Jays get better of Orioles again
Sep 28, 2014 - 5:14 AM Toronto, ON (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Reyes finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, as Toronto topped Baltimore, 4-2, in the second of three between the clubs.Kevin Pillar added two hits and crossed home twice, while Steve Tolleson posted an RBI double for the Blue Jays, who have taken the first two in the series along with six of eight overall.
J.A. Happ (11-11) worked 6 1/3 innings for the win, giving up just two runs on four hits.
"Over the course of the season I was able to make adjustments and I think that helped (me go deeper in games) and be healthy and go out there every fifth day," said Happ.
Casey Janssen had a quiet ninth to notch his 25th save.
Adam Jones homered and Delmon Young knocked in the other run for the AL East- champion Orioles, who have lost three in a row and five of seven as they gear up for their second playoff appearance in three years.
"I think we have the luxury that (guys) can take time off to stay healthy for the postseason," said Baltimore's Steve Pearce.
Wei-Yin Chen (16-6) took the loss, charged with five hits and three runs -- two earned -- over six full frames.
The Jays went up 3-1 in the fifth. Reyes singled and went to second on Alexi Casilla's throwing error, moved to third on a groundout and scored on O's first baseman Christian Walker's error.
Jones reached the seats in left-center field with two down in the sixth and the O's got back within a run.
Pillar bunted for a hit in the seventh and ended up at second on Brad Brach's throwing error, moved up on a sacrifice bunt, then scored on a Reyes fly to left. Initially called out due to a perfect throw by Jones, replay instead reversed the call and Toronto led 4-2.
Aaron Sanchez spelled Happ in the seventh and kept the Orioles off the board thanks to inducing an inning-ending double-play grounder from Caleb Joseph.
Baltimore seized momentum early, as Nelson Cruz tripled to start the second and scored when Young followed with a single.
Toronto picked up two in the home third, as Pillar singled, then back-to-back run-scoring doubles from Tolleson and Reyes followed.
Game Notes
Happ's 11 victories are his most since he finished 12-4 for the Phillies in 2009 ... Baltimore suffered just its third road series loss since the All-Star break ... Prior to the contest, the Orioles selected the contract of Casilla from Triple-A Norfolk and designated pitcher Preston Guilmet for assignment.
