Cosart spins gem as Marlins silence Braves
Aug 31, 2014 - 4:59 AM Atlanta, GA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jarred Cosart pitched into the eighth inning Saturday night and the Miami Marlins shut out the Atlanta Braves 4-0.Cosart (3-1) struck out five, walked one and gave up seven hits, the last two on consecutive singles to start the eighth before he was taken out.
The Braves loaded the bases after that but the Miami bullpen escaped the jam.
The Marlins are 5 1/2 games out of a wild card spot in the NL.
"My goal is to pitch good every time out regardless of where we are in the standings," said Cosart. "It just makes it look a little better than I am able to do this more in the heat of the battle. I think that's when I pitch my best.
"The bullpen obviously kept the zero up there for me today. I think we have a team that grinds it out and we definitely have a shot to get in the playoffs and if we do we're going to be really dangerous because of that. I'm just going out there to continuing to do my part every five days. That's all I can do."
Donovan Solano had three hits, including a solo homer, and drove in two runs for the Marlins, who snapped a three-game losing streak.
Jason Heyward had three hits for the Braves, who had a three-game winning streak snapped.
Aaron Harang (10-9) went just 5 2/3 innings for Atlanta and gave up four runs -- three earned -- on seven hits and three walks.
"He only gave up one run in four innings and he almost got out of the last one. He battled," said Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez. "We just didn't get anything off Cosart."
Solano hit a one-out homer off Harang in the first inning, his third of the season, and the Marlins doubled their lead in the third when Giancarlo Stanton singled in Christian Yelich.
Yelich hit a ground-rule double in the fifth and scored on Solano's single and Jarrod Saltalamacchia came home on a passed ball in the sixth when Harang's looping breaking ball hit off the tip of Evan Gattis' glove, giving Miami a 4-0 lead.
Cosart slammed his glove in the dugout after giving up consecutive singles in the eighth inning. Atlanta loaded the bases with one out on Heyward's infield single off A.J. Ramos, who then struck out Andrelton Simmons.
Mike Dunn came in to get Freddie Freeman on a grounder to end the inning and Steve Cishek pitched the ninth.
