Reds hold Brewers to two hits in win
Sep 14, 2014 - 6:52 AM Milwaukee, WI (SportsNetwork.com) - Billy Hamilton hit a two-run triple and three Cincinnati pitchers combined to toss a two-hitter in the Reds' 5-1 win over Milwaukee.Todd Frazier had three hits and scored two runs for the Reds, who have won four of their last five games.
David Holmberg (1-1) picked up his first major league win after tossing six solid innings. He gave up both Milwaukee hits, a solo home run by Aramis Ramirez and an infield single by Hector Gomez.
"I just believe this September is hugely important for David simply to have the opportunity to pitch and get more comfortable as we head into 2015," Reds manager Bryan Price said.
Sam LeCure worked two frames and Jumbo Diaz pitched the ninth.
Yovani Gallardo (8-10) allowed two runs on four hits over six innings for the Brewers, who have lost Gallardo's last eight starts at Miller Park.
"We know we need to swing it better, it's hard to say what it is that's going to take us to bust out and swing the bat well," Brewers manager Ron Roenicke said.
Despite having its winning streak snapped at three games, Milwaukee stayed 1 1/2 games behind Pittsburgh for the NL's second Wild Card spot.
The Reds were hitless through the first three innings, but loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth on two singles and a walk.
Brandon Phillips then drew a walk to force in the game's first run and Frazier came home on Jay Bruce's sacrifice fly to left field.
Ramirez led off the bottom of the fourth with a shot over the left-center field wall, and it remained a 2-1 game until the seventh.
Pinch-hitter Jason Bourgeois beat out a slow chopper to keep the top of the seventh alive for Hamilton, who drove a Zach Duke pitch into the right-center field gap.
Devin Mesoraco added an RBI single in the eighth.
