Gonzalez, O's blank Reds

Sep 4, 2014 - 2:20 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - Miguel Gonzalez tossed the first shutout of his career and the Baltimore Orioles blanked the Cincinnati Reds, 6-0, in the middle test of a three-game set.

Gonzalez (8-7) struck out eight, scattered four hits and walked one for the Orioles, who have won eight of their last 10 games. Gonzalez fired 83 of his 117 pitches for strikes.

"(Miguel) is such a team guy, he's such a professional. That was a professional outing," Orioles manager Buck Showalter said. "He had a lot of things working for him tonight."

Chris Davis smacked a two-run homer, while Jonathan Schoop and David Lough added solo shots in the triumph.

Dylan Axelrod (1-1) surrendered four runs on five hits over six frames for Cincinnati, which has dropped four of its last five contests.

"He made a couple of mistakes that got hit out of the ballpark," Reds manager Bryan Price said of Axelrod. "Unfortunately, we didn't have any offense."

Baltimore plated a run in the third, three in the fourth and two more in the seventh.

Neither team recorded a hit until Schoop launched his solo shot into the Reds bullpen in left-center with two outs in the third.

Lough led off the fourth by blasting a homer onto the concourse in right- center. Nelson Cruz hit a one-out double and Davis followed by cracking his two-run blast the opposite way into the seats in left-center.

J.J. Hardy and Kelly Johnson coaxed walks to begin the seventh and both runners moved up a base on a Caleb Joseph fly out. Schoop brought them both home with a double down the left-field line.
