Peralta, D-backs down Padres
Sep 4, 2014 - 5:11 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - David Peralta went 2-for-5 with two RBI to help the Arizona Diamondbacks in a 6-1 win over the San Diego Padres in the third matchup of a four-game set.Josh Collmenter (10-7) continued his dominance over the Padres, yielding one run on five hits over seven strong innings. Collmenter, who allowed one unearned run over 8 1/3 innings on Aug. 22, is now 3-0 with a minuscule 0.87 ERA in three starts against the Padres this season.
"Pretty good," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said of Collmenter. "He was able to make pitches when he needed to. He's much better when he works down."
Andrew Cashner (2-7) took the loss after going seven innings and surrendering four runs -- two earned -- on five hits with five strikeouts. The right-hander hasn't won since April 16, a span of 11 starts without a victory.
San Diego had its two-game winning streak snapped ahead of the series finale on Thursday.
"Last year he got a great deal of confidence and momentum," Padres manager Bud Black said of Cashner. "He'll finish strong here physically. I suspect that he will continue to throw the ball in the mid-90s and go into the winter strong."
With the game tied, Arizona plated three in the fifth to grab some breathing room. Alfredo Marte walked to lead off the inning and Didi Gregorius doubled two batters later. Collmenter stepped in and grounded one to second, where Cory Spangenberg fired home and appeared to get Marte at the plate. Home plate umpire Cory Blaser called the runner safe, however, and after a review, the call on the field was upheld with the D-backs taking a 2-1 lead.
A missed catch error by Yangervis Solarte during a rundown allowed Gregorius to score later in the inning, then Peralta capped the rally with an RBI single to center.
Arizona added to its lead in the seventh when Mark Trumbo doubled and Miguel Montero followed with a single to right that made it 5-1. Chris Owings delivered a sacrifice fly in the ninth to account for the final margin.
Arizona got on the board in the first with an RBI triple by Peralta. Owings singled prior to Peralta driving a ball to center for his ninth triple of the season.
Seth Smith followed an Alexi Amarista single with a double that tied the game at 1-1.
Game Notes
Cashner has allowed two earned runs or fewer in 16 consecutive home outings ... San Diego had won seven of nine games overall and 16-of-19 at home ... Arizona snapped its eight-game losing streak on the road ... D-backs pitcher Daniel Hudson made his return to the mound after two Tommy John surgeries and tossed a scoreless eighth. He last pitched on June 26, 2012.
