Blue Jays complete 3-game sweep of Red Sox

Jul 31, 2014 - 2:42 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dioner Navarro had three RBI singles and the Toronto Blue Jays wrapped up a three-game sweep at Fenway Park with a 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday.

Juan Francisco knocked in two runs for the Blue Jays, who have won five in a row and eight of their last nine.

Mark Buehrle (11-7) bounced back from a bad outing against the Yankees in the Bronx last week to break a nine-start winless streak. Buehrle, 0-6 since a win over Kansas City on June 1, gave up just one run on six hits and a walk in 6 2/3 innings.

The Red Sox, mired in a 1-8 funk, recalled righty Brandon Workman from Triple- A Pawtucket to pitch for ace Jon Lester, who was given the day off amid rising speculation he will be traded before Thursday's non-waiver deadline.

Workman (1-4) lost his fourth straight decision for Boston after allowing five runs -- two earned -- on four hits and four walks.

Red Sox manager John Farrell pinch-hit for right fielder Shane Victorino in the fifth inning after he saw "a little bit of change in his gait."

Victorino, who spent two months on the disabled list with a right hamstring strain, was removed for precautionary reasons only, Farrell said. He said Victorino wanted to remain in the game.

The Red Sox made a trade Wednesday, but not involving Lester. They dealt lefty Felix Doubront to the Chicago Cubs for a player to be named later.

Workman walked the first two batters, Jose Reyes and Melky Cabrera, who both scored to give Toronto a 2-0 lead. Navarro hit an RBI single and Francisco's fielder's choice scored the other run.

Farrell said it was Workman's walks, above anything else, that contributed to the loss.

"They were able to bunch seeing-eye hits (together) ... but when you look back at the runs allowed, it centers around the walks," he said.

Workman bounced a throw past first base on Reyes' sacrifice bunt in the fifth inning, allowing Anthony Gose to score from second. Navarro and Francisco added RBI singles to give the Blue Jays a 5-0 lead.

The Red Sox got a run back in the bottom of the inning after Xander Bogaerts led off with a double and scored on Christian Vazquez's ground-rule double to right-center.

Navarro delivered his third RBI hit off Craig Breslow with the bases loaded in the sixth, but Cabrera was thrown out at home plate to end the inning.

Game Notes

The Red Sox were 1-for-11 with runners in scoring position and stranded eight men on base. They will remain at home for a three-game series against the Yankees ... Toronto will finish a 10-game road trip in Houston.
