ChiSox rally past Astros
Jul 19, 2014 - 4:53 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler Flowers' seventh-inning RBI double lifted the Chicago White Sox to a 3-2 win over the Houston Astros in the opener of a three-game set from U.S. Cellular Field.Alejandro De Aza's one-out single in the home seventh against Scott Feldman (4-7) set the stage for the game-winning RBI by Flowers. De Aza stole second to put himself in scoring position for Flowers, who ripped a 3-1 offering to the wall in left-center.
"Big win," said White Sox manager Robin Ventura. "You start the second half looking for nice things to happen. For (Flowers), that's a big one."
Feldman was charged with all three runs on seven hits over seven innings to absorb the loss.
Jose Quintana (6-7) yielded a pair of runs on three hits for Chicago, which improved to 4-0 against Houston with him on the mound in his career. Quintana struck out eight and walked two over five innings.
"It's a 3-2 ball game. Any time you play a game that close, it's one play here or there," said Houston manager Bo Porter. "They made more plays than we did."
Dayan Viciedo homered while rookie superstar Jose Abreu extended his hit streak to nine games. Abreu, who leads the majors with 29 home runs, has reached safely in 27 of his last 28 games.
Houston got off to a fast start, plating both of its runs in the top of the second inning. Matt Dominguez led off with a single to right. Jon Singleton followed with a single to right-center, and Dominguez scored on Viciedo's error in right. Singleton moved to third on the error and scored one batter later when Robbie Grossman grounded out to shortstop.
Feldman held the White Sox off the board until the sixth, but Viciedo made up for his earlier mistake by crushing the first pitch he saw out to center to tie the score.
Three White Sox relievers combined to toss four perfect innings, with Zach Putnam striking out two in the ninth to earn his second save.
Game Notes
