Arenado extends hitting streak as Rockies pound Rangers
May 7, 2014 - 6:18 AM Denver, CO (SportsNetwork.com) - The Colorado Rockies collected a season-high 21 hits and defeated the Texas Rangers, 12-1, on Tuesday at Coors Field.Carlos Gonzalez went 5-for-5 with three RBI and two runs scored, Troy Tulowitzki went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored and Nolan Arenado extended his hitting streak to 26 games in the win.
Arenado is now one game shy of the club record for consecutive games with a hit, which was set by Michael Cuddyer last season.
Arenado had a pair of RBI, Charlie Blackmon homered and knocked in two, and Drew Stubbs recorded three hits with a home run and three runs scored in Colorado's fifth win in its last six.
"Obviously the hit streak is there," said Arenado. "You know we're up 12-1 so now I'm really starting to think about the hit streak. It started to creep in (my) head. It was just cool that I was able to get it on."
Juan Nicasio (4-1) earned the win after pitching five innings, allowing one run on two hits and five walks.
Robbie Ross Jr. (1-3) was charged with the loss after surrendering six runs on 12 hits over 5 1/3 innings for Texas, which has lost seven of nine.
Adrian Beltre homered to account for the Rangers' only run.
"Hits are hits. They were swinging the bats," Rangers manager Ron Washington said. "Hopefully we can get back to Texas and maybe some of those balls that fell in because of our depth out there we can turn into outs and stay in the ballgame."
The two teams will now travel to play two in Arlington Wednesday and Thursday.
With two outs in the top of the first, Beltre drove a deep fly ball over the right-center field wall to give the Rangers a 1-0 edge.
Colorado took the lead, however, in the bottom half, with Blackmon hitting his seventh homer of the season and Arenado lifting a sacrifice fly into right that scored Tulowitzki.
Gonzalez knocked in Stubbs with a single to left in the third that pushed the lead to 3-1.
Stubbs and Tulowitzki both reached with base hits to open the fifth inning and Gonzalez brought Stubbs home with another single to left that made it a 4-1 game.
Colorado opened it up in the sixth with a six-run inning. Blackmon doubled with one out that scored Brandon Barnes, and Tulowitzki followed with an RBI double of his own. Gonzalez knocked in Tulowitzki with a single and Arenado walked before three straight singles plated runs.
Justin Morneau, Charlie Culberson and Jordan Pacheco all drove in runs via base hits, and the Rockies entered the seventh with a comfy 10-1 advantage.
Stubbs homered to open the seventh and Gonzalez reached for the fifth time on the night with a ground-rule double two batters later. Arenado, who was the only Colorado player without a hit up until the seventh, pulled one down the left-field line that hit the foul line and rolled into the corner, extending the streak with an RBI double.
With the game out of reach, Texas first baseman Mitch Moreland, who was a pitcher at Mississippi State, pitched a scoreless ninth inning and was the only Rangers reliever to hurl a perfect frame.
Game Notes
Gonzalez had five hits in a game for the third time in his career ... Tulowitzki raised his Major League-leading batting average to .421 and is now hitting .608 at home ...
