Cashner, Padres top Rockies
Apr 17, 2014 - 6:09 AM San Diego, CA (SportsNetwork.com) - Andrew Cashner followed up a one-hit performance with another solid start to help the San Diego Padres to a 4-2 win over the Colorado Rockies.Cashner (2-1), who fanned 11 Detroit Tigers on Friday in a 6-0 win, struck out five and allowed two runs -- one earned -- on nine hits over 7 1/3 innings Wednesday.
"You know he worked his way through the game in a pitchers' duel," Padres manager Bud Black said. "(Jorge) De La Rosa hung in there with him. I thought Cash threw fine. He really made pitches when he needed to. Overall, another well-pitched game."
Tommy Medica hit a solo homer, Chris Denorfia had two RBI and Alexi Amarista scored twice in the Padres' third win in their last four.
The two teams wrap up a four-game set on Thursday.
Justin Morneau went 3-for-3 with a homer and knocked in both Colorado runs, while starter Jorge De La Rosa (0-3) went six innings and surrendered three runs -- two earned -- with four strikeouts and a walk.
"I thought it was as solid outing," said Rockies manager Walt Weiss. "He did a nice job to give us a chance to win that game. You don't get a lot of opportunities against (Cashner)."
After Troy Tulowitzki was called out on strikes to lead off the top of the second, Morneau hammered Cashner's first pitch to right-center field to give the Rockies a 1-0 lead.
Medica wasted no time tying the game with a leadoff homer to left in the home half of the second.
De La Rosa and Charlie Blackmon each singled following a Jordan Pacheco strikeout to get things going for the visitors in the top of the fifth. Michael Cuddyer then lined out to first and Carlos Gonzalez was called out on strikes to end the threat.
San Diego added on in the bottom of the fifth when Amarista singled on a soft grounder to second. He then advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Cashner before Everth Cabrera put runners at the corners with his infield single.
Amarista scored on a passed ball by Pacheco and Denorfia laced the next pitch down the right-field line for a double that plated Cabrera.
Colorado loaded the bases with one out in the top of the sixth and Cashner got Pacheco to bounce one to third for a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.
San Diego tacked on an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI single from Denorfia that brought in Amarista for a 4-1 lead.
Gonzalez led off the eighth with a single, then moved to second on a wild pickoff attempt from Cashner. Gonzalez moved over to third on a Tulowitzki groundout that ended Cashner's night.
Joaquin Benoit came on in relief to face Morneau, who hit a sacrifice fly to center that plated Gonzalez.
Benoit then struck out Nolan Arenado to end the inning and handed things over to closer Huston Street, who struck out the first two batters he faced en route to his fifth save of the season.
