Ortiz hits 2 HR, lifts Red Sox over Orioles
Sep 20, 2014 - 5:01 AM Baltimore, MD (SportsNetwork.com) - David Ortiz's two-run home run in the 10th inning lifted the Boston Red Sox to a 5-3 win over the Baltimore Orioles in the opener of a three-game set. With Darren O'Day (5-2) on the mound, Xander Bogaerts reached base on a bad throw from Kelly Johnson, and Ortiz followed with his second home run of the game for a 5-3 advantage.
"I'm a positive person and try to come in and get things down," said Ortiz. "I don't focus on how we've struggled this season, I just come in and do my best every night."
Edward Mujica pitched a scoreless home 10th to secure his seventh save of the season.
Ortiz finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI. Yoenis Cespedes also homered for the Red Sox, who had lost four of five coming in.
Allen Webster started for Boston and allowed a run on seven hits in 5 2/3 frames. Junichi Tazawa (4-3) got the win for tossing a scoreless ninth.
Nelson Cruz was 3-for-5 with an RBI for the AL-East champion Orioles, who had a four-game winning streak snapped. Kevin Gausman allowed three runs -- two earned -- on seven hits in five innings.
Baltimore got on the board in the third when it loaded the bases with two outs and Cruz hit a chopper to third. Garin Cecchini fielded the ball and threw to first, but it pulled Allen Craig off the bag and Cruz was safe, scoring Jonathan Schoop for a 1-0 lead.
Boston, though, got back-to-back home runs from Ortiz and Cespedes in the fourth to go up 2-1.
"I felt good but I just left some pitches up," said Gausman. "I never want to give up back-to-back home runs, but that one Cespedes hit, that was a pretty line-drive home run."
The Red Sox added another run in the fifth as Mookie Betts singled with one out and scored when Ortiz singled later in the inning.
However, the Orioles tied the game in the seventh. With Craig Breslow on the mound and two outs, Alejandro De Aza doubled and Delmon Young followed with a triple to right-center. Steve Pearce then reached base on a Bogaerts throwing error that allowed Young to score and tie the game.
Game Notes
Ortiz eclipsed 100 RBIs for the eight time in his career. His 34 home runs on the season is the most since he hit 35 in 2007 ... Baltimore still leads the season series, 10-7.
