Zunino powers Mariners past Indians

Aug 1, 2014 - 6:28 AM Cleveland, OH (SportsNetwork.com) - Mike Zunino's two-run, go-ahead homer in the eighth inning lifted the Seattle Mariners to a 6-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians in the rubber match of a three-game set.

Dustin Ackley hit a two-run homer, while Robinson Cano and Logan Morrison each drove in a run for the Mariners, who bounced back from Corey Kluber's dominant performance in Tuesday's 2-0 loss, where Seattle managed just three hits.

Joe Beimel (3-1) earned the win retiring the final batter in the seventh inning. Starter Chris Young lasted 5 1/3 innings and allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks.

"We won the game and the guys picked me up," Young said. "I wasn't sharp tonight, I fell behind too many hitters. But the guys showed the character of our club and kept battling. Zunino had the big swing late. It was a great win for us, a great series. Hopefully we'll build some momentum from this."

Jason Kipnis supplied a two-run homer and scored twice for Cleveland, which has dropped six of its last eight. Carlos Santana also drove in two runs.

Bryan Shaw (4-3) was tagged with the loss after giving up Zunino's homer in the eighth. Starter Zach McAllister tossed just 3 1/3 innings, where he gave up four runs on eight hits.

"When Zach's looked good, he's down with his fastball," Indians manager Terry Francona said. "And even when he doesn't really locate in or out, if he's down, he's OK. When he's up, balls start to get elevated. And they were getting under some of the offspeed pitches."

Zunino gave the Mariners a 6-5 lead in the eighth by crushing a two-run homer to left off Shaw that scored Kyle Seager, who walked to open the frame.

Fernando Rodney tossed a scoreless ninth to earn his 30th save of the season.

The Indians opened the scoring in the first. Kipnis doubled and came home two batters later on Michael Brantley's line-drive single to center.

Kendrys Morales doubled and Seager singled to open the second for Seattle. Two batters later, Morrison's sacrifice fly to right brought home Morales to tie the game.

The Mariners went ahead in the third after Ackley stroked a two-run shot off the top of the right-field wall and into the seats. Chris Taylor followed with a single and came home on Cano's double into the left-field corner, making it a 4-1 game.

Cleveland battled back to even the score at 4-4 in the home half. Kipnis launched Young's 3-2 fastball to right-center field for a two-run homer and Santana's sac fly scored Brantley, who tripled off the right-field wall in the previous at-bat.

Jose Ramirez hit a one-out single for Cleveland in the seventh and moved to second on Charlie Furbush's wild pitch. After Furbush walked Brantley, Santana greeted Danny Farquhar with an RBI base hit that trickled into left, giving Cleveland a 5-4 edge.
