Iwakuma, M's top White Sox
Aug 9, 2014 - 6:18 AM Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) - Hisashi Iwakuma fired seven innings of one- run ball and the Seattle Mariners defeated the Chicago White Sox, 4-1, in the second test of a four-game set.Iwakuma (10-6) scattered five hits and struck out three for the Mariners, who have won four in a row and five of their last six.
"He wasn't as sharp as he usually is, but he gave us seven sharp innings," Seattle manager Lloyd McClendon said of Iwakuma. "He certainly knows how to pitch when he doesn't have his best stuff."
Mike Zunino smacked a three-run homer, while Chris Taylor posted three hits and scored a run in the victory.
Fernando Rodney tossed a 1-2-3 ninth to notch his 32nd save of the year.
Jose Quintana (6-8) allowed four runs -- two earned -- on seven hits and two walks over 5 2/3 frames for Chicago, which has dropped four straight and six of its last seven contests.
Dayan Viciedo clubbed a solo shot in defeat.
The White Sox led 1-0 before the Mariners surged ahead with a four-run fifth.
Chris Denorfia worked a leadoff walk, Logan Morrison reached on a fielding error and Zunino cracked his three-run shot the opposite way to right. Kendrys Morales added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to give the Mariners a 4-1 lead.
"Q was pitching great and then walk, error does him in," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Quintana.
Chicago, who recorded just one hit the rest of the way, never put a runner in scoring position.
Viciedo's solo blast to right opened the scoring for the White Sox in the fourth.
Game Notes
Seattle went 3-for-9 with runners in scoring position ... The White Sox activated pitcher Zach Putnam off the 15-day disabled list on Friday ... Zunino's blast was his 18th of the year.
