Cespedes, Webster shine as Red Sox take down Angels
Aug 9, 2014 - 5:47 AM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yoenis Cespedes knocked in two runs and Mike Napoli homered to help the Boston Red Sox in a 4-2 win over the Los Angeles Angels on Friday.Dustin Pedroia went 2-for-5 with an RBI to back a strong outing from Allen Webster (2-1), who lasted a career-high 6 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on four hits and two walks.
"(Webster) was much more under control tonight."Red Sox manager John Farrell said. "He had three quality pitches that he showed. A strong performance on his part."
Jered Weaver (12-7) took the loss after going six innings and giving up four runs on seven hits and a pair of walks. The right-hander had been unbeaten in his previous nine starts and hadn't lost since June 16.
Mike Trout had the lone RBI for Los Angeles, which dropped its fourth straight game.
"We'll get through it," Trout said of the skid. "It's baseball and it's only August. There is still time before we start checking the scoreboard."
Coupled with an Oakland win, the Angels are now four games back of the A's for first place in the AL West.
Boston jumped out in front with a three-run third inning. Christian Vazquez doubled with one out and moved to third on Brock Holt's single to left. Dustin Pedroia singled home Vazquez and Cespedes doubled down the left-field line two batters later to chase a pair home.
Los Angeles answered with two in the home third, however. Efren Navarro walked and Chris Iannetta followed with a double into the left-field corner. Cespedes allowed the ball to bounce past him for an error which prompted Navarro to hustle home. Mike Trout hit a sacrifice fly to deep center two batters later to cut the deficit to 3-2.
Napoli clubbed his 14th homer of the season in the fifth to extend Boston's lead to 4-2.
Albert Pujols doubled with one out in the eighth, but was stranded on second after a flyout by Josh Hamilton and a groundout by Erick Aybar.
Koji Uehara came on to pitch the ninth and was immediately aided by a well- timed, leaping catch by center fielder Jackie Bradley Jr. for the first out of the inning. David Freese then doubled before Uehara got Navarro to ground out. Following a walk to Iannetta, Uehara struck out Kole Calhoun to nail down his 24th save of the season.
