Hernandez, M's down Braves
Aug 6, 2014 - 5:09 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Felix Hernandez fired eight innings of one- run ball and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Atlanta Braves, 4-2, in the opener of a brief two-game series.Hernandez (12-3) extended his MLB record of tossing at least seven innings while allowing two-or-fewer runs to 15 games. He surpassed Tom Seaver's mark in his last outing.
Hernandez, who received three runs of run support or fewer in eight of his last nine starts coming in, struck out eight, scattered four hits and walked one for Seattle, lowering his ERA to a sparkling 1.97 on the year.
"The bats came through," Hernandez said.
Fernando Rodney gave up a run in the ninth, but still earned his 31st save of the season.
Alex Wood (7-9) yielded four runs -- one earned -- on five hits and four walks over six frames for the Braves, who have dropped seven straight games.
The Braves led 1-0 before the Mariners plated four runs in the fourth to surge ahead.
Kyle Seager was hit by a pitch with one out and Chris Denorfia followed with a single. Logan Morrison then rolled one through the hole on the left side to bring home Seager as both runners advanced a base on the throw home.
Mike Zunino struck out before Chris Taylor popped one up near the foul line in shallow right, but the ball popped in and out of the glove of Tommy La Stella as Denorfia and Morrison crossed the plate to give Seattle a 3-1 lead. Taylor scored on Austin Jackson's base hit up the middle.
Justin Upton's RBI groundout in the ninth capped the scoring.
Earlier, the Braves opened the scoring in the second when Upton hit a leadoff double and was later pushed across on Chris Johnson's single to left.
