Peralta, Trumbo power D-backs past Rockies
Aug 10, 2014 - 5:08 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - David Peralta hit a grand slam and drove in a career-high five runs to help the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 14-4 beatdown of the Colorado Rockies on Saturday.Mark Trumbo homered and knocked in four runs, while Alfredo Marte also went deep in Arizona's sixth straight win over Colorado. Cliff Pennington went 3- for-4 with four runs scored in the triumph.
"I don't really judge success on home runs, but competitive at-bats," said Trumbo, who hadn't homered since April 21. "Some at-bats have been better than others. I got here earlier today to work on some things. It's still a work in progress."
Trevor Cahill (2-8) grabbed his first win since April 23 in a relief appearance against the Cubs. The right-hander allowed three runs -- two earned -- on four hits with seven strikeouts over seven innings. The win is Cahill's first as a starter since Sept. 21, 2013 at Colorado.
Jorge De La Rosa (11-8) took the loss after giving up four runs on six hits over six innings on the hill. Nolan Arenado was the lone bright spot offensively for Colorado, going 2-for-3 with a homer, three RBI and two runs scored.
The Rockies have lost 11 of their last 13 games overall and 20 of their last 22 on the road.
Justin Morneau was hit by a pitch with two outs in the first and raced home on Arenado's double to left. Corey Dickerson followed with a ground ball to first that could have ended the inning if it wasn't for a missed catch error by Cahill. Arenado scored on the miscue to help the Rockies to a 2-0 advantage.
Arizona got a run back in the home half, however. Pennington singled, stole second and hustled home on Peralta's double to right.
Arenado knocked in Josh Rutledge with a sacrifice fly in the third to restore Colorado's two-run cushion.
Trumbo smashed his eighth homer of the season, a three-run shot, to give the Diamondbacks a 4-3 edge in the home half.
"Trumbo was the big one off of (De La Rosa)," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "(De La Rosa) always goes out and puts us in position to win games."
Tommy Kahnle relieved De La Rosa in the seventh and was immediately greeted by Marte smacking a homer to left.
The Rockies cut the deficit to 5-4 after Arenado knocked his 11th homer of the season in the eighth, but the hosts answered with nine in the home half which turned the game into a rout.
Pennington and Peralta singled, then each advanced on a wild pitch by Kahnle. Trumbo followed with an infield single to third base that plated Pennington and Peralta. Trumbo advanced to second on a throwing error by Arenado on the play. Aaron Hill added a sac fly later in the inning and Didi Gregorius singled home a run to make it 9-4.
Two more singles loaded the bases before Pennington stepped in and drew a walk to force in another run. The big blow came in the next at-bat when Peralta drilled a grand slam to right center which accounted for the final margin.
Game Notes
Cahill entered the game with an 0-6 record and a 6.35 ERA in eight starts this season ... De La Rosa has dropped two straight decisions after winning five straight ... Arizona had 15 hits ... Arenado committed his 11th error of the season ... The D-backs went 6-for-12 with runners in scoring position, while Colorado went 1-for-3 in those instances.
