McCann, Kuroda lead Yankees over Red Sox
Sep 4, 2014 - 2:46 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Brian McCann had four hits and three RBI and Hiroki Kuroda pitched seven strong innings to lead the New York Yankees to a 5-1 win over the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday night.McCann's four hits included a two-run homer that gave the Yankees all the runs they needed to snap a three-game losing streak, which included a 9-4 setback in the opener of this three-game series on Tuesday.
"He had a great night swinging the bat getting us that 2-0 lead," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said of McCann. "Then being on base four times. He had a great night."
Kuroda (10-8) struck out eight, walked none and gave up four hits and a run, improving to 3-0 in his last four starts. Relievers Dellin Betances and David Robertson combined with Kuroda to strike out 12.
McCann experienced both the highs and lows of being a catcher in the span of two innings.
The good? His upper-deck blast to right field in the second inning off Anthony Ranaudo to give the Yankees a 2-0 lead.
The bad? He took a foul tip in the groin with slugger Yoenis Cespedes at the plate in the fourth. McCann needed a few well-deserved minutes to shake it off before crouching back down behind the plate.
Jacoby Ellsbury added a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to make it 3-0.
Ranaudo (3-1) went just 5 1/3, giving up six hits and two walks to suffer his first loss in four major-league starts.
"On a night where Kuroda actually just shut us down, the amount of runs were really insurmountable," said Boston manager John Farrell.
Kuroda coasted through five innings, giving up singles to Christian Vazquez in the third and Daniel Nava in the fifth. He picked Nava off at first base and so faced just one batter over the minimum until he hit Jemile Weeks in the back of the right knee with one out in the sixth.
Weeks came around to score on Brock Holt's double over Brett Gardner's head in left field, drawing the Red Sox within 3-1.
Ellsbury tripled in the seventh inning and scored on Gardner's single and McCann hit an RBI single to stretch New York's lead to 5-1.
Game Notes
Derek Jeter and Gardner hit back-to-back singles for the Yankees in the first inning but were both tagged out during an attempted double-steal. Jeter was caught too far off third base as Gardner tried to escape a rundown between first and second, and the throw back to second got Gardner on a slide ... It was McCann's 17th homer of the season.
