Smyly shines again as Rays top Orioles
Aug 28, 2014 - 4:45 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Drew Smyly tossed seven solid innings and the Tampa Bay Rays held off the Baltimore Orioles, 3-1, in the third test of a four-game series.Smyly (9-10) gave up one run on two hits while striking out six. In his previous start on Friday, Smyly threw his first complete game in an 8-0 defeat of Toronto, retiring the final 19 batters.
"It's really encouraging to get off to a good start," said Smyly. "Really since the All-Star break I've felt like I have turned the page and done pretty well."
Ben Zobrist, Wil Myers and Matt Joyce each drove in a run for the Rays, who bounced back after losing the first two games of this set.
Chris Davis hit a solo homer for the Orioles, who lead the Yankees by six games for first place in the AL East. Kevin Gausman (7-6) allowed three runs -- two earned -- on six hits over four innings.
"It's definitely different being a starter this year," said Gausman. "I feel fine, my arm feels fine. I'll never use that as an excuse."
The Rays jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first. Zobrist doubled to right, moved to third on a wild pitch and beat the throw home on Joyce's fielder's choice. Evan Longoria and James Loney followed with back-to-back singles that would have load the bases had Longoria not continued to third, which was a problem because Joyce was already there. After Longoria was tagged out, Myers hit a bloop single to right to plate Joyce.
Each team scored once in the second. Ryan Hanigan reached on J.J. Hardy's throwing error, advanced to third on Desmond Jennings' double down the right- field line and crossed the plate on Zobrist's sacrifice fly.
Davis homered to right-center field in the bottom half of the frame.
Baltimore's next hit didn't come until the sixth. Steve Pearce hit a two-out single to extend his hitting streak to 10 games. He stole second before Adam Jones struck out swinging.
Brad Boxberger tossed a scoreless eighth and Jake McGee pitched a perfect ninth to earn his 15th save and complete the two-hitter.
