Cespedes' blast gives Red Sox series win over Angels

Aug 10, 2014 - 11:47 PM Anaheim, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Yoenis Cespedes's first home run as a member of the Red Sox broke a scoreless tie and gave Boston a 3-1 victory over the Angels in the rubber match of a three-game series.

Cespedes' three-run blast in the eighth inning made a winner of Rubby De La Rosa (4-4), who held a potent but predictably tired Angels lineup to one run over seven-plus frames.

"Everything was working," De La Rosa said. "I kept them off balance."

The Angels managed just six hits after winning an epic 19-inning marathon that ended 12 hours before Sunday's first pitch.

Boston only recorded four hits but two came in the deciding frame.

Joe Smith (4-1), who was riding a 23-outing scoreless streak, put two runners on in front of Cespedes, one stemming from Efren Navarro's error on a ball hit by Brock Holt and the other on Dustin Pedroia's base hit.

Cespedes sent an 0-1 offering into the bullpen beyond the left-field wall to get the Red Sox on the board, and after Trout sent one to the same spot in the bottom half, Edward Mujica bridged the gap to the ninth with three quick outs.

Koji Uehara worked around a one-out single to collect his 25th save and close out the three-hour, three-minute affair.

Saturday's duel lasted 6 hours, 31 minutes.

Hector Santiago did not factor in the decision despite scattering two hits and three walks over six scoreless innings for the Angels, who went 0-for-6 with runners in scoring position en route to their fifth loss in six games.

"We're not swinging the bats well," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "There's improvement we need from players."

The Red Sox are 39-0 when leading after eight innings ... Cespedes has reached base in all eight of his games since coming over in a trade with the Athletics ... Before the game, the Angels announced pitcher Tyler Skaggs will undergo Tommy John surgery to repair a torn UCL in his left elbow.
