Cubs outlast Rockies in 16 innings, Baker winning pitcher
Jul 30, 2014 - 6:55 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Backup catcher John Baker pitched the 16th inning, then scored the winning run in the home half as the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies, 4-3, in the second of a four-game set.Baker (1-0) allowed a one-out walk in the top of the 16th, but then got Cristhian Adames to hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
With Tyler Matzek (2-5) on the mound, Baker walked and was moved over on a sac bunt from Emilio Bonifacio. Arismendy Alcantara was then hit by a pitch and Anthony Rizzo hit a bloop single to shallow left.
Starlin Castro then lifted a fly ball to right that was caught, but Baker easily scored to end the marathon.
At 6 hours and 27 minutes, it was the longest game, time-wise, in the history of both clubs. The contest didn't finish until around 1:30 a.m. local time.
Bonifacio went 4-for-7 with a two-run home run and two runs scored, while Rizzo also drove in a run for the Cubs, who have won their past two.
Justin Morneau was activated from the 15-day disabled list and drove in two. Nolan Arenado also had an RBI for the Rockies, who have dropped three straight.
Colorado starter Jorge De La Rosa went six innings and gave up three runs on six hits with a walk and seven strikeouts, while Chicago starter Edwin Jackson allowed three runs on six hits in just four innings of work.
Colorado had runners at second and third with one out in the 10th and DJ LeMahieu tried to lay down a bunt for the suicide squeeze, but missed the pitch and Morneau was caught in a rundown. LeMahieu then struck out to end the inning.
Chicago also had a chance in the 10th, as Castro singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. Welington Castillo then launched a pitch to center that had the looks of a game-winning hit, but Charlie Blackmon dove and made the fully-extended catch to keep the game going.
The Rockies scored three runs in the first inning on an RBI double from Arenado and a two-run double by Morneau for a 3-0 lead.
"You go 15 innings without scoring a run you don't deserve to win," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said.
Chicago got one back in the home half of the first on an RBI single from Rizzo.
The Cubs then tied the game in the fourth as Junior Lake was hit by a pitch and Bonifacio later launched his second home run of the season for a 3-3 game.
