Braves best Marlins on Gattis HR
Apr 22, 2014 - 5:53 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Evan Gattis smoked a frozen rope to left for a two-run game-winning homer in the bottom of the 10th inning that gave the Atlanta Braves a 4-2 win over the Miami Marlins in the opener of a three- game set."It feels different when you hit one and know the game is over," Gattis said.
Dan Uggla led off the bottom of the 10th with a single back up the middle before Gattis came up and ripped a 1-0 fastball from Arquimedes Caminero over the wall in left.
Gattis finished 2-for-4 and Andrelton Simmons had two hits with a solo blast and two runs scored for the Braves, who have won eight of 10. Jason Heyward also drove in a run.
Coming off of his first career shutout, Braves starter Julio Teheran was stellar through seven frames, as he fanned eight and surrendered one run on five hits and issued one walk.
Craig Kimbrel struck out three in the ninth but blew the save, however. Anthony Varvaro (1-0) picked up the win despite giving up two hits in the top of the 10th.
Garrett Jones went 2-for-5 with a solo homer for Miami and Derek Dietrich hit an RBI double, which was the Marlins' only other extra-base hit.
Miami starter Tom Koehler hurled 6 1/3 innings, striking out eight and allowing two runs and two walks.
Koehler has thrown at least six innings and given up a maximum of two runs in each of his first four starts of the season, which tied the club's longest streak to begin a season set by Kevin Brown in 1997.
"Every loss is a tough loss," Koehler said. "Sometimes things happen like that, we get to wake up tomorrow and get back at them."
Caminero (0-1) failed to retire any of his two hitters he faced and picked up the loss.
Miami got on the board first when Jones smacked a leadoff homer in the top of the second, extending his hitting streak to seven games.
After throwing four scoreless frames, Koehler left a hanging curveball over the plate and Simmons made him pay, sending the ball deep to left for a one- out solo shot in the fifth.
In the seventh, Simmons singled up the middle before Ryan Doumit sent Simmons to third with a pinch-hit single. Heyward followed up with a single of his own to plate Simmons and give the Braves a 2-1 lead.
B.J. Upton was then walked by Marlins reliever Mike Dunn to load the bases, however, Dunn got Freddie Freeman to pop-out. A.J. Ramos replaced Dunn and struck out Justin Upton to work Miami out of the jam.
Trailing 2-1 in the top of the eighth, Christian Yelich hit a single and Marcell Ozuna walked. Giancarlo Stanton then hit a grounder to Simmons, who flipped to Uggla to turn two. Uggla dropped the ball on the exchange but Ozuna was ruled out on the play.
Miami manager Mike Redmond challenged the play and the call was overturned, ruling Ozuna safe. Braves reliever Jordan Walden struck out Casey McGehee and got Jones to groundout to end the threat from Miami.
Braves closer Kimbrel came in to shut the door in the ninth and walked Jarrod Saltalamacchia to start the inning. Adeiny Hechavarria then reached base on catchers interference by Gattis before a Dietrich double to left-center plated Reed Johnson, who pinch-ran for Saltalamacchia, to tie the game at two-apiece.
Game Notes
Miami fell to 0-7 on the road this season ... Yelich went 2-for-5 and extended his career-high hitting streak to 15 games ... Stanton is hitless in 11 at- bats over the past three games ... Miami went 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base, while the Braves were 2-for-10 with RISP and stranded 12 runners.
