Lyles leads Rockies over Phillies
Apr 20, 2014 - 5:35 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - Jordan Lyles worked seven-plus innings to lead the Colorado Rockies to a 3-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday in the second game of a three-game set.Lyles (3-0) gave up one unearned run on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts, while Justin Morneau hit a two-run homer for the Rockies, who have won four of their last five.
"He's really given us a lift in that rotation," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said of Lyles.
Kyle Kendrick (0-2) gave up three runs on six hits with three strikeouts over seven innings for the Phillies, who have dropped four of their last five. Jimmy Rollins drove in their only run.
Nolan Arenado led off the third with a single and DJ LeMahieu followed with a base hit to left-center. Hustling around the bags, Arenado went for home and was tagged out at the plate by Carlos Ruiz. Colorado, though, challenged the call and it was ruled that Ruiz blocked the plate, giving Colorado the run and a 1-0 lead.
In the fourth, the Rockies added to their advantage as Carlos Gonzalez led off with a single and Morneau hit a homer to right two batters later for a 3-0 lead.
"Made a mistake to Morneau," Kendrick said. "That first run. It was a replay. I guess that's why we have it, but it's frustrating when it doesn't go (your way).
The Phillies had loaded the bases with one out in the fourth, their first threat of the game, but Domonic Brown hit into a double play to end the frame.
Philadelphia was able to push one across in the eighth on Rollins' groundout that allowed Cody Asche to score.
LaTroy Hawkins worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth save of the season.
