Brewers power past Diamondbacks
May 6, 2014 - 5:52 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Carlos Gomez, Martin Maldonado and Jean Segura all belted home runs as the Milwaukee Brewers slugged their way to an 8-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks in the opener of a three-game series. All three players finished with a pair of hits, with Gomez knocking in three runs and Maldonado and Segura each delivering two-run shots that helped get the Brewers out of a recent funk. Milwaukee returned to Miller Park having dropped four of five to conclude a seven-game road trip.
Matt Garza (2-3) benefited from the power surge and recorded his second win of the season after allowing three runs on eight hits through six innings.
"To back me the way they did tonight is awesome," Garza said of his offense. "Just to go out there and gut it out and grind it out for them is the least I could do."
Mike Bolsinger (1-2) served up two of the Brewers' homers and was reached for four runs over five innings.
Aaron Hill went 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI singles for Arizona, with Gerardo Parra collecting two hits and scoring twice in defeat.
The Brewers manufactured a run off Bolsinger in the bottom of the fifth inning to snap a 3-3 tie, then scored four times against Randall Delgado in the sixth to break open the previously tight contest.
Scooter Gennett led off Milwaukee's half of the fifth with a double and was moved home on a pair of fly balls, with Khris Davis' sac fly to center driving in the go-ahead run.
"(Bolsinger) had two strikes on (Davis) and hung him a curveball," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said of the at-bat against Davis. "You throw a good ball down and run it out of the zone you should be able to get the strikeout but (Bolsinger) didn't do it and (Davis) got the sac fly."
Delgado worked his way into trouble with a pair of one-out walks in the sixth, then tossed a wild pitch before Gomez slashed a single to right to plate both runners. Segura followed with a no-doubt blast to left that put the Brewers ahead comfortably at 8-3.
Garza had been handed a 3-1 lead on Maldonado's two-run homer in the second, but quickly gave it away an inning later. He hit Parra with a pitch and served up singles to Paul Goldschmidt and Miguel Montero that got Arizona within one, with Hill knotting the score with a bloop single to left.
The Diamondbacks could have done more damage in the third, but Garza came up with back-to-back strikeouts of Alfredo Marte and Ender Inciarte to escape a bases-loaded jam.
Garza settled down thereafter, with the Diamondbacks managing no more than one man on base while failing to score over the next three innings.
Hill's two-out single brought in Parra and staked Arizona to a 1-0 edge in the top of the first, but Gomez clobbered Bolsinger's initial pitch of the night over the wall in center to even the score.
Milwaukee then went in front on Maldonado's homer, a towering drive into the second deck in left center which came two batters after Mark Reynolds singled in the second.
Game Notes
The Diamondbacks left 12 runners on base ... The Brewers are now an MLB-best 18-0 this season when scoring four or more runs ... Garza improved to 4-1 in five career starts against Arizona, which won six of the seven meetings between the clubs last season and swept a three-game set in its lone visit to Miller Park ... Milwaukee's Aramis Ramirez singled in the third inning to end a 1-for-35 stretch ... Maldonado's homer was his first since Sept. 27 of last season at the New York Mets.
