White Sox top error-prone Tigers

Sep 1, 2014 - 5:46 AM Chicago, IL (SportsNetwork.com) - Jose Quintana tossed seven strong innings and received plenty of early offensive support in the Chicago White Sox' 6-2 triumph over the Detroit Tigers at U.S. Cellular Field.

Quintana (7-10) held the Tigers to a pair of runs on six hits and a walk, with his White Sox teammates putting up five runs in the first two innings to help the lefty record just his second win since late June.

Chicago pounded out 12 hits despite trading away its second regular in as many days prior to the game, sending slugger Adam Dunn to Oakland in exchange for a minor league pitcher. The White Sox shipped outfielder Alejandro De Aza to Baltimore on Saturday.

Avisail Garcia led Chicago at the plate by going 2-for-4 with two RBI, while Adam Eaton and Carlos Sanchez had two hits and two runs scored to help the White Sox earn a split of this four-game set.

"We're not a team of what our record shows. We all know that in here," said Eaton. "Hopefully we'll continue to get better and be a spoiler this upcoming month."

Detroit's Rick Porcello (15-9) failed in his attempt to become the American League's first 16-game winner this season after being tagged for six runs and 11 hits over 6 2/3 innings. Three of those runs were unearned, however, due to four errors the Tigers committed on the day.

Ian Kinsler and Victor Martinez both drove in runs for Detroit, which fell a half-game behind the Royals for first place in the AL Central. Cleveland's game at Kansas City was suspended in the 10th inning on Sunday.

"We made it tough on Rick today," said Kinsler. "We gotta keep that ball rolling. We're in a race so we have to go into Cleveland ready to play."

The White Sox jumped all over Porcello early, with Eaton greeting the right- hander with a leadoff double and Garcia later drawing a two-out walk to extend the opening inning for Conor Gillaspie, who singled past Detroit shortstop Eugenio Suarez to knock in the game's first run.

Suarez bobbled a grounder from the next batter, Dayan Viciedo, and Chicago manager Robin Ventura successfully challenged an out call at second on the play to put the Sox up 2-0 when Garcia crossed the plate.

More defensive issues from the Tigers enabled Chicago to extend the margin in the second. Don Kelly misplayed Sanchez's chopper to first that brought home Leury Garcia, who reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to third on another Eaton double. Third baseman Nick Castellanos then botched Jose Abreu's ground ball as Eaton scored to make it 4-0, and Garcia followed with a single to produce another run.

Porcello held Chicago in check over the next three frames, and the Tigers finally got to Quintana when Rajai Davis and Kinsler came through with back- to-back doubles to begin the sixth. Martinez laced a single to left center two batters later to easily score Kinsler and bring Detroit within 5-2.

Sanchez singled in the White Sox' half of the sixth, however, and scored all the way from first when Garcia drilled a double into the gap in left center.

The Tigers didn't have a baserunner the rest of the way, with Zach Putnam and Jake Petricka backing up Quintana's 1-2-3 seventh with a perfect inning each.

Game Notes

The Tigers held reigning AL MVP Miguel Cabrera out of the lineup after he exited Saturday's second game of a doubleheader with a sore right ankle ... Quintana had gone 0-3 with two no-decisions over his previous five starts. His most recent win also came against the Tigers, an 11-4 verdict in Detroit on July 29 ... Abreu extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a single in the fourth inning ... The White Sox left 11 men on base and went just 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position.
