of the plate into the front row of seats in left. Arenado hit a one-out single before Morneau pulverized a belt-high offering from Miley well over the wall in right-center to make it 7-4.
Arizona got a run back in the seventh on Miguel Montero's one-out RBI single, but Colorado added an insurance run in the ninth on Charlie Blackmon's sacrifice fly.
Earlier, Carlos Gonzalez's two-out RBI double in the first opened the scoring, but Gerardo Parra's one-out blast to right in the second knotted the game.
Both teams plated a pair of runs in the third.
Tulowitzki sliced a two-out, two-run double into the right field corner in the top half of the frame, while Montero's sacrifice fly and Aaron Hill's run- scoring single in the bottom of the inning made it 3-3.
Arenado cracked a leadoff double in the fourth and later scored on Jordan Pacheco's two-bagger to give Colorado a 4-3 edge.
Martin Prado began the fifth with a triple off the wall in left-center and scored on Paul Goldschmidt's groundout to make it 4-4.
