Mariners extend Braves' skid to eight
Aug 7, 2014 - 12:58 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Logan Morrison hit a go-ahead three-run home run in the third inning as the Seattle Mariners beat the Atlanta Braves, 7-3, to complete a two-game series sweep and hand the Braves their eighth straight loss.Dustin Ackley, Kendrys Morales, Kyle Seager and Chris Taylor finished with one RBI each as the Mariners won back-to-back games for the first time since winning four in a row from June 29-July 2.
Chris Young (10-6) allowed three runs on seven hits while striking out six in five innings, earning his first 10-win season since 2006 with the San Diego Padres.
"It's my goal coming in to be able to take the ball and go out there and compete and give my team a chance to win," Young said. "We've had a tough stretch. We've played some tough teams, but you just have to concentrate on one game at a time."
Freddie Freeman drove in two of Atlanta's runs with a double in the third inning. He finished 3-for-4 on the day.
Julio Teheran (10-8) struggled for the Braves, allowing six runs on nine hits over six innings in his second straight loss.
Atlanta was swept for the third consecutive series and went winless on a road trip of at least eight games for the first time since 1949.
"We've faced some pretty good teams on the road here, especially pitching wise, against us," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "We gotta go back home and start winning series again."
Seager's RBI single gave Seattle a 1-0 lead early. Ackley singled and Robinson Cano walked before Seager hit a two-out line drive into right field that scored Ackley.
The Braves took the lead with three runs in the third. Evan Gattis singled to start the inning. After B.J. Upton struck out, Ramiro Pena and Emilio Bonifacio hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. Young walked Tommy La Stella to put Gattis across, then Freeman doubled on a line drive to center. Pena and Bonifacio scored easily on the play, but Taylor's throw beat a sliding La Stella to the plate. Catcher Jesus Sucre jumped to catch the ball and landed with his left foot in front of the plate, blocking La Stella from touching home as he applied the tag. Young ended the inning with a strikeout of Justin Upton.
The Mariners responded with four runs of their own in the home half. Ackley started the scoring with a leadoff homer. Teheran got Cano to fly out and Morales to strike out, but then gave up consecutive singles to Seager and Taylor. Morrison smacked one over the wall in right to put the Mariners up 5-3.
Cano hit a leadoff double in Seattle's half of the fifth inning. Morales and Seager followed with a walk and a single, respectively, to load the bases. Taylor hit a sacrifice fly to left, scoring Cano. Morrison stepped to the plate with two men on and two outs again, but grounded into an inning-ending double play.
After Cano doubled off James Russell in the seventh, Morales grounded one into right field for an RBI single, stretching Seattle's lead to 7-3.
The Mariners' bullpen tossed four scoreless innings to complete the win.
