Baez breaks through as Cubs top Brewers

Sep 27, 2014 - 6:09 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Javier Baez was 3-for-5 with two RBI and as many runs scored as Chicago claimed a 6-4 decision over Milwaukee in the opener of a three-game season-ending set.

Jorge Soler knocked in a pair of runs, while Chris Coghlan added a solo homer and crossed home three times for the Cubs, who have won three in a row.

Neil Ramirez (3-3) tossed a scoreless seventh for the win. Hector Rondon closed out the contest with a scoreless ninth to earn his 28th save. Eric Jokisch was yanked after allowing three hits and two runs -- one earned -- while walking four over four innings.

"It was a tough one," said Jokisch. "I'm a command guy usually, a strike thrower. That just wasn't happening today, but I battled through it."

Jean Segura finished 3-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored for the Brewers, losers in seven of their last nine. Carlos Gomez and Rickie Weeks also knocked in a run each.

Jimmy Nelson (2-9) gave up six hits and five runs over his 4 1/3-frame outing.

"He made some great pitches, then all of a sudden its up at the thigh and down the middle," said Brewers manager Ron Roenicke. "They took some good swings at it."

Logan Watkins kicked off the fifth with a pinch-double and scored two batters later on a Baez single, then Anthony Rizzo doubled off Marco Estrada to give Chicago a 5-2 advantage.

Carlos Gomez singled home Hector Gomez in the home sixth, but Soler plated Coghlan in the seventh and the Cubs had their three-run lead back.

A fielder's choice from Weeks in the eighth allowed Segura to cross home and pull the Brewers within 6-4, but Ryan Braun fanned to end Pedro Strop's inning of relief and Rondon retired the side in order in the ninth.

Coghlan's first-inning homer gave the Cubs an early lead, then Segura went deep to tie the game in the bottom of the second.

A Baez RBI single and groundout from Soler staked the visitors to a 3-1 margin in the top of the third, before Jonathan Lucroy reached on an error which plated Carlos Gomez in the home half.
