Rays score 3 in 8th, blank Orioles

Sep 6, 2014 - 5:31 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Yunel Escobar drove in the winning run in the eighth inning and the Tampa Bay Rays took a 3-0 win over the Baltimore Orioles to open a three-game set.

This game was scoreless until the eighth as both starting pitchers were effective in shutting down the offenses.

Evan Longoria led off the eighth with a single against Ryan Webb (3-3) and Wil Myers followed with a base hit to bring in Evan Meek from the bullpen.

Following a walk to James Loney, Escobar beat out an infield single and Longoria scored the first run. Logan Forsythe grounded into a force out, but Ryan Hanigan followed with a two-run single for the 3-0 lead.

Jake McGee pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his 16th save of the year.

Alex Cobb went seven innings and scattered six hits and a walk while striking out six for the Rays, who had lost six of eight coming into the series. Brad Boxberger (4-1) pitched a flawless eighth for the win.

"They were taking a lot of good pitches. That forced me to make more pitches in the zone with my fastball," Cobb said.

Adam Jones had two of the six hits for the AL East-leading Orioles, who had won seven of eight coming in. Wei-Yin Chen allowed four hits and three walks while striking out three in six innings of work.

"One run with the way they were pitching, the way they were with their bullpen was going to be tough," O's manager Buck Showalter said.

Baltimore left men on first and second in the second inning, while Tampa left the bags loaded in the home half.

David DeJesus worked a one-out walk in the Tampa seventh and wound up at third after a groundout and a wild pitch, but Matt Joyce flied out to end the frame.
