Mariners power past Red Sox

Aug 24, 2014 - 5:26 AM Boston, MA (SportsNetwork.com) - Dustin Ackley hit a three-run homer during a seven-run fourth inning as the Seattle Mariners beat the Boston Red Sox, 7-3, in the middle test of a three-game series.

Chris Denorfia, Chris Taylor and Jesus Sucre each drove in a run for the Mariners, who hold the second wild card spot in the American League.

"We're playing with a lot of confidence," said Seattle third baseman Kyle Seager. "We like our team, we feel good about ourselves."

Chris Young got the start for Seattle and gave up three runs on seven hits with five walks over 3 2/3 innings. Tom Wilhelmsen (2-2) pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings to pick up the win.

Yoenis Cespedes, David Ross and Mike Napoli each had an RBI for the Red Sox, who have lost seven in a row. Brandon Workman (1-8) allowed seven runs on 10 hits over 3 1/3 innings.

"He gets through the first three innings in good shape and in the fourth inning where things started to slip away from him, he still pitched ahead in the count. Unfortunately, (he) was unable to put a number of hitters away in that fourth inning," Boston manager John Farrell said about Workman.

Red Sox slugger David Ortiz left the game with a left elbow contusion. He was hit by a fastball from Mariners reliever Charlie Furbush in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Ortiz initially stayed in the game, but was replaced by pinch-hitter Kelly Johnson in the bottom of the ninth.

Boston pitcher Alex Wilson hit Robinson Cano in the backside in the top of the seventh. Home plate umpire Angel Hernandez then issued warnings to both sides.

The Mariners took control with a seven-run fourth, erasing a 3-0 deficit. Kendrys Morales and Seager singled before Denorfia's RBI double to left. After Endy Chavez struck out swinging, Taylor hit a run-scoring single to right. Denorfia then raced home on a wild pitch.

Taylor stole third and scored on Sucre's single to left. Austin Jackson singled prior to Ackley's blast down the right-field line to cap the burst and give Seattle a deciding four-run cushion.

Boston left the bases loaded in the bottom half of the frame, then stranded a man on third in the sixth and one on second in the eighth.

Boston scored once in each of the first three innings. Brock Holt singled and Dustin Pedroia doubled to start the first and Cespedes' sacrifice fly made it 1-0.

Mookie Betts led off the second with a walk, stole second and raced home on Ross' double to left.

Napoli's sacrifice fly plated Cespedes in the third. Cespedes reached on a double and moved to third on Jackson's fielding error.
