Papelbon booed, earns save as Phillies win
Sep 27, 2014 - 3:10 AM Philadelphia, PA (SportsNetwork.com) - The Philadelphia Phillies opened their final series of the season with a 5-4 come-from-behind win over the Atlanta Braves.Marlon Byrd drove in the go-ahead run with a groundout in the seventh after the Phillies erased a 4-0 deficit.
After rookie Ken Giles pitched a scoreless eighth, the focus turned to how the Philadelphia fans would greet closer Jonathan Papelbon in his first appearance back at Citizens Bank Park.
Papelbon earned a seven-game suspension for his action after blowing a save against Miami on Sept. 14. He appeared to direct a crotch-grab at jeering fans behind the Phillies' dugout as he left the field.
To the surprise of no one, Papelbon entered to a chorus of boos from the home crowd on Friday night. He gave up a one-out double to B.J. Upton, but was able to record his 39th save of the season.
"(Papelbon) is a professional, he served his suspension. He's a professional about going about his business and being ready to close for us," said Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg.
The Braves owned a 2-0 lead four batters into the game. After Philadelphia starter Jerome Williams gave up consecutive hits, Freddie Freeman plated a run with a groundout to second base and Justin Upton collected his career-high 100th RBI with a single.
Chris Johnson hit a two-run homer in the fourth off Williams, who hadn't allowed an earned run in his previous two outings. Williams went six innings and left after the Phillies pulled even against Atlanta starter Ervin Santana.
The Phillies got on the board in the fifth via a fielder's choice, then scored three times in the sixth. Santana gave up four straight two-out hits before his wild pitch allowed the tying run to score.
"There were a couple of balls that looked like we got caught by surprise. We let them back in the game in that inning," said Atlanta manager Fredi Gonzalez.
Chasen Shreve got the final out in the sixth, and Jordan Walden (0-2) came on to pitch the seventh. Carlos Ruiz drew a leadoff walk, went to third on a Ryan Howard double and scored on Byrd's grounder to second.
Luis Garcia (1-0) picked up the win after pitching the seventh.
Game Notes
B.J. Upton broke the Braves' single-season strikeout record on Friday night, when he went down swinging in the second inning. It was the 172nd strikeout for Upton, one more than Dan Uggla's previous record of 171 set last season ... Center fielder Ben Revere hit his 160th single of the season, the most by a Phillie since Dave Cash had 162 in 1976 ... The Phillies announced Friday that assistant general manager Marti Wolever will not return in 2015.
