Blue Jays rout Red Sox 14-1
Jul 29, 2014 - 7:16 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Melky Cabrera smacked a pair of homers, including a three-run shot as part of a nine-run sixth inning, as the Toronto Blue Jays routed the Boston Red Sox, 14-1, in the opener of a three-game set.Cabrera also launched a two-run blast, Ryan Goins went 4-for-5 with four RBI and scored a run and Munenori Kawasaki posted two hits, two RBI and three runs scored for the Blue Jays, who have won eight of their last 10 games.
R.A. Dickey (9-10) struck out 10 and allowed a run on three hits and a walk over seven innings to notch the win.
Clay Buchholz (5-7) surrendered seven runs on seven hits and four walks over five-plus frames for Boston, which has dropped six of its last seven games.
"It was an ugly night from the mound," said Red Sox manager John Farrell.
Toronto opened the scoring in the first when Jose Reyes walked and Cabrera followed by cracking his two-run shot over the low wall in right-center. Goins' two-run single in the fourth made it 4-0.
The Blue Jays sent 14 men to the plate and posted eight hits in the sixth.
Kawasaki and Josh Thole singled to put runners on the corners to lead off the sixth before Goins doubled into left-center to score Kawasaki. Anthony Gose walked to load the bases and Reyes brought home Thole with a sacrifice fly.
Cabrera then drove his three-run blast over the Green Monster in left. Jose Bautista singled, Juan Francisco coaxed a free pass and Colby Rasmus' two- bagger plated Bautista. A Kawasaki double scored Francisco and Rasmus. Thole's single put runners on the corners before Goins' RBI groundout pushed across Kawasaki to cap the scoring in the frame and give the Blue Jays a 13-0 advantage.
David Ortiz's RBI single in the home half got Boston on the board, but the Blue Jays got the run back in the seventh when Cabrera scored on a wild pitch to make it 14-1.
