Wainwright, Cardinals edge Cubs

Jul 27, 2014 - 11:43 PM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Adam Wainwright pitched seven strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals grabbed a 1-0 win over the Chicago Cubs in the finale of a three-game set.

Wainwright (13-5) gave up five hits and three walks while striking out three for the Cardinals, who took the final two of this series. Matt Holliday's solo home run in the first proved to be the only run in the game.

"They hit some balls hard but the guys played some great defense," said Wainwright. "I was able to make some pitches when I needed to and I had a good, wide target behind the plate."

Kyle Hendricks (1-1) allowed the one run on seven hits with two strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings for the Cubs, who have lost four of their last five games.

"The big picture is that I think the way we're competing and holding our own on a daily basis shows the mentality of these young men is in the right place," said Chicago manager Rick Renteria.

Holliday's home run came with two outs in the opening frame, as he ripped a 2-1 fastball over the center field wall for his 10th of the season.

Wainwright gave up a leadoff double to Welington Castillo in the third, but set down the next three batters to keep the Cubs off the board.

The Cubs had men at the corners in the fifth, but Hendricks struck out and Wainwright benefited from a double play in the sixth to keep the game scoreless.

Wainwright stranded another pair of runners in the second, while Kevin Siegrist pitched a 1-2-3 eighth.

Trevor Rosenthal pitched around a two-out single in the ninth to earn his 32nd save of the season.
