Yanks top ChiSox on Prado's hit in 9th
Aug 23, 2014 - 5:33 AM Bronx, NY (SportsNetwork.com) - Martin Prado singled up the middle with two outs and the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth to lift the New York Yankees over the Chicago White Sox, 4-3, in the opener of a three-game series. The White Sox sent Daniel Webb (5-4) to the mound in the ninth. Ichiro Suzuki singled before Webb got two quick outs. Webb then intentionally walked Jacoby Ellsbury, and Mark Teixeira worked a walk to fill the bags for Prado, who hit a two-run homer earlier in the game.
"We've been grinding it out," said Prado. "This is a great week for the team. We all perform as a team and that's all that matters right now."
Ellsbury went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored for the Yankees, who moved within eight games of the Orioles for first place in the AL East.
New York starter Shane Greene allowed three runs on nine hits with seven strikeouts over five-plus innings. David Robertson (2-4) got the win after pitching a scoreless ninth.
Jose Abreu hit a three-run homer for the White Sox, who have lost four in a row. John Danks gave up three runs on six hits over five-plus innings.
"You have to be able to add on especially when you jump out really early," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. "We have to be able to execute."
Abreu hit a three-run homer in the first. Alejandro De Aza and Carlos Sanchez singled before Abreu's blast to left.
After leaving the bases loaded in the second, the Yankees got on the board in the third. Ellsbury singled and crossed the plate on Prado's homer to left.
New York tied the game in the fifth. Brett Gardner was hit by a pitch and Derek Jeter singled to put two men on with no outs. Ellsbury followed with an RBI double to right. But Danks settled down and retired the next three batters to keep it a 3-3 game.
