Diamondbacks beat slumping Padres
Aug 24, 2014 - 3:31 AM Phoenix, AZ (SportsNetwork.com) - Didi Gregorius belted a three-run homer in the bottom of the eighth inning to lift the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-2 win over the San Diego Padres at Chase Field.Vidal Nuno took a shutout into the eighth and Jake Lamb hit his first major league homer for the Diamondbacks, who snapped a six-game losing streak in Friday's opener of this three-game set.
The Padres, who fell to 2-7 on their 10-game road trip, tied the game in the top of the eighth on Yangervis Solarte's two-out, two-run single.
Nuno, winless with the D-backs since coming over from the New York Yankees in the Brandon McCarthy trade, allowed only one hit -- a Cameron Maybin single -- through the first seven innings.
The lefty hit Rymer Liriano with a pitch to open the eighth and gave up another base hit to Maybin before walking Alexi Amarista to load the bases.
Oliver Perez (3-3) relieved Nuno and served up Solarte's bouncer up the middle after striking out Jedd Gyorko.
Gregorius took Kevin Quackenbush (2-3) deep to right field in the home half of the frame. The blast followed a one-out walk to Alfredo Marte and a Lamb single.
Addison Reed picked up his 30th save by tossing a 1-2-3 ninth.
Andrew Cashner made his first for San Diego in over two months after being activated from the disabled list. Cashner, who was sidelined with right shoulder soreness, gave up two runs on seven hits and walked two in five innings.
Ender Inciarte doubled to begin bottom of the first and came around on a Cliff Pennington single. Lamb led off the second with a drive over the right-center field wall.
Game Notes
The D-backs lost each of Nuno's first eight starts with the club ... San Diego optioned pitcher Frank Garces to Double-A San Antonio to clear room for Cashner.
