Cabrera, Jackson power Tigers past D-backs
Jul 24, 2014 - 3:55 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Cabrera hit a three-run homer, Austin Jackson had a three-run double and the Detroit Tigers cruised to an 11-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday.Alex Avila also drove in three for the Tigers, who took two of three games in the series.
Hours after the game, the AL Central leaders got help for the back end of their bullpen by acquiring closer Joakim Soria from the Texas Rangers in exchange for pitching prospects Corey Knebel and Jake Thompson. Despite the move, Joe Nathan, who has a 5.89 ERA this season, is expected to remain Detroit's closer.
Didi Gregorius hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbacks, who climbed out of a 7-0 hole to get within two runs after seven innings before giving up four in the eighth. They finished 4-2 on a six-game homestand.
"Give the Diamondbacks credit. They kept clawing their way back in it," said Tigers manager Brad Ausmus. "It wasn't until Miggy's homer (in the eighth inning) that we put it away."
Jackson hit a three-run double in a five-run fourth inning that gave Detroit its 7-0 lead. He was 2-for-5 with two runs scored -- the sixth game in a row he had two hits. Jackson has at least that many hits in nine of his last 10 games and is batting .452 over the span.
Anibal Sanchez (7-4) received good run support and picked up the win despite giving up five runs on 11 hits and a walk in 6 1/3 innings.
Trevor Cahill (1-7) went just four innings in his second start since being called up by the Diamondbacks. He surrendered seven runs -- just three earned -- on eight hits and fell to 0-5 in six starts this season.
Avila hit a two-run double off Cahill in the second inning to give the Tigers a 2-0 lead.
Cabrera, Victor Martinez and Don Kelly hit consecutive no-out singles in the fourth inning to spark a five-run rally that pushed Detroit's lead to 7-0.
Avila knocked in the first run on a sacrifice fly and the Tigers loaded the bases again after a successful challenge overturned an out call at first base on Andrew Romine's grounder (second baseman Aaron Hill was charged with an error after bobbling the ball).
Jackson knocked them all in with a double to the left-field wall that got past a diving Mark Trumbo and he scored on Rajai Davis' single.
The Diamondbacks scored five runs over the next three innings to make a game of it before the Tigers came back with four in the eighth.
"We come every day with the will to win so even when we're down we're going to find a way to get things going," said Gregorius. "Today didn't go our way but hopefully next series will be better."
Gregorius followed Martin Prado's RBI double with a two-run blast into the pool behind right-center field, his third homer of the season. Gerardo Parra hit an RBI single in the sixth and David Peralta drove Gregorius in with a base hit in the seventh to get Arizona within two runs.
Joba Chamberlain replaced Sanchez with one out and the tying runs on base in the seventh and got All-Star slugger Paul Goldschmidt to ground into a double play on his first pitch.
Ian Kinsler hit an RBI single in the eighth and Cabrera followed with his 15th homer of the season, a blast off the left-field pole to make it 11-5.
Game Notes
Davis and Parra led their teams with three hits each ... Chamberlain struck out swinging in the eighth inning in his first plate appearance since 2009 with the Yankees ...
