Garcia, White Sox rally past Rays
Sep 20, 2014 - 5:43 AM St. Petersburg, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Avisail Garcia's two-run double in a four-run fifth inning led the Chicago White Sox to a 4-3 victory over the Tampa Bay Rays in the opener of a three-game set on Friday.Alexei Ramirez finished with three hits, an RBI and a run scored, while Jose Abreu brought in the other run for the White Sox, who had veteran first baseman Paul Konerko return to the lineup after a 14-game absence due to a broken hand.
Jose Quintana (9-10) combated early adversity to win his third straight decision, allowing just three runs -- one earned -- on nine hits with no walks and six strikeouts over 7 1/3 innings.
Logan Forsythe drove in all three runs for Tampa Bay, which was eliminated from playoff contention with the loss.
Jeremy Hellickson (1-4) was tagged with the loss after giving up four runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 frames.
"I put a lot of runners on with two outs," Hellickson said.
Chicago's offense came alive in the fifth. Marcus Semien worked a leadoff walk and Adam Eaton doubled to left before back-to-back RBI singles from Ramirez and Abreu got the White Sox within one.
Two batters later, Garcia stroked a liner over the head of left fielder Ben Zobrist for a two-run double and a 4-3 lead.
In the seventh, Kevin Kiermaier hit a two-out single and hustled past third after Semien dropped Zobrist's fly ball in shallow right field. Semien quickly recovered to throw Kiermaier out at the plate to end the frame.
Jake Petricka retired the final two batters of the eighth. Eric Surkamp induced a quick fly out to start the ninth before Zach Putnam stranded men on first and second with two strikeouts for his sixth save of the season.
The Rays took a quick 2-0 lead in the first. Evan Longoria hit a two-out single, Wil Myers reached second on Semien's fielding error and Forsythe brought them both home with an RBI double to left.
Forsythe added to Tampa Bay's lead to start the fourth with his sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to left-center field.
"After the homer, he really settled down," White Sox manager Robin Ventura said of Quintana. "He was aggressive. He seems to always get stronger as the game goes along."
