Cabrera has four hits as Jays top Indians

Apr 19, 2014 - 6:52 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Melky Cabrera supplied four hits and a run as the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Cleveland Indians, 3-2, in the opener of a three-game set.

Munenori Kawasaki, Edwin Encarnacion, and Brett Lawrie each drove in a run for the Blue Jays, who snapped a two-game skid. Starting pitcher Drew Hutchison gave up two runs on eight hits with nine strikeouts across 5 1/3 innings.

Steve Delabar (1-0) retired the final two batters in the sixth after having men on first and third to earn the win. Sergio Santos picked up his fifth save of the season after issuing two walks and striking out two batters in a scoreless ninth.

"It got a little hairy there, but the bottom line is he got it done," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said of Santos.

Carlos Santana stroked a two-run homer and Jason Kipnis had two hits for the Indians, who have dropped three of their last four. Justin Masterson allowed two runs on six hits with nine strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings, but Marc Rzepczynski (0-1) was tagged with the loss after giving up a run on two hits in the seventh.

"We're just working out the kinks, having some fun. A lot of close games. I think you'll find as we continue to go, there's going to be a lot of great things coming," Masterson said.

Colby Rasmus doubled on a deep fly ball off the center-field wall and moved up to third on Masterson's wild pitch with one out in the fourth. Lawrie hit a short infield dribbler that scored Rasmus to give Toronto a 1-0 lead.

Kipnis reached first on an infield blooper that fooled shortstop Ryan Goins to lead off the sixth. Santana launched a fastball into the right field seats to put the Indians up 2-1. Two batters later, Asdrubal Cabrera made his way to third on a deep fly ball to center field to end Hutchison's outing, but was left stranded after Delabar entered the game.

Rzepczynski came in to pitch after Masterson issued a one-out walk to Goins in the seventh. He immediately gave up a single to Melky Cabrera. Kawasaki smoked a single up the middle to bring around Goins and tie the game at two.

Cody Allen entered the game with runners on first and second. The two runners advanced on a pickoff attempt by catcher Yan Gomes. Allen then walked Jose Bautista to load the bases in hopes of a double play, but Encarnacion softly lined to center field to bring home Cabrera and make it, 3-2. The rally concluded when Dioner Navarro grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Santos took the mound for the Blue Jays in the bottom of the ninth. Lonnie Chisenhall drove a deep flyball to the warning track in left field to lead off the frame.

Game Notes

Chisenhall extended his hit streak to eight games ... Brantley has hit safely in 10 straight games against the Blue Jays ... Masterson has allowed two earned runs or fewer in six consecutive starts against the Blue Jays dating back to 2012.
